Love the turnaround from last year in +/- but more than anything, I love the competitive fire in Hughes. That guy wants to be a winner.

His underlying expected defensive results are the best of his career, which is still just in his 3rd year.

Surprisingly his raw defensive results are a tad bit worse than his rookie year with his 2nd season being the worst.

I think if he stays with this progression even better defensive results will come, ideally.

Where are all you stupid f**king haters now? Hughes is a true #1 D! Suck it, haters!
The attack on Hughes "haters" on hfb-Canucks strikes me as bizarre. Can you show us examples of posts about Hughes from hfb-Canucks that you consider hating Hughes?

Tanev is pretty elite himself

A lot of people said that after his first couple of seasons in the league, that Hughes will hadn't hit his ceiling yet. And the last 10-15 games have made a believer out of me.

He's actually playing the best hockey of his brief career. His edgework and agility are simply off the charts. He routinely now beats a couple of forecheckers singlehandedly and leads the charge up the ice. About the only thing you might quibble about is his shot.

But I'm sure that as he matures and gains more strength and leverage on the puck, then that will eventually improve as well. Simply put, an elite player. I suspect that he and Cale Makar will be in same Norris consideration for the next decade.

Stunning season.

Clearly a tier down from Makar/Hedman/Josi/Fox, but he's right there in the next wave and could be in that top group as soon as next season. We just need to get him a steady partner.

-24 to +8.
I think if he had a Devon Toews/Cernak/Tanev paired with him his entire career, he would never have entirely left that conversation, probably stays on the fringe of it. There's a big difference between having Devon Toews or the rotato of #6 dman partners Hughes has been stuck with since Tanev left.

All valid points....Hughes has been paired with a flotsam of right-shot d-men including Tanev, Hamonic and Schenn....and even spent some time with Myers. It's been a revolving door on his right side.

Tanev was probably the perfect partner for him....but that's been beaten to death on these boards-- that somehow Jimbo thought that signing a backup goalie like Holtby and re-signing Virtanen was a better 'strategy' than bringing Tanev back. The end result though was that it also set Hughes back for a season or so.

Benning was just playing the long game, so Hughes would face adversity and come out stronger for it.

Helluva year. Shown good progression I think his ceiling remains sky high, like a Niedermayer type impact in his prime.

What a year. And so great to see him make it a mission to be better in the dZone and succeed.

Also. People please stop using +/- for anything at all.

Already a stud, Quinn is only going to get better and better. I am sure Hughes will smash his current Canuck record of 67 points. When Quinn is done, I am confident it will take another 30+ years to break his new bar set. Eitherway it's going to be a real treat to watch. Still thank the Wings for selecting Filip Zadina over him.

Small sheltered offensive D-man label given by some of the "experts" around here. Can't believe he lasted till the 7th pick.

Given organizational need for RHD and Rathbone/OEL on the left side within the system, would you trade Hughes for Dobson (who many including myself wanted to pick at the time) straight up right now?

No...why would you do that..?..Hughes is a special player. (the first elite PMD in the history of the team)...OEL isnt the dominant player he once was, and Rathbone still isnt an NHL player at this point.

Thats no disrespect to Dobson, who was my pick in that draft year.

no, Dobson is a great player right now, but Hughes has been elite the moment he put on the orca.
Im glad this year it seems OEL can shoulder some of the PP duties, esp when QH is out, but the need for a legitimate 1B option for the team to take the next step is so obvious. We should do anything else to get pry a Dobson away from another franchise the way Sakic did with Toews. anything apart from next year's first, EP, QH and TD. Im the biggest Podkolzin backer, if Podkolzin plus can net us a Dobson type RHD, that should be the priority in order to get the most out of EP/QH's prime.

Hughes has developed tremendously this year and he likely will continue to do so. However, I think the biggest factor moving forward for his play is to actually surround him (a) a top notch partner and (b) a much better blueline overall. That is going to go a long way to helping Hughes really shine moving forward. When they do that my gut feeling is he isn't going to be in that second tier below Makar anymore.

Just listened to Gretzky in Spittin Chicklets podcast and he mentioned Makar, Hedman and Fox as amazing defenders. No mention of QH43.
