Can't say specifically for Zibanejad as I don't think Per Marts is very high on him, but yeah a ton of players got invitations and turned them down. Probably almost every swede in the NHL and not still in the playoffs.Who on Sweden actually turned down an invitation anyways, or did they just not get one at all?
I know some of the posters on HFSens were a little peeved at Zibanejad for not playing on this team, but there was no indication that he even got an invitation to play in this tournament.
I would be willing to bet Karlsson got one, but the poor guy was exhausted by game 60 of the regular season. He needed the full offseason to recover.
There is a huge list in the Sweden WHC thread. And it is huge. One player had too long toenails and one had to celebrate his cat's birthday. Things of the sort, anything to get away from participating. Can't say specifically for Zibanejad as I don't think Per Marts is very high on him, but yeah a ton of players got invitations and turned them down. Do you guys have a list of players who declined? Not guys who were injured, but were healthy, and just declined? It blows my mind that so many players didn't go for Sweden.
If you got by injury records for Swedish players before the WHC, Swedish players are limping out of a monumental trench battle on crutches, while players from all other nationalities are basically good to go, on average.Do you guys have a list of players who declined? Well, most players declined because of injuries. Or should I say "injuries".
Blows my mind that so many players from the same country ends up hurt the after the final buzzer after the last game. Guess the Swedes needs to reinvent their pre season training...

Either Swedish players have the bone structure of glass and the resiliance towards injuries of ducklings, or, they systematically hype their physical condition. Or, Swedish players play much harder than any others in the NHL and push themselves to the limit more so than anybody else.
Pick your choice. Hence the joke of too long toenails being an injury condition. My claim is they just don't care.
