Because its pre-season and now is the time to try as much as possible.

What I don't understand is why Smith is getting another shot. His stick is where offense goes to die. He makes current Marc Staal look like prime Bobby Orr offensively.

Regarding the bold; My only guess is it's a final opportunity for Smith to show Quinn he can be a viable spare defensemen. I think Nieves and McKegg have been good enough in camp that they're vastly superior options to Smith as the 12th/13th forwards, so Smith is probably competing for that last D spot.

I will be happy if they at least dress the projected opening night top 6 tonight.
Speaking of......call me crazy, but I would love to see Rykov and Lindgren open the season for at least the first 9. Presuming Hayek and Fox make the team as well. Utilize Smith as a 4th line forward, covering for rookie mistakes/bad games.

Of course that would mean not having a player like Kravtsov or another player we expect to be on opening night roster.

Okay, have at me. There IS a method to my madness, you know.
Those 9 games could go A LOOOONG way, in their development and making them WANT TO work that much harder to get back, yeah.....that taste is so sweet.....they will want MUCH MORE, much more quickly.

Lets face it, by now they have probably made the majority of their roster decisions. What little they have left is mitigated by the fact it's an 82 game season, who cares about playing your best players now. It's a long grind and as much as we want to see the basic opening roster, I don't blame a coach for sitting guys when it really doesn't count.

Like that line for Andersson. Will be nice to see him with NHL players as opposed to Haley and O'Regan. Still think he's outpaced anyone else at the 2C spot, but he won't get it.

Put up time for Kravtsov tonight. He's with a big gun at center. Same for Chytil.

Audition for Strome as the 2C, not sure he's good enough, but rather that than rush a kid.

Hajek getting to play with Trouba is nice. Gives the team a look with him and a vet, as opposed to other young D. Tony D needs to be strong tonight. Fox showed he's ready. DeAngelo has to remind everyone of the 2nd half of last season.

I hope Kakko does something tonight, I know it's only preseason but he's been a little underwhelming especially compared to Hughes

Yea Hughes has definitely had his moments but for the sake of petty arguments he has just 1 pt 5v5 and he finally matched up against a roster with some NHL talent last night and I think they got shut out :dunno:

I actually think he played like 7 prep games with team finland before the wc with like 1 or 2 points. Not that great showing eighter, but after some adjustements he exploded once the wc started. I would not be worried at all...

I have no idea, tbh. He did it in the game at Philly, left Therrien to run the bench, maybe to get a different view/perspective of the game. Also, I'm just predicting that he won't be on the bench tonight because of the brouhaha with his departure from NY and he's probably saving his return to NY for games when they matter.
Yeah, this way when he gets clocked in the head for playing Vesey too much and for not playing Buchnevich enough, it will at least be worth it........game accounts for 2 pts. in the standings, and he will be able to say; "I took one for the team".

I understand that Strome shot 25% last year and isn’t likely a 60 point pace player like he finished the season, but man some of the NYR twitter sphere opinions around him are weird to me.

Ppl wishing we bought him out bc it would give us a 300k credit? Throwing hissy fits bc he might start at 2c instead of Namestnikov? What?

Strome may have overperformed to end last season but idk why that’s being conflated to mean he is a useless garbage player. I could 100% see Strome as a 3rd liner on a legit contending team. Having him as a stop gap 2c (propped up by very strong wings in Kreider and Kakko) isn’t ideal but it’s not horrible as long as it’s temporary until one of the kids seize the role.

I understand wanting the Rangers to explore moving him but I could see it as them moving him or Vladdy and keeping the other as a veteran bottom 6er. He may not be a 50-60 point guy but just bc he shot 25% and had inflated stats as a result does not mean he’s a bad player. I don’t even like him that much but some of the arguments being mad against him are just weird to me. Over performing doesn’t mead he’s bad.

The most important thing to remember is that as zany as place can be; twitter, facebook et al are 1000s of times worse when it comes to the crazies talking....

See, buying out Strome in the first window would have been great because you go from a $3.1M cap hit for the next two years to ~$433k/~$533k

Basically saving ~$2.5M each season.
Also factor in the min 700k his replacement would cost. But yeah I get the financial angle, just something I don’t think is worth getting mad at Gorton for not doing.

I guess I just think Strome with team control is worth keeping and possibly moving or at least seeing if he can keep up his performance than just buying him out.

It didn’t really ever seem like something the Rangers would do. Quinn likes him, he’s a youngish veteran and he finished the season well. If he played horribly to end the season it’s something I could see getting your hopes up for them to buy him out and save cap but with how everything played out I think it was kind of an irrational thing to realistically think they’d actually do.

It was a foregone conclusion after what Strome did last year (I'm always the first to point out the unsustainability of the shooting percentage), and coupled with our dearth of established NHL centers, that Strome was going to be back.

Strome is a pretty awful player at everything outside of his hot streak

He’s had a whole career of ineptitude: he’s bad defensively, can’t PK, has bad penalty differentials, can’t play the power play, doesn’t drive offense, and can't really shoot either so what value does he have besides the fact that he’s a body?

Listen I don’t even like Strome that much as a player all I’m saying is that the idea the Rangers were ever going to buy him out was pure fantasy.
