I remember DK absolutely trashing the Stallings trade, saying it was a HUGE mistake. Made Stallings out to be Tony Pena.
Typical Pittsburgh writer. Get overly upset when a 30 something defense first C is dealt during a full scale rebuild. A guy who was, certainly, a great defender, with a decent bat when things were going well, but wasn't even an MLB regular until nearly 30 years of age. I mean, I get the yawning over trade after trade, especially when they're likable players/people, but the bulk of the fan base, writers included, have no earthly idea how to run a baseball team like Pittsburgh.
Cherington isn't a savior but what he's done, largely, to this point, is exactly what I've been preaching for 4+ years now. Tear it completely down, and rebuild the system to match modern analytics and trends. Stallings was never going to be part of that rebuild simply due to his age. Holding onto, and then losing for less than what we got, or nothing at all, is a death knell practice for a team operating with the budget we have.
Look, even some of the better prospects in the system won't pan out. Cruz, has a massive ceiling, but a low floor, absolutely.
Gonzo struggling at AA is a mild concern right now, but the track record, up to including the ultra competitive AFL, is fantastic. He's off to a rough start through 50 odd AB's. Let's not burn the village down just yet. I still think he's got the best chance to be a plus MLB hitter in the system now, though Henry Davis is certainly carrying over those big seasons from Louisville.
Is Priester going to be helping us?
But the overall depth of the system is just so good right now, even prospects ranked outside the top 10, have a chance to be real contributors down the line.
I like the direction we're headed. I really do.
