I knew there was a pop culture reference there somewhere. I finally invested the few minutes of trouble to track it down. And this could reference pretty much anything on these boards, so Oilers fans and others, please don't call just to inform you're calling. ;)

:handclap:

That was actually funny I had a good laugh.

This team looks to have come together at the right time.

The defense is so mobile , it'll play a huge part in semi and Gold Medal games.

But the most interesting part of the game was finding out...

PETER POPOVIC IS SWEDISH?

I thought he was Czech.

Praying for a Gold Medal GAme vs the Russians!!!

Popović isn't a Czech surname by a longshot.

What is your problem?

I said canada won fair. Drop the matriarchal oppressive technique and drop your attitude.

When did I say that McDavid will not have a good career or is not a good player? I said he was overrated. But people are acting like he is the best player ever, and he is far far from being any of the best players in this tournament, and what you do internationally is just if not more importent than what you do in NHL.

Totally agree. Mcdavid is overrated. Nobody can live up to the hype Oiler fans and the Toronto media have for this guy! Not his fault. Still a great player!

Mcdavid was 3rd for ppg in the nhl in his rookie season and we are calling him overrated because of the world championships??? Hahahahaha I knew I came to this site for a reason just didn't know it was comic relief

It is obvious the only people that really have a vented interest in this tournament is Oilers fans? I don't mean that in a disrespectable way either. It'seems just weird seeing European fans not being concerned over this tourney, unless it's in there respective country, but Oilers fans are always engaged?

The buildings have been filled with fans from all over Europe (e.g., the loud Hungary, Finland, etc... crowds we have watched). Europeans care more about this tournament than NA fans (on average). The ticket sales and TV viewership numbers prove that.

Nonetheless, I can understand why a Flames fans wouldn't understand following this tournament because the culture of Iginla turning down numerous opportunities to play for Canada continues well in Calgary. Flames' players almost never go to the IIHF championships even though they miss the playoffs the majority of the time this past decade. Even when Treliving is co-GM of Canada he cannot convince key players on his own team to make the trip (e.g., Monahan, Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton). In contrast, the Oilers had Smyth setting a positive example of representing his country whenever the opportunity presented itself so, yes, us Oilers fans have always had a few players to watch.

Wasn't there a record number of Swedes in the NHL this year? Aren't their World Junior teams a bonafide threat to win gold ( yeah, yeah, I know ...they almost always come close but no ciger ) pretty much each and every tourney? Don't they hold the record for most consecutive round robin wins?

Samuel Clemens/Swede Hockey ( paraphrased ):
Yup and yup. Have you seen the list? Three whole teams were either injured, "injured", declined or weren't invited.

Then we were left with the D team. Heck, even Canada would kind of struggle with the D team.

Canada has their C/D team this year (C for fowards, D for defense). Last year was a good example of the B team. Canada just has more depth than any other country so the C/D team still has a bunch of NHL name recognition and/or top-tier developing young players.

To be clear, this is not a shot against Sweden as I recognize that as a smaller nation they cannot handle the same number of declines and/or injuries that Canada can.

Lol, what?? What McDavid does in his NHL career is a thousand times more meaningful that what he does in a short tournament like this. Everyone getting down on him for his play in this tournament (and he hasn't been nearly as bad as people are suggesting) clearly didn't watch him play in the NHL this season. He is capable of far more than he has shown so far. Players have slumps sometimes, especially young players who are adjusting to new teammates in a tournament they've never played in before.
