Cruz is 2-4 with two solidly struck line drives and 0 Ks tonight for Indy. Hopefully that gets him going.
He K'd to end the game. Some of the issue has to be the comically large zone he's facing fairly often. In his final AB, the ump called one below his knees and then one in the opposing batter's box, prompting Cruz to swing at strike three in the same location.

Still, hopefully the good contact is a step in the right direction.

De Jong's stuff POPPED in the bullpen. I think the Pirates are going to totally lean in to this 2-3 inning relief guy thing. That probably means Crowe, Brubaker, De Jong, Omar Cruz etc.

They wouldn't do it nor should they do it, but I legitimately believe Hayes would be a terrific defensive SS in the MLB had he played SS coming up through the minors.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, and please delete/move this if so, but does anyone know if kids can still run the bases on Sunday games? If so, do you have to register somewhere?

Raise it

Raise it

They still advertise it for Sunday kid's days.

If it is the same as when I was a kid, you just take your kid to the Clemente wall and they let the kids and parents in from there.

Until we have electronic pitch framing, bigger hitters are always going to be biased against in terms of balls and strikes. Umps are still anchored on a player's height and not a static zone. It is what it is and Cruz is going to need to learn to overcome it until we have the robo umps.

Stratton will be unavailable tomorrow and I assume Bednar might too. Would be a nice time for Thompson to step up and go 6 vs. a pretty mediocre offense. If not, Thompson for 5, Peters for 2, and Crowe for 2 might be workable.

The bullpen is getting hyped more by the minute, and they do look great, but total lockdown isn't sustainable, and I still worry if heavy usage will be sustainable. At some point we need some starters to throw up 6 IP or I think we'll see some domino effects.

Kranick was up around 98-99mph in his appearance in Indy tonight. I think it makes a lot of sense for him to ultimately join the crew of multi-inning guys. He might have enough as a 5th starter, but I think his stuff plays so much better out of the pen, and he's had tons of injury issues.

I think we're due to see some more of Fletcher. I'm guessing he gets in tomorrow.

Though I'd love for Thompson to go 6-7 on a very nice weather day in Chicago.

Watching a bit of Cards/Reds highlights and I think brakes need to be pumped on Hunter Greene.

I know he lights up the radar guns but the fastball doesn't look especially explosive or even hard to hit. At this point, MLB hitters are so desensitized to velocity that even 100 flat from a righty with a conventional release point is hittable.

I'm sure he'll twirl a couple of gems against us but he doesn't scare me as a pitcher that will torment us for years as Waino or the Brewers trio we just faced do.

I didn't see anything from yesterday other than that he lots 3-4 ticks on the fastball, but I do recall numbers people talking up the stuff on the FB and SL. I have to confess that I'm still skeptical that his kind of heat can be viable out of the rotation. I think the same about Hicks -- it just seems like these guys are a bigger injury risk at least.

Hopefully Castillo gets in there today.

Suzuki is going to be a big problem for the Bucs to get out for a long time.

He takes good ab's and his swing is short yet he generates great bat speed.

Yeah, best case looks like the bullpen might need to cover 5 innings tonight.

Thompson got some bad luck but he pitched poorly and the defense behind him speaks for itself. We'll see if the offense shows any pulse against Hendricks, who is awful, or if they just roll over. At least we won the first two.

Patrick Wisdom upset with strike calls while facing a position player up 17-0.

Time to start throwing at people.

I could only stomach most of the game and not all of it, but the weird thing seemed to be that tons of the hits were just little bloop shots into the OF. There were obviously some HRs, but especially early on, Thompson was getting singled to death.

Whatever, all the losses count the same, and we can salvage the road trip a bit tomorrow with a nice 3-1 series victory. I think the offense is in a bit of a worrying state until we see something out of Reynolds. Wonder if Shelton might sit him tomorrow to get him two days off.
