Quinn Hughes Mega thread: Top in points, Norris consideration, MVP and Canucks fans hearts

It's a fun HF combo.. because Hronek only gets shit on and Hughes never gets the respect he deserves as an up and coming stud D.

Ironially, I hate the Nuck's and am an Oilers fan but that is a great top pairing and puts Hronek exactly where he should be (support to a legit 1) and Hughes were he needs to be (legit stud 1).

I hope it goes really well for both after tonight's game against my oilers. Till then... minus 5 please.
Sorry about that

Well his team still sucks but he's been on the ice for over 90 minutes without a goal against.

Makar has been the best D in the league for probably 3 years now and has only managed to win the norris once.

First of all, trophies are very little league.

Second of all, 2/3 of the people voting are in the eastern time zone and refuse to watch games past 9:30 pm. And this is why these dumb trophies are either about stat compilation or playing in the East.

Why do people keep referring to trophies like they matter when their flaws are obvious and kind of dumb to begin with?

Sure, that might apply to Arizona and the Sharks. The Avs are without a doubt a team most people try to catch as often as possible though.

Some "people" perhaps. But not voters whose average age is 65.3 years old.

Cool that you think playing in the east doesnt have advantages though.

There's probably a list of ~10 or so defensemen with a realistic shot at the Norris this year - and he's one of them.

Of course he can win.

But he's not the favorite, not even top 5 favorite. So we'll see.

Okay? Good for you, I guess? If you're an Ottawa fan?
Sorry let me rephrase that

I agree with you , Buck, Avs are a star studded team with the NHL’s very best. There’s definitely from all teams tune in as much as they can.

If Ottawa lucks out here, I see them potentially also being another version of Avalanche with perhaps less high end pieces but filled all over.

Not agreeing that Hughes is "as good as" Makar isn't hating on Hughes.
Invading every single Hughes thread to mention Makar is. There is a small but not trivial slice of the Avs fanbase that has done this almost compulsively. It’s odd and I never thought I’d end up batch-adding people to my Ignore list from a non-rival team. But that’s what happened.

And the Hughes = Makar debate was far, far more common when they were rookies, when both were really standing out and breaking new ground. Vast majority of folks - including Canucks fans - will acknowledge that Makar has outperformed Hughes’ play (which has also been excellent).

In terms of Hughes getting a Norris win or even a nomination, a few things have to fall right for him. But it’s absolutely in the realm of possibility. It’s ridiculously, ridiculously early, but if his play so far can keep up he’ll be in the discussion.

I still genuinely believe he's a top-5 talent in this league. The guy's small, but that's the only knock against him... and really always has been.

He has generational skating, 10/10 offensive IQ and 9/10 defensive IQ, some of the best passing of anyone in today's game, and can stick handle in a phone booth. He may also be the best player in the league at holding the blueline; the guy bats pucks out of the air to keep the play alive on the PP.

Now he's an NHL captain in a Canadian market, leading by example night after night.

I just do not understand what the rest of the league is waiting to see with this guy.

Combination of his team not being fun to watch the last few years + multiple other other defensemen coming into their own and or putting up dominant seasons at the same time

Still just been a few games, but provided Hronek can stay healthy I wouldn’t be surprised if Quinn does take a serious run at the Norris

He needs to show it in the playoffs because thats when the EASTERN media actually starts paying attention the rest of the league.

I trully hope people get a chance to watch Hughes. Its magic on ice.

Players like Mcdavid, Makar, Q Hughes, J Hughes, Mack etc just play the game completely different , its entertaining to watch.

I also think there is still some archaic, old school, dinosaur thinking that a Dman needs to be a Chris Pronger rock em sock em type.

New age hockey which is filled with forwards with speed and agility has simply forced to evolve what the prototype franchise dman looks like. Its all about puck possession and zone exit and nobody possesses the puck more than Q Hughes in the NHL.

It will take a while to teach these old dogs some new tricks on how to define a game changing Dman.

The Norris is a crowded race. It's tough for anyone that's not Makar to win.

But Hughes is in the next non-Makar tier with Fox, Heiskanen, and McAvoy. Any one of them is liable to win it if they have a huge season.
