At this point, I’d say that’s still the easiest concern to point to. It’s certainly not his ability.

I maintain he’s nothing more than a placeholder. Quite a few players on this roster are right now.

When he was drafted the thought was he could make a solid third pairing guy, borderline second pairing guy.

Then he exceeded expectations and was over projected as potentially being a first pairing guy.

The reality is probably in the middle, a second pairing defenseman.

A really disproportionate amount of bad things happen because of him, there's some bad luck involved there but its been years of it, it's not just random misfortune.

There are three trends I’ve always worried about in the back of my mind:

1. The optimism that certain placeholders were closer to long-term pieces.

2. The expectation placed on a bunch of kids not yet old enough to drink to be ready sooner rather than later.

3. The number of “if” checkmarks needed to be hit in order for this team to meet more optimistic expectations.
