I'd like to see an aggressive call up for Cal Mitchell w/Tucker being DFA'd. Get Suwinski who's also raking in AA up to Indy to replace Mitchell.

There is no reason Tucker should continue playing at the MLB level. He's replaceable in the OF and his bat is the weakest one on the roster which is saying something.

Mason Martin should be another call up in about a month if he continues to rake in Indy. Got 1B and DH spots available and you know Vogel or Yoshi will almost surely be gone come trade deadline.

I'd probably bring up Castro to replace either Park or VanMeter on the versatility-virtue train.

I'd also like to exorcise the Newman demon but not sure we have a great pure SS on the roster. I guess Cruz lol, but I suppose Park or Castillo could also hack it.

Please release Park while you're at is. I don't think I can stomach another game with him in right field.

Yeah, guys like Park, Tucker, Marisnik, etc are simply warm bodies. I get the reason they're in there for the first 4-6 weeks. But Tucker has shown nothing. Absolutely nothing new at the plate. He's had numerous chances. I get it, he's a former 1st round pick. That's a multi million dollar investment you're trying to save but the kid simply can't hit MLB pitching.

Mitchell provides solid defense, and a bat that can't possibly be any worse than a 3-500 OPS player, short or long term. I'm not saying Mitchell will be an every day starter, let alone star, but he's off to a very hot start in the highest level of minor league play and the corner OF spots are nowhere near locked down moving forward. I'd like to see this happen within the next 2 weeks, sort of a setup to the eventual June call ups of Cruz (providing he doesn't continue sucking) and Contreras.

Suwinski is repeating (and tearing) AA so we need to create room for him in Indy soon enough and let him test out against the final level and see whether or not he's a late summer/Sept call up as well.

Mason Martin should be an easy call up if he continues producing. I would like to see him do it a bit longer than Mitchell given his struggles with K's and hot/colds streaks. He's an easy replacement for Yoshi or Vogel, whomever is moved in dead of summer.

My hope is that non capable players we've seen already are somewhat forced off the roster and players like Mitchell, Martin, Bae, etc are given the 2nd half of the year so we can at least get some idea of what they're capable of at the MLB level.

I do not trust Shelton to trot out a relatively stationary lineup, even with new (better) bodies, but at least we can rid the temptation for throwing out AAAA players like we're getting nightly.

And look, Mitchell/Martin/Bae, etc may all flop as well. But they're next in line in the hopper and producing.

I agree that the Tucker experiment should be drawing to an end, especially now that Alford is back and we presumably want to give him a look -- 3 OFs at last! (Marisnik should have been playing anyways, but whatever, he is depth/defense).

What I really don't get is the approach to Castillo. Here is a prospect who unlocked a new gear in terms of his power to go along with a solid hit tool and above average defense. He rakes in the spring as an extraordinarily hot bat, and then we treat him a step below a platoon player for the entire start of the season.

The sole reason VanMeter should be getting playing time right now is because we are trying to decide if we'll cut bait and DFA in the next week. An underrated terrible aspect of the recent Pirates teams is precisely this kind of extended spring training, merry go round of playing time for middling guys. I guess it goes hand in hand with not trying to win, but let's be honest, the success rate with these players has been 0%. I think it's just as much a Cherington thing as a Shelton thing, since even though Shelton obviously likes to erratically change the lineup every day, it has to be some kind of organizational / team-building philosophy at this point.

It's not as though Castillo is a top prospect by any stretch, but he had an upside as defense/utility, and the power uptick might make him enough to be more of an every day guy. He's 24, these other guys are multi-year MLB players who are 25, 25, 27 and haven't found success. I can't really think of a better guy to give a huge chunk of playing time to and it seems like we are just deciding to say "f*** it".

Yes. I hate to keep piling on the anti-versatility thing but taking a minus hitter (Park and Tucker) at SS/2B and teaching them to play RF poorly accomplishes nothing.

Yesterday against the Cubs; that was the biggest collection of generic righties I've seen in years. If you can't hit those guys and you're not mired in a terrible slump (e.g., Reynolds), you can't hit ML pitching period. Tucker has crossed over to where his "looking frustrated" has stopped endearing him to me and has become "oh you seriously think you're better than this? Yeah f*****g prove it for once."

Mitchell, Martin, Bae, Castro, Suwinski...to your point they may flop but they are due for their 400 ABs to prove it.

Damn, squandered opportunity. 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Unfortunately it ends with a DP.

VanMeter's swing is so pretty though. If you were rating players based on attractive their swing looks this dude would be a top prospect.

The only thing I can say in favor of Tucker is that he's cheaper shortstop defense, but that's not much of a thing to say since we seem intent on not playing him there. I don't think there's any real difference between him and Newman, and Tucker will be cheaper for longer, though of course as I type this Newman makes a phenomenal defensive play.

Tucker can still be optioned, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. I'm not really confident in what we're doing with some of the roster spots. Tucker should go and Castro should come up, but we already aren't playing Castillo.

I know Quintana isn't what he used to be...

But man, the sheer number of non-competitive/throwaway pitches is hard to take. Like the number of low-quality pitches that are nowhere near the strike zone. I don't understand how the same guy was so effective for years for the CWS.

Cruz is 2-4 with two solidly struck line drives and 0 Ks tonight for Indy. Hopefully that gets him going.

Chavis deserves more time as does Castillo. Against lefties there is no reason they shouldn't be in the lineup and at some point (how about now) you start them 2 out of 3 vs righties. Reward good play. Please.

Henry Davis hitting very well thus far (fingers crossed for full health the year over).

Want a crazy stat before the regulars? He's been hit by 7 pitches in 12 games so far. That's why we need to say some nice things about him keeping his health.

15-43
.349/.993
12 K's (22% k rate on 54 PA is just fine)
4 BB's (like to see this climb a little over time)

He's getting run (he's thrown out 1 in 10 runners) on but no passed balls and 1 error otherwise. 7 starts at C and 5 at DH. Will be interesting to see the reports on his defensive game this year.

Let's see if Quintana can navigate through the 8-9-1 to go 5 tonight. I'm not sure we have the starting pitching to really keep the bullpen sustainably rested, even with multiple long guys, but that will be a problem we have to deal with when the rosters shrink.

If I had to guestimate, I'd say Henry Davis plays 800 games for the Pirates in his career and only 150 are at catcher. I just don't see the value in Ryan Noumit+ defense. But I love the bat.

I like that Shelton didn't defer to personal statistics and hooked Quintana there.

Jose was not getting anything past anybody in the 5th. It was the right time to oust him.

I feel bad that Jose doesn't qualify for the W, though.
