It's actually downright scary how effortlessly dominant he is. You're looking at the McDavid of defencemen in this league, folks. No exaggeration. Hell, take away the points and he's still phenomenal simply playing D.

Too early for trophy talk for me but I do know this organization has never come particularly close to having a Norris winner (Jovanovski a couple 4th place votes I think) and that won't be the case for very long.
I disagree.. he puts in effort in his dominance.

Considering he also just made Hronek #3 in D-scoring, he has a big chance baring an injury.
I actually think it's mutual benefit for both. Hronek has skills even without Hughes. Did you see that pass to petersson for that 2-0 goal on Dallas? That was all him

ESPN was right, Quinn Hughes is definitely a top 60 player in this league.
Nah bro his numbers right now is that of a tier 3B dman bro. Tier 3B dman just like Orr. That's what the smooth brain analysts were saying before the season

13 points in 4 games vs EDM x 3 and SJ x 1
7 points in the other 8 games

He's good, but let's see bigger sample size vs non-joke NHL teams than just 8 games.
I guess the other dmen playing EDM and SJ are also putting up the same numbers?
Or just Hughes? Oh, just Hughes?

Also potentially notable.. or maybe not..
When Hughes is scoreless - Canucks lose. (0-2-1)
When he has a point Canucks win. (9-0)
Maybe he's a Hart trophy type player right now? Lots to play out, let's see where this goes...

Incredible start to a year, hope he keeps this up and smashes all those records. My favorite player to watch outside the Devils, and especially now that Jack is injured just can't miss a Canucks game.

The Norris is a crowded race. It's tough for anyone that's not Makar to win.

But Hughes is in the next non-Makar tier with Fox, Heiskanen, and McAvoy. Any one of them is liable to win it if they have a huge season.
What is it that makes people put Makar on his own tier? Yeah sure, he's got a Cup and a Smyth, but that's one season. He hasn't even been the best defensemen in two consecutive seasons yet...

He's amazing, but I'd rank Fox next to him, and in some ways, I rather have Heiskanen.

Hart?

(Adding a hot take to a thread obviously filled with hot takes)
Why?

I mean, hes doing great, but so is Hronek, Pettersson, JT Miller, Demko etc.

Yikes.

What do they have against the Hughes brothers?

No way in hell. He's in that 10-15 range of Ds in the league and can't compete with Dahlin, Makar, and Fox because of his size and only knowing how to play offense. Only PDO can inflate his numbers temporarily.
I'm not sure what Dahlin has done to be grouped in with Fox and Makar, besides his 8th place Norris finish.

It was always always something with Hughes, and he always improved in that specific criticism

-first it was he's a Powerplay Merchant
(he's 1st in even strength scoring amongst defense, and was 5th last year)
-dont forget the plus minus argument
(first in plus minus, and been a positive plus minus the last 3 seasons)
- "He doesnt score goals"
(he's first in goals amongst defense)

I dont even care if he wins the norris

it has to do with these IDIOTS on the east coast who have downplayed his play for so long, like those NHL scouts quoted in the athletic who said he is the same player as when he entered the league and hasn't improved.

An interesting stat is that he leads d-men in shots with 45. Not something I would have expected.
I remember two off seasons ago he mentioned that he doesn’t shoot nearly enough and mentioned how Roman Josi had way more shots than him and he needs to study some of those other defenceman to see when and how they’re shooting the puck. He does a great job of analyzing his game and fixing the holes because right now his shot is an asset not a liability.

Yikes.

It's actually worse than that, they had Q. Hughes higher but spoke to actual NHL scouts and they had some banger takes like "he hasn't improved since he came into the league" and "I don't watch him but I know he's not elite."

Hasn't improved? Absurd.

Why?

I mean, hes doing great, but so is Hronek, Pettersson, JT Miller, Demko etc.

it's because Makar is the best Canadian defenseman. so in the minds of a large part of hf he is the best.

because obviously the best forward and defenceman always have to be Canadian.
