Whats missing in his game?

Skating, defensive awerness or finnish?

Or does he lack in vision?

I would say Finish. He was F1 on the top line and his role was to dig pucks out but he is so snakebitten. Also needs to protect pucks better which will come, once he fills out. He should be 3C with Fiala and Vilardi next year.

Every team in the league wants a guy like Byfield. If he can be a ~60 point regular season player who takes it up a notch when the game gets tighter in the playoffs? The way he can control the puck along the outside?

The ask on him would and should be massive. I just don't think you move a guy with his toolbox.

If you’re LA you go down with the ship w Byfield. Just not worth trading him at his lower value now.
Edmonton did that and it worked out perfectly for them lol. Right now he probably still has enough value to bring back a good player that can contribute now but if has another woof season you're basically into Puljujarvi territory where you know you'll get nothing back for him of consequence so you force feed him top 6 minutes hoping things will click and if they don't you ultimately hurt the overall performance of your team.

He will be better next year, his Shooting% was super low suggesting he was super unlucky.
I think he becomes a good 2C with size and speed, maybe a high end 2C.
So if LA signs Matthews as a UFA, Byfield is the perfect guy to play at 2C for when Kopitar retires.

All of the pieces fit positionally but hockey-wise, we would need at least one second-line level playmaking and defensively responsible winger to play with Matthews. Kopitar was an all-situations player who could at times score 40 goals if he didn’t focus on defense.

People said this about Puljujarvi, Kravtsov, Yakupov, and countless other disappointments.

Byfield looks more like them, than he does a star in the NHL IMO.

If I were LA I would try to trade him to Toronto as a package for Matthews.
Yeah, he’s looking like a bust but let’s trade him for a top 5 player in the league.

Would you rather 1 cent or a lottery tickets that cost you 100$?

You’re getting pennies on the Benjamin on any trade with him. Not pennies on the dollar. And not only is it a lottery ticket, it’s a lottery ticket with some numbers that you know have been called already.

High risk low reward.

People also said this about Jack Hughes. Byfield's only 20 and just had a near ppg playoffs
He had a good offensive playoffs but c’mon let’s not make things up. Scoring at a 66% clip is no where near 100%. He’s closer to being a half a point player per game in the playoffs than he is ppg.

Let’s hear the context then

In a world where they try for Matthews, he's likely confirmed going to UFA and a pure rental. LA being a place people think he could re-sign, could make them cough up enough of a package (including Byfield) for such a top talent. I'd imagine conditional picks based on re-signing would be in place.

Now, obviously Toronto could be sour on Byfield like I am, but they could also value him highly like some others do. There's no real way to know. Either way, if Matthews gets shopped, LA should be inquiring.

He’s not confirmed going to UFA, he actually stated the opposite. He wants to sign here as per his post season presser.

And you can’t trade conditional picks based on re-signing anymore.

If there was a Matthews trade to the Kings and Byfield was involved, he wouldn’t be the best piece.

These kinds of posts always crack me up. The guy's a bum...but make him the centerpiece in a trade for a star!

I didn't realise my personal thoughts on a player had so much weight on his actual value. Thanks for letting me know.
