Anyone else surprised they have not tried Vilardi and Byfield together with one on the wing? They are opposite handed players so whomever has the faceoff on their strong side plays center. Changes from shift to shift.

Just going by Kempe situation, the organization seems to want to be absolutely sure before the move a center to wing. Richards and Carter were known commodities when they came and they didn’t want Stoll playing 4c. Plus they didn’t have offensive wingers at the time.

The kid looked good to great most shifts last night. I’m willing to give him a pass on the lack of finishing over a handful of NHL games. He’s scored in the AHL, so it’s just a matter of time and opportunity. And it’s the Kings, so no one scores a lot.

But his skating stride has me wondering if it’s a hindrance. Being bent over that much so often isn’t something you really see in great players. Maybe that’s part of the package which allows QB to be dynamic at maneuvering without the puck. But with the puck, you’d think standing up combined with a wing span would increase puck protection. Look at the way Kaliyev or even Moore square their shoulder with the puck on their stick

Even Coach Todd can see the kid oozes talent. And it’s not a criticism to say his skills are still raw at the NHL level. A lot of people are comparing him to Kopitar or Eric Staal because of size. But I see more of Matthews game in QB. And Matthews was an NHL rookie at QBs age who was handed the 1C. Or if not at high a ceiling as Matthews then a floor of Scheiffle, who took a couple of seasons to breakout.

I remember discussing a number of reasons for this.

1. he plays with a tiny stick
2. one of his early interviews he pointed out he wasn't hitting as much because he got penalized every time he hit someone in 16U, he got used to hunching over so he wouldn't kill people

I hadn’t heard about the hitting thing, thanks for that. And on the stick, I feel like he’s started to use a longer one than what we saw at last years WJCs. Maybe his off season growth led to a longer piece of lumber.

I'm sure ti's something development will work on as they go along...and I agree, it seems longer than before, but it's still disproportionate to his size for sure. That being said, if he's more comfortable handling tat way, hard to talk him out of it.

Gretzky was bent over and played with a short stick too, so he might be ok.

He reminded me a lot of young Kopitar. It's easy to forget Kopi as a youngster because of how much he has evolved and adapted his game, coupled with some wear and kinks in his armor this year; however, Kopi used to be knows as being fast for his size. Though I think Byfield might be a little faster, he reminded me a lot of Kopitar except I think he is even a little bit better defensively than he was already. That play hustling back and breaking up the rush and quickly turning the play back around was as impressive to me as his cross net rush.

I mean that was just a killer play in general. The only other guy on the Kings who can do that is Kempe.

The thing I noticed about QB skating ability - he has this deceptive speed that was shown in that kopi-like move that i saw in his recent stint with the Reign e.g.
