Not really to concerned about the Norris, or how well Hughes does relative to the other 6 or 8 top D. He looks like he is ready to put up a monster year this year, which goes a very long way for a team like the Canucks. Guys like Hughes, Boeser, Demko, Ep are right in their primes right now, its shit or get off the pot time for this group.

No doubt, but challenge he will and that is the gist of the thread…..to simply dismiss the possibility with trivial and erroneous statements is ridiculous….
Actually the gist of thread in the title is, “will he win this year ”, not could he challenge.

Quinn Hughes will need to have the most points among defensemen to win the Norris. I’d say that’s true for all defensemen except Makar as consensus best D man overall and Heiskanen who has been anointed this year’s first in line to deserve a Norris.

Most year there’s one player the chattering class decides deserving it more than others for whatever reason - I think that’s Heiskanen this year.

Hronek is actually so good. The guy is just entering his prime. Thanks Detroit.
Detroit doing their best to make Canucks D great again. By not drafting Hughes and letting Canucks draft him. By trading Hronek. I wonder if we can scam detroit for another top 4 D

Makar and Hughes are both objectively better than Karlsson when it comes to defence, yet Karlsson won the Norris based on points production. That could very well happen with Hughes also.
Yeah I feel these boards really underrate how skilled Hughes is. I feel he could end up with 100 points this year. Don't want to jinx him but he is better than even last year and he can score goals now too which will be scary.

We are living in the greatest era for defensemen since the mid-90's... Lidstrom, Bourque, Leetch, Pronger, MacInnis, Stevens and Niedermayer, just off the top of my head.
Dahlin, Hedman, Karlsson, Makar, Heiskanen, Hughes, Fox and Josi are fine comparisons.

Could Hughes win a Norris? Well, it's not impossible... but boy does he have is work cut out for him.

Only 1 game in but Hughes-Hronek pairing was spectacular.

Tocchett said that game plan was to have that pairing along with the Diguissepe-Miller-Boeser line as much as possible vs Mcdavid.

They were willing to live and die with the other pairing handling Drai but the Oilers decided to put the 2 superstars together on the same line after the 1st period which made it "easier" to hold down the Oilers as a team.

Hughes also said that was probably as tame or as reserved as you will see his pairing with Hronek play this season because they cant activate or do too much vs Mcdavid. He says he expects them to be very very agressive offensively as a pairing in any other matchups this season.

5 pts, +7 and they got benched in the 3rd because of the lead they had.

This is a pairing to watch for sure and Hughes having a very good partner might elevate him to the Makar Fox convo this year.

People keep bringing up Dahlin. Dahlin is the most overrated player on these boards I swear. He hasn't done much yet he is better than Hughes which is ridiculous. I take Hughes over Dahlin any day not because am biased but because I know Hughes is superior to Dahlin in some vital aspects which is passing and his skating and edge work eluding checkers. Dahlin is not as dynamic as Hughes.
Yeah good luck with that argument against Dahlin....

Hronek is the kind of defenseman who needs someone to cover for him defensively. Not the other way around. If he’s to put up the massive numbers required to be a serious Norris contender, I think his defense will suffer paired with Hronek.
This.

Why are people acting like Hronek is going to "enable" Hughes shine offensively? He's an offensive defenceman himself.

If anything, they will split points and Hughes might score less than last year.

As for the answer to the question, I think Hughes being a finalist for the Norris would be a big win for him and the Canucks. And I do think it's possible.

But there are too many top-tier elite defenceman for him to win the Norris. It's not a crazy idea, but I wouldn't have him as my first or second choice.

It's a fun HF combo.. because Hronek only gets shit on and Hughes never gets the respect he deserves as an up and coming stud D.

Ironially, I hate the Nuck's and am an Oilers fan but that is a great top pairing and puts Hronek exactly where he should be (support to a legit 1) and Hughes were he needs to be (legit stud 1).

I hope it goes really well for both after tonight's game against my oilers. Till then... minus 5 please.
