This is the best thing I have seen in a long time
Looks like the shoe is on the other foot, Avs fans are being incredibly classy and we are obsessing over Makar. Until Quinn gets a Norris and a Conn Smythe we're playing from behind. Let's just enjoy this and let the play on the ice do the talking.
I agree. I’m in the same boat that I would put Hughes in the same class as makar. What’s really impressed me is Hughes was just given the captaincy in a Canadian market and is thriving. Tells you he can play really well under pressure. Makar doesn’t have the same pressure to deal with (captaincy and Canadian market)Not for any lack of effort.
In my opinion, it's because they're beginning to realize Quinn has likely moved onto the same tier as Makar and that fact's becoming more and more difficult to deny. Normally whenever anything's written about how good Hughes is there are Avs fans waiting in the wings and ready to pounce at any mention of Quinn Hughes. Although unconfirmed, I've heard a rumor that Avs fans have been sharing a script with each other and that up until last night's 5-point performance by Quinn Hughes, it was a very hot commodity. One click in the search box at the top right and all mention of Quinn Hughes going back to his draft year is listed before their eyes. For many of them, it's a little like sex, except far, far better. So I've heard.
“And then there's Cale Makar,” Avalanche fans are often heard to say after engaging their script and locating a mention of Quinn Hughes. And in their imaginations, beams of golden sunlight shine down upon them, and a choir of heavenly angels sings. They then strut their way back to HF-Avs, throwing gang signs as they go and grabbing their own crotches in self-defiance — but not before turning around, beaming a brilliantly bright smile at their believers, and checking to make sure everyone caught their mic drop moment.
Do I think Hughes has moved onto the same tier as Makar? Yes, for now at least, he has. Can he sustain his current level of play? That is the Great Unanswered Question. I'm convinced he can, but my conviction ain't worth a hill of shit. It's a useless opinion about sports. It is a valid area of debate, though, and Avs fans will definitely have a point should they bring it up. Makar at this point has achieved more than Quinn Hughes. There is no denying that. Only time will tell just how good Hughes may become though. But to throw a little chum in the water, I think it's possible Quinn could even surpass Makar.
Wait... did you hear that? I believe it was a head exploding. Listen. There goes another.
That was well written but it kind of strengthened my point. WE are now the ones obsessing. I haven't seen it from them. Yes they are being forced to realize that Quinn is as good, so what? That's a good thing. Not for any lack of effort.

Not to mention it was mostly 3 or 4 avs fans, speficically Spinorama and avsfan and they have been nowhere to be found. Are we being any better right now?
He has a competent partner for the first time since Tanev in his rookie season.
I'm not worried about who's being better, to be honest. We're all just hockey fans, and we're going to get behind our own players first. I would think there's something wrong with Avs fans if they didn't get behind Makar and tell us to cool our jets when it comes to Hughes. At this point Makar has achieved more.
And it's not like their praise is unwarranted. The guy is amazing. Outside of the Canucks, Makar and Jack Hughes are my two favourite players. They're great players but maybe even better people. There is nothing I can see in either one of them that isn't positive.
I was just going off on a light-hearted tangent, that's all. I don't think we're better or that Avs fans spell God, Makar. I have to admit though, I do find Quinn's constantly improving performance somewhat satisfying as to how it relates to Avs fans. After all, I'm only human.
Great insight. I believe that too. You put it much better than I could have though. The Crosby-Ovie parallel definitely works.I can say with certainty Quinn and Makar, as players, is spurring each other to greatness. Like Crosby and Ovechkin. Quinn came out to say he is pissed off by how the eastern media still hang onto their outdated opinion of his game and place him well below his "rivals". That is that crucial chip on the shoulder that he needs.
Makar is his rival, been that way since the Calder race, will be for the foreseeable future along with Fox and to a lesser degree, Dahlin and Heiskanen. Athletes crave for these ingrained schemas to push themselves, the fanbase's arguments also play into that. I don't know if Quinn can shut it off because of the insane fishbowl market that he plays in and captains in, maybe Makar can.
This year thus far absolutely. He’s better than Makar?
I never heard that. I hope he is reminded of his idiocy at least once per day, every day, for the rest of his life.Let's not get caught up in fanbase vs fanbase. It should really be fanbase vs media for the piece the Athletic put out pre-season where their "expert" said he hasn't seen Quinn's play improve at all in 3 years.
Might be the most egregious take of the last year.
You're referring to Dom? Oh he is aware.... Kind of Cavalier about it too. He deserves to have his face rubbed in it.I never heard that. I hope he is reminded of his idiocy at least once per day, every day, for the rest of his life.
Curious how many players have put up 5 vs the sharks so far? Or 4 for that matter?Amazing night for Quinn but let's not forget this is the winless sharks. I bet Brett Kulak could put up a 5 pt night against SJ too.
Objectively speaking, there's no denying it that Makar is the best offensive player at defense consistently in the league. It was always above everybody else (you could argue Karlsson at times, but he never played winning hockey). With that said, Makar's defense has never been otherworldly (never bad, but never elite in my opinion). He's had great partners to back him up.
Now with that said, Hughes was never on Makar's level for offense. I figured after year 2 he'd get there but he never did.
Until this year. This year he finally took that step forward offensively he should have taken but rather he focused his energy to learn the defensive side of the game after his 2nd year when called out (and rightfully so) on being bad defensively. When challenged, he stepped up to the plate and over several years significantly improved his defensive game. Last year Hughes was elite defensively, despite having absolutely nobody to play with. He was the only defender on the Canucks with positive defensive metrics and when EVERY OTHER CANUCKS DEFENDER played with him, they went from being negative defensive players to positive defensive players due to Hughes.
This year, he has that elite defensive capability from the past season and he has Makar level offense. He's without a doubt the best defender in the league thus far (Fox in my opinion is the only one close).
It's absolutely incredible to finally see him unlucky his potential because it was always there, he just never played with that risk after year 1. Now that he's comfortable with the defensive side of the game and having finally a competent partner, we are seeing him take those offensive risks he couldn't afford to in the past.
He's having a ridiculous season and in my opinion the most impressive one I've seen in this short sample size since Lidstrom.
I agree however he's shooting a lot more this year and has clearly worked on his shot in the off season. It's clearly stronger and he's made a point to use it. This steps his game up another level because he was less dimensional and less threatening last year with one less effective tool in the box.I get the "small sample size" thought, he has definitely stepped it up another gear, but what alot of people havent realized is he has been playing in this elite level since probably Tochett got to Van maybe even a bit before that so 50+ games of so.
He made Noah Juulsen look competent last year and this year i think he has gone from elite to all world because he finally got a great D partner.
It’s JackSibling rivalry, I'm sure he wants to remind folks who's the best of the Hughes Brothers lol
That's certainly debatable.It’s Jack
Those secondary assists are well earned. He starts out behind the net and evades the forecheck, like 100% of the time, then makes an excellent up ice pass.3 of the 5 points were secondary assists so they don't really count?
