#5 overall, but top D pick…even higher than Owen Power.

That's what it was, thank you.

Not just because of the Kings love but I've always liked his picks and he's called a few guys blowing up before others. And he's been high on them far before the Kings pick them. He had Byfield 1 all year IIRC. So naturally when he's high on someone I'm pretty enthused and look some more.

Didn't even realize he was that high on Turcotte but that also makes me feel better

Filthy Ill. Get this man 15 minutes a game and on PP1.

When he proves he can do something with 10 minutes of ice time, I'm sure he'll get more...he didn't do that last night. Same thing has been happening with Kaliyev night after night after night.

Don't worry though, they are kids...they will figure it out and eventually they will be great players.

Laughfreniere got 10 minutes last night and he is almost at 100 NHL games. If this team wants to kill any hope that our kids make it follow the Rangers development path.

Blasphemy I tell you....he's ready for #1 C duties, 20 minute a night plus 10pp min a night....

Meanwhile, the Rangers are tops in the Atlantic division. They must know something you don't and I would bet their fanbase laughs at your ridiculous claims.

Sign up Panarin and Fox and Kings will be just as good. Prospect development has always been an issue for this Ranger team. Got a few buds who are hard core Rangers fans and think the same.

You want a good team that can develop talent, look at the Canes or Panthers. Rangers always bought their success.

Agreed, Rangers are not the 1st team to think of when it comes to development, FLA, and CAR are good, I would argue DET, even CHI, NYI,

The thing about "development" is, that you can only really develop what's there, you aren't going to turn a kid like Vilardi, into a guy who is going to win a speed race, if a kid has it, he has it, and development will refine his strengths etc,

As fans looking in, you can see the difference between a McDavid and a Grundstrom so to say, but while the difference looks monumental, in reality, it's almost incremental, what's the difference between McDavid and DRaisatl, or MacKinnon etc, it's almost like looking at a chasm or a split, and while it looks monumental, when you pull back and back and back, you realize that chasm is less than a MM etc....

Difference between Byfield and Laferriene is...what exactly?

The Rangers are at the top of the Atlantic for one reason and one reason only: Igor Shesterkin. The team is underwater in every conceivable 5-on-5 statistic that matters.

In a weird way they are the inverse of the Kings: terrible 5-on-5 play with timely special teams contributions, whereas the Kings are great at 5-on-5 (minus finishing, of course) with terrible special teams (lack of) contributions.

amen, kakko is injured but his path has been terrible. I was pissed when they moved up to get him

Not becuase of Laf and Kakko. They got a norris who refused to sign with Clagary and Carolina, and would only sign if he was dealt to the Rangers. They had the top free agent in Panarin sign there, and they have a stud goalie (something the rangers should be proud of developing). The Rangers being in first has more to do with good management of NHL players than management of prospects IMO.

Right, my point wasn’t that NYR are necessarily good at player development, it’s that they are tops in the division and I’m doubting the fan base is bitching about how many minutes Laf or Kakko are getting.

Speaking more generally about Byfield, he definitely need a lot of time to learn the pro game, but man… the dude has a presence out there on the ice that gives me goosebumps. He’s so slick out there and turns heads whenever he’s on the ice. As mentioned on the telecast, I think his (so far) ineffectiveness comes from just being able to blow through smaller competition in Juniors which he can’t get away with now, but he’s a smart player and will learn little chip n chase plays which will work with the flow of the teams play. Once he gets those down, he’ll have the innate skill to sprinkle in to be deceptive and unpredictable to his opponents. I am so so stoked on this guy.

I wish Byfield would use a longer stick with higher blade. It will prevent pucks from fumbling off. He also has a "chop" to his stride that needs to be worked on but these are not major issues.

I do think most kids are being over-coached now to not take risks and "play the right way".
The Grundstrom goal vs the Devils , as soon as the puck was turned over, QB had already made a B-line sprint to center ice. Would be nice if we can keep our talented guys in the O zone for longer. Again it's deployment and lines, put Moore or Iafallo on QB's wing and let him roam free in the O-zone a bit. It's the Kings way to have every center be the 200-foot specialist on the team.

Funny how the Kaliyev-QB-Kempe "shift" was his best shift because he played the way he always did to become the #2 pick

I mean, call me crazy, but I don't think Byfield has been ineffective in the slightest. He's been effective nearly every single shift. Has he scored yet? No. Has he created a ton of chances? Yes. He needs to improve his faceoffs (he's 5/14), but that will come.

He's a threat every time he touches the ice.

There's literally a thread on the front page of the main board talking about the rangers mismanagement of Laf and every prospect thread talks about how they're being screwed up.

Edit: here you go Rangers overtly killing Lafreniere's Career

bonus, re last night haha byfield-vs-lafreniere-happened-tonight-and-nobody-cared

Yeah it's the same thing as the WJC really.

"He's not impressing me" okay, that's great, because in his unimpressive time, he's controlling 4 out of every 5 shot attempts and 5 out of 5 scoring chances. The moment he converts, he's literally already the most dominant player in the league.

Same could be said of Turcotte.. these kids are getting their cup off coffee and they’re learning which what you want but I don’t expect them to score much when you consider the line mates they’ve had.. I’d like to see Turc on Kopi’s line with Kempe ..
Byfield for all the comparisons sure looks a lot like Kopi

Why not put him on PP1 or 2?

They keep putting Brown out there. He has 1 (one) PP point in 40 games. Instead of dismissing that, actually think 3-4 minutes about that. I know you won't and after 1 minute your head would hurt. 100% proof that he can no longer produce or be effective on the PP. This is not a small sample size, it's half a season. Anyone would be better. QB would excell with some space and playing with the best talent, with his vision, passing and shooting abilities.

Brown game logs. 1 PPP. Sick....but not the good kind of sick

Part of looking good is actually getting the puck, then having an option to work with once you get it. Both Turcotte and Byfield have looked pretty good once they actually get the puck and have looked dangerous on their own. They also get into good spaces without the puck. Unfortunately, with their linemates, the odds of anything exciting happening in the offensive zone is dependent on either of them being the puck carrier on a zone entry. At least Doughty seems to look for QB to outlet to because once QB has the puck he can zone enter without the dump in as he backs defenses off.

If Brown or Grundstrom have the puck it's dump in city, which basically turns that shift into an exercise in dump and chase and that only becomes a moderately successful shift if there's actually a chaser available. The top 2 lines comprises of all 6 forwards who can zone enter with the puck on their stick and hold up play on their own. QB literally has the worst linemates if he ever wants to see the puck. Both AK and Lemieux would be upgrades to Brown and Grundstrom but you're not breaking up that line. It's why we want to see talent actually line up with talent.

Edit: Another thing to consider with Turcotte is that he was playing on Kupari's wing, he wasn't playing center. Either way, both QB and Turcotte weren't exactly being placed with linemates to help them take advantage of their skills. It's why if you're sticking them on the worst line, at least give them PP time so they can play with some skill players.

Maybe you didn’t mean this from my comment, but just to clarify if so — I agree with you totally. Ineffective probably wasn’t the right word. He already is driving play and has instantly turned the 3rd line into something (as opposed to the relative nothing it’s been all season). What I mean more is that he’ll often dominantly charge into the zone with the puck but by the hash marks runs into the defenseman causing a turn over. He’s tried to do a few moves to jump out of the defenders way, when he’ll probably learn to (more often than not) do a chip n chase around him to regain control.

But let me restate that Q has already left his mark in a very strong and positive way on the third line, and I’m pumped knowing he’s doing this already while he’s still very raw. Kopi - Danault - Byfield - Lizotte is a really commanding presence down the middle.

In comparison, Turcotte is bringing great energy to his line but is not driving the bus in the same way Q is already. Not for this year, but I’m so curious to see what at Tucotte - Byfield - Vilardi line would do in the years to come (though I’m sure some trades will happen before and one of those two will get shipped out for a LD or a high skill scoring winger).

I think in large part, that's because he's playing with Grundstrom and Brown. I'd love to play him with Kempe and Kupari and let that line just fly.

Iafallo - Kopitar - Kaliyev
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
Kempe - Byfield - Kupari
Lemieux - Lizotte - Brown

Play each of the first three lines even minutes at even strength, spell them with the fourth line, distribute power play and penalty kill time as necessary.
