Newman owes us all that and then some

The level of hope you have when you realize that Newman is genuinely your only chance is like the invention of some new mathematical negative.

Well, we'll see now -- all it takes is one swing. The Brewers offense is really not that imposing, but this is basically a tossup, which given the pitching matchup and mistakes we've made, is probably much better than you'd think.

Maybe Suwinski will catch a hanging breaking ball or something.

Dunno why Fletcher is still in the game after Tellez gets on 1st, but you can't just use the same relievers every time.

This will be a pretty disappointing loss.

Bad bullpen.

The opening AB to Wong is why Keller will never be more than serviceable. 2-2 and Keller just throws 2 complete non-competitive, what-even-is-the-point-of-this fastballs. Free pass to Wong then boom, homer.

He may look good other than that but there's a mental gap there. There just is.

Pretty terrible but quasi-entertaining game. The only conclusion that I think I would really draw from this is that the Brewers are frauds. We are much worse, of course, but I think you can make an argument that the Marlins are better than anybody in our division.

I think the big turning point in this one was Shelton's decision to stick with Fletcher when the game was tied. In some sense I get that you can't just keep using Peters and Crowe starting in the 5th inning every time you have a chance to win, and I also don't hate trying to use him vs. Tellez, but Shelton needed a quicker hook once Tellez got on, and Hembree is not the guy.

Whatever, we lost to a better team. Every matchup in this series heavily favors the Brewers, though Woodruff has struggled early on this year.

With this pitching staff, I’ll be impressed if at the ASB they’ve managed to be in the vicinity of .500. There’s really very little talent there

Cruz crushed a double tonight, but it would be surprising/probably bad if we called him up right now. Blatant ST manipulation is what it is, though, and Cruz is definitely talented enough to "deserve" a shot at any point. If Newman goes to the IL, the only options are Park, him, or Castro.

I thought Keller was fine tonight. The defense has to execute behind him and its a mediocre start. Something he's had more success with this year is keeping hitters off balance and getting bad contact that's in play for outs. When he ranges between that and getting some whiffs, that's a serviceable starter, which I think is more than you can say for a guy like Wilson right now.

The quibble I have is that Shelton isn't deploying the long reliever in the right situation. Long-term, I don't think that strategy is viable anyways, and maybe in some sense we saw the first inkling of that tonight if we were pretty set on Crowe/Peters not pitching tonight. Now we're back to hoping for everything to go right tomorrow -- one thing's for sure, Adames should not even see a pitch in the strike zone tomorrow.

You allow a walk and a home run to start and at best your start is topping off at average.

To his credit, he looked pretty good before again running into a big inning.

Cruz does not deserve the callup. Start Castillo at short.

Honestly if they're willing to try Hayes at SS, I'd be willing to see how that plays out.

Has there ever been talk of playing him at SS? Or is this something that you're pushing as I know I've seen someone on here advocating they do that.

I think it was probably just for an inning in a quasi-blowout. Castillo has some experience playing shortstop and his defense looks above average to me. I'd imagine we might give Marcano a shot given that he had a big hit last night.

Seems like a fair bet that Newman will be out, even if he doesn't have to go on the IL immediately. I'd be a bit surprised if Milwaukee doesn't pull off another sweep, but their offense really is a joke. Maybe Wilson can get lucky. Despite Thompson's blowup, I have the least confidence in Wilson out of the SPs.

Looks like we might be going with an opener. Given how Keller has started his games and then settled into a groove, would have been nice if we had gone this route yesterday...

Castillo doesn't just have experience at SS, SS was his most played position in the minors.

That is why the decision to move Hayes to SS was confusing to me. Instead of just sliding Castillo to SS, they moved Hayes to SS, Castillo to 2nd and Chavis to 3rd. I just don't understand why they would move Hayes to SS there unless they were at least somewhat intrigued with his ability to play SS.

Yeah, you are right about that, and it wasn't too much of a blowout in any case.

I would never say never, but I think when Hayes signed his deal, you have your third basemen for the next decade. It's a fair question as to whether he will give you quite the power output you want from the position, but 3B is a crucial defensive position too and he's played it his whole life. There are plenty of options for shortstop in the medium term, and Hayes also should have the ability to profile as a high OBP / speed guy, which is somewhat unique for a 3B but still makes him a top of the order weapon.

Of all the things we could do, I just don't think I'd mess with it. I am pretty curious to see how the lineup shakes out tonight. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw Marcano in at SS, with perhaps Chavis at 2B. I'm not sure how I feel about Suwinski in general, but given that there are only 3 OFs unless we activate Allen, you might as well play him and see if he can get hot at the plate.

Wish we'd just throw caution to the wind, but Cruz's approach has been so bad that he'd be set up to fail. Maybe there's a prayer if he can put together a strong rest of the week in Iowa (he has 2Ks already today so I wouldn't hold my breath).
