I always cheer for Canada, but I do not see them beating Russia. This Roster for Canada is weak, and I am just
happy they made it to the QF, thanks to Germany beating Latvia.
I hate the weak argument.. you have 3 of the top 7 scorers and more NHL players than 6 of the quarterfinalists COMBINED. Also, on a 4 game win streak. Canada was the one to avoid IMO. I feel bad for Russia drawing that straw to be honest.

I’m surprised Canada made the QF after the horrendous start we had, and for our standards the very questionable roster this year.

Either way you know Canada will be motivated vs ROC and won’t go out without a fight.

They have depth and quality, in the NHL and AHL a lot of players, but they lack quality on the bench. The Swedish Federation will evaluate the tournament and take a stand on the failure. They are certainly thinking about the future and the direction they should take in order to be part of the world's top.

I am quite sure that when the Czech team wins a medal, people in the leadership of czech hockey will consider it a huge success, but they will continue to make the same mistakes.

Šest důvodů, proč Švédsko nepostoupilo do čtvrtfinále | Hokej.cz - web českého hokeje

You may have already read it but that is a great article from. The Czechs about.the swedish early exit.

You are right... Czechs should realize we have big problems and to address them. Whether we win gold or leave Thursday... Our situation is still poor and a medal here won't change that.

Eg. We win gold and swedes dont make quarters... Everyone k ows swedes are in a much better hockey position.

I'd kill for swedish hockey problems over Czech ones!

Does anyone know why Russia is called ROC in this tournament?

Russia was caught doping at the Olympics, so their punishment is that they can’t play under the Russian flag or the name Russia and no Russian anthem either in all international tournaments across all sports. Think its set to last 4 years.

From the third group of players I would choose only Lias Andersson, Erik Brännström, Jesper Boqvist, maybe Viktor Söderström.

The article is relatively well writen, but it lacks the information that Garpenlöv remains in the position of head coach. If I can compare the quality of hockey as a whole, Sweden can still deliver a lot of quality, Finland has better coaches.

The problem of the Swedish Federation is the choices of coach. You will find good trainers in SHL, but it is difficult to get them to represent. Roger Rönnberg coached the last U20 gold team Sweden.

I watch Czech and Slovak hockey, not entirely in depth, but I think I have a picture of this problem.
Filip Pesan has good ideas, is educated and understands the problems that are in czech hockey. But he has one huge mistake.. he divides czech hockey, where there should be cooperation, so people bleach other for who can be the state of hockey.

When Swedish hockey had a major crisis, the people in the leadership of federation understood the key idea. One word...cooperation. If not, the rest of country will regularly defeat Sweden. That is why Pesan convened a congress in Breclav in the summer 2018. I do not feel that the congress was successful. You do?

I like Pesan adn think he understands the problem.

However, I liked Lener too and think he understood the problem.

There was a great debate on CT24 with Varada, Pesan, Vrbata and a Czech NHL scout who played in the NHL (sorry, name is slipping my mind but he was a good player) and it was tense as hell. You could tell Varada and Pesan have some issues with one another for instance. They all love hockey and they all had good points but they agreed on nothing.

You are absolutely right, cooperation is needed and it's not happening.

Too many teams is a big problem.

However, Pesan will blame the clubs but that is also convenient becuase he doens't control the clubs.

Lot of finger pointing. lot of self interest.

I do think that they need to make the leagues smaller... I do think they need to get rid of the academies (or do them much better)... I'm not sure how you stop young Czechs from leaving because that hurts us a lot! Czechs leave at 17... then don't get drafted. Destroys our program.

Having said that.. why would a talented young Czech stay? Svozil looked to be a first rounder and was playing 10 minutes a night for Kometa... now he's a 2nd rounder. If he'd gone to the CHL in a non covid world he'd probably still be a first rounder. I'm not sure what all these 17 and 18 year olds learn from sitting on a bench in the Extraliga? But the next league down is too weak in competition. Eg. lots of guys get drafted out of the 2nd division in Sweden (sorry, don't know the name). Heck the Oiler's sent a bunch of their best prospects (lagesson, Lavoie, Bouchard) to the 2nd Swede league.

That was one of Vrbata's big arguments.. he kept saying Czech hockey is for everyone but not for the guys wanting to make a career of it. Needs to be better streamlined at a younger age.

In the end it's an old boys club and that is frustrating. It's what ruined my Oilers for over a decade. I keep joking that I can't wait till Jagr's first coaching job will be the WJHCs. It might not even be a joke.

The Garpenlov hiring actually sounds reminiscent to an old boys club as well but I don't know enough about Swedish hockey to be sure and don't want to piss off any Swedes on here.lol

The problems with Slovak and Czech hockey aren’t really all that similar imo

False.

Amazing to see Switzerland or Germany in TOP 4. Cant wait for that match.

Is this tournament any popular in Switzerland or Germany? Do non-hockey fans care?

based on tv ratings (number of viewers) compared to fringe sport football (soccer)

Ice Hockey World Cup Final 2018 against Sweden: 1.18 M
Football World Cup 1/8 Final against Sweden: 1.27 M
Football World Cup group match against Brazil: 1.6 M

So yes, surprisingly, ice hockey is relatively popular in Switzerland...

Ok - thanks. Wow - I thought that ban only applied to the Olympics. I didn't realize it was for all international tournaments in all sports. But if the World of Doping really wants to make an example of Russia (or doping in general) they would BAN Russia from competing - period. Calling Russia ROC or whatever, while letting them still compete is merely a slap on the wrist.

This type of blanket ban solution would be unfair to tons of innocent Russian athletes. Actually, some of them live, train, and test for doping outside of Russia.

Yes, I completely understand that this type of blanket ban is unfair to the Russian athletes who don't dope and would never dope. However, by enacting such a strict punishment, the World Doping Agency (or whoever enacted the ban) would show they are not effing around. Further, it might make the athletes pressure THEIR own country saying you better effing take this issue seriously because if you want us to compete under YOUR flag and possibly bring glory to the Motherland, again, you better take this seriously. And, where possible, the athletes could threaten to give up Russian citizenship and compete under another flag.

Again - this is about how seriously the various sporting organizations / countries / athletes take the issue of doping. The nuclear option would certainly get peoples' attention. A mere slap on the wrist...not so much.
