Skjei is trying to do way too much carrying the offensive burden on his line. He's not that type of player and needs to focus on defensive responsibilities first. It's why I want him to play with ADA, so he's forced to sit back and defend while ADA can rove.
Agree, Staal get too much hate from fans. He’s not great but he is fine on the third pair imo.
To be fair, he's been outplayed by Skjei, Smith, and Hajek. He'll win the spot because of seniority, but I'd still prefer to see him elsewhere. I agree that he won't hurt you on the 3rd pair, but I don't think he'll necessarily help.

Offense dies at his stick.
That's the problem when you're partially blind trying to look down and play the puck. That freak injury ruined him.

Which is why I was hesitant to see him locked up long term.
I think the value will be there. He’ll be a useful player.

But there has to be reasonable expectations. And hoping he is a first pairing guy on a great contract is probably on the border of reasonable.

I get Staal with the NMC, but I cant see how Vesey's contract would be an issue for a team that had Redden in the minors...

Staal definitely wouldn't make it. His body of work and apparent decline makes it obvious.

Vesey has had a poor showing in the preseason but he's one of returning players that has a certain amount of latitude. Standard practice as it should be. A strong preseason camp doesn't automatically qualify a rookie and a weak one doesn't mean Vesey should be cut either, contract or not.

I guess he's a fancy stat darling because he doesn't pass the eye test at all.

Everyone thinks of him wrong and that's why they're mad at him. He's a 25-35 point guy on skills who can slot up to a 1st line and be a glue guy for it, enabling an actual 1st liner to slot down and add scoring punch to a lower line. He's really valuable.

Just not here.

He's a guy who's better on better teams. The opposite of an empty stats guy.
