Deal.

And can I get some reasons why you would do this?
There are many examples of big centres taking a bit longer. Tage Thompson being one of them. He was a PPG player as a 20 year old center in the AHL, wasn’t awful in the nhl producing at a 30-35 point pace getting bottom 6 minutes.

Would love to see him on the Habs

I wish he had a mean streak to him. He’s so big, strong and mobile - he could absolutely flatten guys if he wanted.

I see his potential as a 2nd line centre. It may be disappointing for a number 2 pick but he was a solid and safe pick. There’s also a possibility he grows into his game and takes that extra step and that’s why he was drafted. Players of his size and mobility are rare. I really don’t think he’s a bust or even close to one.

It’s funny to hear kings fans bash him while defending Turcotte

Other than Tage, what other big man that was drafted high took that long to become a star player?

I'm not saying you're wrong - I just can't think of anyone else. I think of Tage as the exception and not the rule.

Byfield still has the same struggles he had in junior.

He lacks hockey sense and he seems to only provide offense off the rush.

He’s toolsy and I love aspects of his upside, but he may top out as a stud 3rd line C

youtuber @DraftDynasty1 came up with this in his scouting report during the d-1 season and the entire hockey world ran with it. Maybe in Junior it was the case, but far from it in the nhl.

I’ve never watched whoever that is. I do my own scouting video research on my own.

There are not that many 6’5” or 6’6” centres to be honest so it’s a small sample size. Developing at those heights versus 6’2” is very different

Turcotte was a miss IMO, but a lot of the defending i see is pointing out how injuries have really derailed his development. Most kings fan realize his stock is very low, but are hopefully for good health with him, and then hopefully some sort of career. He has looked good when healthy in the AHL though.

I haven’t seen a lot of him but what I have seen I would say he doesn’t have “it”. Seems too passive and more of a passenger. I see a-lot of the similarities with complaints about Shane Wright how he is lazy, just puck watches, not as creative or flashy. He could still breakout he is very young still.

I would not call him passive, if anything sometime he tries to do to much which results in him getting drilled. he is lucky he is so big otherwise some of the hits he receives likely would have him out.

Eventually he will stop putting himself in danger.

The bolded statements:
- Seems to only provide offence off the rush
- Seems too passive and more of a passenger
- Lazy, just puck watches

Are not true IMO, and I don't think anyone watching a decent number of his games recently would feel this way (in the NHL or AHL). He goes really hard along the boards and in the corners, very physical and dogged in his pursuit of the puck, and is doing his best work in set-up/cycling offences.

At the AHL level, he's pretty dominant. Pretty in depth game tape of a good AHL game of his, gives a good sense of how he's playing now for those who don't watch him:

At the NHL level, he's certainly not dominant yet, but he's only 20. You can see him doing a tonne of great things out there, but he's not a finished product. You can tell he's still getting used to the speed of the NHL game, only "imposing his will" sometimes vs. consistently, release on his shot needs to get a touch faster, etc. Pretty normal for a 20 year old in the NHL - very few guys are even NHLers at 20. He's ahead of plenty 6'5"+ forwards he's commonly compared to, when they were 20, like Tage Thompson or Blake Wheeler. He did struggle with mistakes more in the playoffs than the regular season, but again ... reasonably raw 20 year old in the NHL playoffs, that's pretty expected/not concerning.

And even just looking purely at his production, not bad at all for a 20 year old. Especially since he was drafted as very much a "high upside but unpolished" pick, where everyone knew the Kings would have to be patient:
- Regular season: 53 games, 22 points, +13
- Playoffs: 6 games, 4 points, -5

By his mid 20s, I expect him to be somewhere between a "strong 2nd liner" and a "current Tage Thompson" level star.

Wonder if a deal around Byfield for PLD is starting to make sense. I personally think QB will come good on a lot of his potential but it's become pretty clear it's going take him some time and with the Kings pressing to compete right now (for better or worse) they may want a player that's a little further along in their development.

Directly, not likely, but possible.
Would be value of what PLD gets as a rental given liklihood he goes to Habs [who don't want to cough up assets now for likely ufa in 1 yr]
vs Byfield

A 3rd team like NYR may hit a sweet spot w/high enough futures that are affordable enuf + a guy like Lindgren + but make sense for NY + WPG, then PLD + for Byfield +

????

The Kings are not competing at all.
They figured out that the core can't get stuff done.
Fielding a goalie team of Copley/Petersen should tell you that.

Byfield is not for sale

Would have to be a much bigger deal in order to get the cap to work for LA.

If Turcotte can get healthy, I see no reason why he couldn't be a quality bottom six player. He won't live up to his draft slot, but that's okay. A lot of high picks still become important role players. It's not quite the same, but Trevor Lewis has had a very long career and was integral to LA's success in the early 2010's. He was a 17th overall pick. If Turcotte could carve out that career — bottom six, but could slot up higher in a pinch — I'd be happy in the long run.

LA needs Byfield to lock down that 3c imho.

That slots the wingers were they need to be.

I'd go:

Kempe Kopitar Vilardi
Moore Danault Arvidsson
Fiala Byfield Kaliyev
*Iaffalo Lizotte Kupari
Grundstrom

Fagemo/Turcotte/Laferriere

*Trade Iaffalo for cap relief
