Maybe I’m in the minority but I’ve had a tough time feeling any excitement for the tournament. The games I’ve been able to watch have had no energy and are not very entertaining...the whole tournament has felt lackluster imo.
For me, the feeling of the Olympics as a whole doesn't feel the same.

That Olympics sucked! I had more fun and entertainment watching the women's hockey than the men's. I can't wait for the NHL players next year.

Edit: Bettman "we need to grow the game" let's set up preseason games in China and Sweden. But let's not put our players in the world's biggest tournament that the whole world watches! Ironic

It's safe to say that the "coming in wide and slow" approach has ran it's course in shootouts.

You limit yourself so much with the lack of speed and you're totally dependent on the goalie making a mistake and committing too soon.

As a former goalie turned goalie coach, I'd much rather have them come in slow as I can keep my body under control and keep my movements slow and controlled. If they're coming in fast, I need to get back in the net faster and my movements are faster which in turn, are more uncontrolled.

Not once did USA make the CZE goalie get deep in his crease. They let him stay out and cut down the angles. They had nothing to shoot at and since they were coming in slow, no room to deke.

Credit to the goalie....

I said it in the U.S roster thread that this is a czech team playing well and I could see them taking gold, I stand by that.

Victory! Pavel Francouz deserve really big thanks from us, he remind me Hašek vs Canada in the shootout. Shame the OT ever happen though, the PP was bad. If we score 3-1 goal, it will be much more calmer. But our guys fight for it and deserve it regardless. Now at Russia/Norway. Češi do toho!

We could've seen Jack Eichel, Austin Matthews, Patrick Kane, Joe Pavelski, and TJ Oshie in the shootout
The czechs could have had Voracek,Pastrnak,Jagr,Hertl,Krecji,Palat.

Nothing was garunteed to the U.S with NHL players, the narrative needs to die............it is what it is this year.

hertl is injured :(
I am not sure how early the NHL shut down in previous olympics to get ready for the games but depending on the date Eichel would not have been playing for the U.S at this thing either because as we know he is out for weeks also..

The narrative is what it is. This would have been the best chance the US has had in a long time to win Gold. The Czechs would have been underdogs in this matchup and there’s no shame in that.

On the whole, everyone loses here. These games would have been a whole lot more exciting had teams been formed with hockey’s best athletes in the same fashion that every other winter sport is held.

I agree the games would have been better, there is no denying that, you can easily see the drop in level of play this olympics compared to the NHL involved ones but it just seems a lot of Americans are counting chickens before they are hatched when it comes to this.

The U.S would have been faves against the czechs but also would have been still underdogs to Canada, Sweden would be even money and so would have Russia and maybe only a slight favourite against the Finns.

Single game elimination too, we all know the reality of that, gold would have been tough N.H.L guys or not.

Bronze would not even have been assured.

Forget the improved chances of success, it would have just been fun to watch a USA team with all of the talent in the pool right now. This could have been an exceedingly fun tournament. Oh well. Congrats to the Czechs who played a good game.

It's as though people don't get the commissioner is a mouth piece for the owners and not a unilateral policy maker.
I personally understand the NHL position and blame the IOC.

I know eh? that is all bettman is,a guy who pushes through owners policy, he is not to blame whatsoever.

He lives but to serve his masters.

Congrats to Czech fans, hope we'll meet in semi-finals. I believe the US team did its best, and glad they made it to quarter-finals, wish them best of luck!

Eichel was injured while USA was practicing in Korea already, so theoretically Eichel wouldn't be injured right now. For Sochi the NHL shut down on the 8th and Eichel was injured on the 10th.

Anyways...USA did better than I thought they would but as soon as they hit the post late in the 3rd though I turned it off. Disappointing losses is a USA tradition apparently, hitting the post gave me flashbacks of 2014 Sochi when USA Womens were winning 2-0 with 2 minutes left, USA hit the post on an empty netter and then proceeded to lose the gold medal game.
