I have no idea why we have namestnikov on this roster either other than for gorton to save face for the horrible mistake he made in moving JT Miller.

Spooner is a way better player. He actually should be here for a while. Good good player.

completely agree.

Tbh I'm not sure they're that close. They have a Cup calibre goalie in the system but what else do they have that another dozen teams don't?
Toughness :sarcasm:. But being seriously, our prospects are looking really good and we will still add some in the next couple of years and we are always a marquee place for FAs. We should be encouraged about our future.

Jimmy Vesey is just not a good hockey player. That's about as nicely as I could put it.
He's actually seemed to regress as his career has gone on.

I hate to read into it too much when it's preseason but man, he looks pretty bad.

I thought Crawley looked like an AHL player for sure. I appreciate his toughness out there but his positioning and movement weren't very good.
Definitely appreciate the snarl from him, but I agree. His positioning particularly stood out to me. Often times in the neutral zone he was all the way over to the glass just gifting the opposing forward the middle lane to beat him into the zone. Also had a defensive play on the 5th goal that would've made Girardi blush.

While I'd like to agree, that's all if everything falls into place perfectly.

I'm thinking is going to take a few more years before prospects start making any kind of impact on this team..

I don't think everything has to fall into place perfectly for the Rangers to be better next season than they will be this season. And I would be surprised if they don't sell off some more assets for additional picks/prospects this season. This is a rebuild and they have shown they will do it the right way thus far. So there will be plenty of bumps in the road this year...but this year will be the bottom. I'm not saying next season they will be contenders...but they will be moving in the right direction. That's the time to start considering UFAs.

I disagree. I always felt Staal was supposed to be a Jay McKee type player. He exceeded that before the injuries.

You know, I always thought he was projected to develop more O. Didn’t he have a knack for that in junior? I also believe that before the injury he was getting better constantly, in all areas. I just had real high hopes for him pre-injury. I will never discredit how important he was to this team though.

This year should be the bottom of the slide for the Rangers. They were right to pass on the UFAs this summer. This coming season they will develop the kids, and in all likelihood have another high draft pick. Plus, they will likely add to their stockpile of picks by dealing some assets during the season. After another solid draft the cupboard should be fairly well stocked, and some of the more recent heralded draft picks should be ready to make an impact. The team will be on the way up in 2019...so this summer is exactly the time to be looking at a guy like Panarin. You add top dollar UFA's when your team is on the way up...and the Rangers should be after this season.
Totally agreed. I see a lot of people questioning why the Rangers would go after Panarin if they're rebuilding but I think a lot of people have their mind set on that meaning we have to suck for 5+ years. The 2017, 2018 and 2019 drafts are the rebuild drafts, you're 100% right the team should be on the upswing as soon as next season. That's the pathway. They're not going to be contenders next season, but they should be on the way up You don't not sign Panarin because you're not going to be a contender the first year or two of what is sure to be a 7 year contract. If you can sign an elite player like that who will be 27 when the contract begins as the team begins on the upswing, there's no reason not to. This isn't a guy who will be 30 or 31 when we'd be getting him, he'd be 27.

Half way through preseason so here are my hottest of takes.

- Hajek and DeAngelo have been our best D. They're both playing for something though so perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise. If they both continue to do what they've been doing they both deserve to play on opening night. **** Seniority, those sub par veterans can participate in the pre game festivities and then watch the rest of the game from a suite.
- Buchnevich has been the best forward by a ton. Hope this carries over.
- Our PK is going to suck balls. I'd say that I hope this doesn't carry over but that would be a lie. I just hope that it gets better as we find people who can actually do this.
- Chytil is going to be a monster. Whether thats this year or somewhere in the not to distant future is the question.
- Chad Andersson should at the very least start the year with the team. Keep Vesey away from him please.
- Howden is going to need time in the A. I was willing to give him a pass for the first game and while he was better in this one, it wasn't enough. A late season call up should be in the cards for him.
- I still don't understand Ryan Spooner.
- Namesnikov has been what Spooner should be.
- Vesey still sucks
- So does Staal
- We're probably going to be really, really terrible.
- Brendan Smith lost 21 pounds.

“I still don’t understand Ryan Spooner.”

No one does. He is a labyrinth.

I don't know how many of you watched Jagr during his rookie season, but Chytil looked just like him tonight. He skates the same, has the reach, the skills, the vision.

Obligatory "I'm not saying he's Jagr", but remember, Chytil was a very early birthday, and only a week or so too late for this year's draft. Seeing him tonight, stardom is a certainty, superstardom a possibility.

The guy is skilled and fast, has a good shot, knows where to go/be, has good vision, getting PP time obviously helps him.

Namestnikov is just so nondescript. I've yet to figure out what he actually does well.

I would have liked to see more of Gropp and Fogarty rather than Butler. Were they seriously considering Butler or did they give him a game to be fair to him?

He is elite at breakouts
He’s great at skating, stickchecking, stick handling, causing turnovers, he’s a smart player and he’s quite versatile; he can excel at any position anywhere in the lineup. Good character guy too, plays with grit, and is a hard worker. Plus he’s not JT Miller so that’s a plus
