What is it that makes people put Makar on his own tier? Yeah sure, he's got a Cup and a Smyth, but that's one season. He hasn't even been the best defensemen in two consecutive seasons yet...

He's amazing, but I'd rank Fox next to him, and in some ways, I rather have Heiskanen.
Makar would have and should have won the Norris last season had he not been injured for 20 games. He should have two already. He has a Smythe. He's broken a record previously held by Bobby Orr. I don't think it's a mystery why people perceive a separation.

That said, Quinn is the obvious favourite for the Norris this year.

Makar is straight up awesome.

And Hughes has been the best D in the league thus far this season. Long season to go though.

It was always always something with Hughes, and he always improved in that specific criticism

-first it was he's a Powerplay Merchant
(he's 1st in even strength scoring amongst defense, and was 5th last year)
-dont forget the plus minus argument
(first in plus minus, and been a positive plus minus the last 3 seasons)
- "He doesnt score goals"
(he's first in goals amongst defense)

I dont even care if he wins the norris

it has to do with these IDIOTS on the east coast who have downplayed his play for so long, like those NHL scouts quoted in the athletic who said he is the same player as when he entered the league and hasn't improved.
That double down by them too was like... career suicide.
Who were the authors of that list again?

U know he’s elite when people start posting junk like this lol
Auston Matthews leads the league in goals but he has 11 in 4 games and 2 in his other 8. Let's pump the brakes on calling him an elite goal scorer or a Rocket candidate until he starts scoring more consistently....hur dur?

Like 7 in 8 games isn't elits as well? If we take out the games where Hughes dominated, he's only on pace for 72 points. what a bum.

What he needs now is an amazing east coast road trip so the votes can actually watch him play with their own eyes for once

By the way

The weight of the Norris trophy has significantly decreased when EK won it by playing 30 mins a night, scored a bunch of pts in a meaningless season

He's very strong and looks very Makar like right now. He is definitely in that group this season.,

No way in hell. He's in that 10-15 range of Ds in the league and can't compete with Dahlin, Makar, and Fox because of his size and only knowing how to play offense. Only PDO can inflate his numbers temporarily.

Makar and Fox are like half and inch taller and 5 pounds heavier than Hughes.

I mean, right now he's playing quite a bit better than Makar has this season (not that Makar isn't still excellent, to be clear, and Makar isn't 100%). Hughes has had a pretty special start to the season...I've watched several Canucks games this season, and he's been pretty transformative in all of them. Pretty easily the best D in the league so far.

Makar took a giant leap forward in his game when the Avs got him an elite partner in Toews. Hughes takes a giant leap in his game with getting an elite partner in Hronek. Yes, Makar and Hughes are great in their own, but their greatness is magnified (the things in their games that make them great, which are different with these two) with having elite partners. Every great D (excepting Orr) needs a partner who compliments them.

Makar is never 100%, that is the norm.

Right now, Hughes is the Norris favorite, no one is playing close to his level, He's last year's Karlsson while playing Fox level D. He just needs to stay healthy. The coaching staff gets full credit, both him and Hronek, EVEN MYERS recently! have been transformed.

maybe they were referring to him in the NHL games...

...but they've been playing NHL21 for 3 years

If Hughes is healthy all season he's going to get 100 points and maybe more. This is mainly because the team will be feasting on some very bad teams in the West this season who can't keep the puck out of the net. If Karlsson can win the Norris and be -26 then yes Hughes will win it with his 100 points and +80 or so at this rate.

It's actually downright scary how effortlessly dominant he is. You're looking at the McDavid of defencemen in this league, folks. No exaggeration. Hell, take away the points and he's still phenomenal simply playing D.

Too early for trophy talk for me but I do know this organization has never come particularly close to having a Norris winner (Jovanovski a couple 4th place votes I think) and that won't be the case for very long.

Oh please, only mid fans that don’t read looks to that Orr-record with rose coloured glasses - Orr entered the league at 18, Makar at 20. That’s a huge difference.

Really? “If he was healthy, he should’ve won”? That’s an argument? Well, it su**s.

Also, is Quinn Hughes better at other aspects than offense than Hedman, Fox and others? Sure, if he outscores them by 20-30 points, while leading his team in points by 30, then we can talk

Let’s see if Quinn can lead his team by 30-40 points, while being pretty much the only player on a team that has a positive impact on the ice before you compare his start of the season to Karlssons eh

Yes. Right now he’s the clear favourite. He’s taken another big step this year especially in goal scoring and finally has been given a high level partner to play with.
Kudos to Tocchet for pairing him with Hronek as many of us thought those two D should be spread out over the top two pairings to provide more balance.

Hughes has been awesome but it’s been 12 games. He has had 12 points recently against SJ (5) Edmonton (4) and Nashville (3) feasting on teams giving up goals. He’s gone pointless aganst the stronger Dallas, NYR, TB and Philly games so far. Point being, it’s been 12 games.

He has been the best defenseman in the last 12 games. For me, it’s never been his ability to rack up points. Although he’s never topped 8 goals in a season he often controls the ice but his defensive game is where he needed some growth. That’s the difference im seeing in him so far this year. Love watching him play.
