It's as though people don't get the commissioner is a mouth piece for the owners and not a unilateral policy maker.
I personally understand the NHL position and blame the IOC.

The concessions the IOC needs to make to NHL are so minor it's immensely frustrating. Let the NHL replay Sidney Crosby's goal? OMG NO!! WHAT WILL THE RIGHTS HOLDERS SAY!!

This is nonsense. NHL should ask NBC for that footage. That's how it workd everywhere else. Finnish national broadcasting company shares the rights for this Olympics and the next three with Discovery Networks (Eurosport and TV 5 and 6 in Finland) and they don't have the rights to show the men's hockey tournament. That means if they show clips, the screen says "Eurosport footage".

Not nonsense.

The narrative is what it is. This would have been the best chance the US has had in a long time to win Gold. The Czechs would have been underdogs in this matchup and there’s no shame in that.

On the whole, everyone loses here. These games would have been a whole lot more exciting had teams been formed with hockey’s best athletes in the same fashion that every other winter sport is held.

You should read your history books. The first year NHL players were allowed at the tournament it was clear Canada was going to walk home with gold - Gretzky, Bourque, Lindros, Roy... But who ended up winning?

Czech team which was much stronger than current czech team. Jagr wouldnt be there and one of above mentioned guys would be probably injured as always. Not even speaking about defence. In 98 Prospal was injured, Elias and Kron werent nominated and 36 years old guy from czech league was still lock for 1st center. Uncomparable situation. SO against best USA would be big success especially when Michaleks, Hemsky etc retired.

Of course it's a different sitaution... The point is this guy seems to think the US would be guaranteed to win gold if NHL players had been allowed this year. The point is that any tournament is unpredictable and there are no sure things. Some teams click together better, some have bad luck, injuries, that's what makes it more interesting than just sitting around counting statistics and rolling dice.

Best chance to win gold and guaranteed to win gold aren’t remotely the same thing

Meh, I’m pretty sure the NHL would have found other reasons not to go if they had gotten those concessions.

Those were just for PR purposes.

Eh, fine, either way though it's exaggerated speculation that's also completely irrelevant

Not really. The USA player pool is the best it’s been probably since 2002. Any American fan was enormously excited for that prospect. Doesn’t mean they’ll win of course as id say on paper the 1998 USA team was the best nhl Olympic team of all time.

Thats the I.O.C for ya, they are greedy s.o.b's

For the players nhl and IOC are all at fault to various degrees. The only one who I think is innocent is the IIHF. They clearly made an effort to get this tournament to be best in best

You act like that was the only factor. Completely disregarding that they also wanted them to pay all travel and insurance costs, that the NHL did not have to shoulder previously. Basically the NHL would have to shoulder all costs, all risks, with little to no reward (including not being able to replay footage like you so simplisticly stated)

No I don’t act like that was the only factor. I act like that was one factor that was particularly ridiculous. There’s a host of things the IOC could easily give up to make the NHL go but they won’t because they don’t care what players play in the hockey tournament.

Agreed again, the IIHF really tried their best to go as far as they could to make it happen.

The owners and I.O.C just wouldn't play ball.

Well if its not much about czech team and mostly about tournament aura, I understand. When it comes to czech team, I am just anxious to think about that. Not sure when finnal roster has to be announced but three czech Ds (Rutta,Jerabek, Kempny) would go there as healthy scratches, we would probably have to take Polak again and maybe Sustr as well, not sure how they are but it does not look. In such case I would built ultra underdog team, but for this you need coach who can give something to that guys and make them better players.

Jagr? For real though???
Old man or not I would not bet against him being able to voodoo a goalie with a great move to score a goal in a shootout in a big game.

It's not like he has to be skating with all he's got for a 50 second shift before taking a shot. It's a shootout Xokkeu and the guy is one of the all time greats, I wouldn't bet against him being effective in that situation.

Not a guy you should underestimate in that position, I am surprised you are.

Probably. I think they really didn’t want to travel to a country that has zero hockey interest and also the games were going to be on at brutal times. It’s much easier to do games in Europe. My hunch is they back but not til 2026 in Europe or the US and they probably pass on Asia games in the future as well

Beijing will be interesting. The NHL may not be able to resist the gigantic market.

It probably helps too that this will most likely be the final Olympics held in a relatively small place like this. The fact nobody really wants to bid the games anymore makes me think they’re simply going to rotate summer between London Paris LA Beijing Tokyo Sydney and probably winter between Beijing Calgary Salt Lake City and probably two other Europe locations

It's so expensive that they should almost construct a permanent Olympic site and just take turns hosting from that location.
