He is elite at breakouts
He’s great at skating, stickchecking, stick handling, causing turnovers, he’s a smart player and he’s quite versatile; he can excel at any position anywhere in the lineup. Good character guy too, plays with grit, and is a hard worker. Plus he’s not JT Miller so that’s a plus
That's amounted to a whole lot of nothing so far.

I'm also judging him off his lackluster production with the Lightning except for when he got to leech off of Stamkos and Kucherov.
Yea I’m not saying he’s a star player but I think he’s a very good middle 6’er. I think it’s in similar vain to Jimmy Vesey where he’s overhated for not being a star considering he was the roster player we got back in the McDonagh/Miller Trade, and Vesey gets overhated because of the hype that surrounded him, when they both are very good mid-bottom 6 guys

This year should be the bottom of the slide for the Rangers. They were right to pass on the UFAs this summer. This coming season they will develop the kids, and in all likelihood have another high draft pick. Plus, they will likely add to their stockpile of picks by dealing some assets during the season. After another solid draft the cupboard should be fairly well stocked, and some of the more recent heralded draft picks should be ready to make an impact. The team will be on the way up in 2019...so this summer is exactly the time to be looking at a guy like Panarin. You add top dollar UFA's when your team is on the way up...and the Rangers should be after this season.

No f***ing way

And for the love of god RangersTown™️, stick to the course.

Just trying to tie everything together.

Let’s say Vesey were to make the cut, is the belief and “word on the street” from the inter webs that if Vesey is in the top 9 one of the other “conensus” can’t miss prospects will be denied a roster spot ?

The guy is skilled and fast, has a good shot, knows where to go/be, has good vision, getting PP time obviously helps him.

158 points in 278 NHL games
136 points in 150 AHL games
259 points in 230 OHL games
Yet Buch, who is more talented, younger, and has a higher ceiling is on your ****list.

Ok...

I would have liked to see more of Gropp and Fogarty rather than Butler. Were they seriously considering Butler or did they give him a game to be fair to him?
That’s actually a damn good question. Butler is garbage. Gropp and especially Fogarty, imo, have actuall legit NHL ceilings.

Butlers a career AHL’r.

Namestnikov is what happens when you add Fast and spooner together and lose a little bit of both of them. I don’t really understand the hate for him, but I don’t understand a lot of passions for and against certain players on HF

Yeah a lot of those head scratchers come down to the poster in question and their respective loneliness, impressionability, and overall tolerance for vitriol when going against the grain in regard to thoughts.

I don't know how many of you watched Jagr during his rookie season, but Chytil looked just like him tonight. He skates the same, has the reach, the skills, the vision.

Obligatory "I'm not saying he's Jagr", but remember, Chytil was a very early birthday, and only a week or so too late for this year's draft. Seeing him tonight, stardom is a certainty, superstardom a possibility.

I love Chytil. And I do see some visual similarities to Jagr. But he's not JJ. I mean go back and watch Jagr. He had a lot of size and thickness and speed -- but his stickhandling and skating and shiftiness made him so elusive he could have been half his size and still been a star.

Chytil makes a big impact on a game. And he uses his body really well. Especially in the corners. And he's not totally filled out yet. He's skilled but he's not Jagr who was on par with Gretzky, McDavid, Leetch. He's much closer to a young Rick Nash but with slightly better vision and less speed. Young Nash looked like he was shot out of a cannon. If anything I think Kravstov's skill level is a few notches above Chytil's.

Kravtsov's skill level is a few notches above a guy you compare to a 40 goal scorer? Will he score 60 goals?

Whose talking about stats? Stats and skill level are two very different things.

I was speaking in terms of size, skill level and style of play -- and in that regard, I think Chytil's game is much closer to Nash than Jagr. As Chytil fills out I see him bulling his way to the net more. It wasn't about point totals.

As for Kravstov is concerned, his body and game are very different than Chytil's and Nash's. He doesn't play a power forward game. More of a pure skill game. He relies on his agility, the speed of his hands and his playmaking ability. Again, none of that means Kravstov will come anywhere near Rick Nash's production in the NHL. Nor may Chytil.

Vesey is a borderline NHL'er at best. Total bum. He should not be anywhere near the top-9.

We only lose value concerning their contracts with Vesey and Nam on a possible 4th line - so they should be traded and moved before the season start instead for future + a top 9 forward in return.

Half way through preseason so here are my hottest of takes.

- Hajek and DeAngelo have been our best D. They're both playing for something though so perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise. If they both continue to do what they've been doing they both deserve to play on opening night. **** Seniority, those sub par veterans can participate in the pre game festivities and then watch the rest of the game from a suite.
- Buchnevich has been the best forward by a ton. Hope this carries over.
- Our PK is going to suck balls. I'd say that I hope this doesn't carry over but that would be a lie. I just hope that it gets better as we find people who can actually do this.
- Chytil is going to be a monster. Whether thats this year or somewhere in the not to distant future is the question.
- Chad Andersson should at the very least start the year with the team. Keep Vesey away from him please.
- Howden is going to need time in the A. I was willing to give him a pass for the first game and while he was better in this one, it wasn't enough. A late season call up should be in the cards for him.
- I still don't understand Ryan Spooner.
- Namesnikov has been what Spooner should be.
- Vesey still sucks
- So does Staal
- We're probably going to be really, really terrible.
- Brendan Smith lost 21 pounds.

Great recap.

Howden

I wouldn’t be too harsh on Howden. He is a good player but he is a player that doesn’t really fit into the NHL of today perfectly, the game out there is just so fast and the puck is moving so fast, and it’s not surprising that he needs a little time to find ways to get involved and contribute deeper into camp. It’s not that Howden isn’t good in those areas, it’s just that the general level out there in those fields are tremendously high.

When you listen to Clarke when he describes Howden he always emphasizes attitude and physical attributes as well as Howden’s strong overall game. There is a reason for that. To make it to the NHL you always have to beat out a number of very good hockey players. In this context you must separate yourself from the competition. And when looking at the spec for a NHL job and compare Howden’s fact sheet with other guys around him he faces stiff competition.

I’ve put this sloppy before, but in the above context Howden’s usp must be that he — in relation to the competition — can provide more size, the tremendous character he has, and more of everything that you are spoon fed as a hockey player growing up in Western Canada. I am not saying that he must become a Wayne Simmonds type or any kind of old fashioned PF. But we have seen how many lines on this team have come together when not being completely without any kind of size and physical ability.

I think it’s when Howden finds ways to provide something on the NHL level that really compliments what his linemates may not have an abundance of that he can really come in and become a difference maker. With that I am referring to him more being able to do what Pouliot did for Brass and Zucc, and I am not like referring to that Howden must become Milan Lucic II.

The PK

I still hope that it can find a higher overall level when more or less two squads become one and more focus is put into it going into the season.

The natural pecking order when building a team is definitely to leave the special teams to after when you have put time into the fundamental break outs and checking schemes. And it’s also very personel driven and it takes experience, we have a young squad and when split into two it’s short on capable hands...

On being terrible

The worst I’ve ever seen this team is the what, first 2-3 weeks of the regular season under AV. Right? It felt like we would lose every game 8-0.

Being terrible isn’t necessarily a bad thing for this organization and it could certainly be in the cards for this year. Quinn is trying to install some very interesting things to this organization though, I hope that he continues to do just that even if the results are really terrible early. Because no matter if your ideas are good or bad — every change to a NHL team takes TIME to implement. It’s not a matter of weeks or months to install a way to play, you have a shorter period where you obviously just inform the players what to do. But then you will improve in areas the more time you put into it. And in this context we are talking about years.

Shatty

I liked Shatty’s jump out there and that is more important for me than him losing some pucks in his first game in what 3/4 of a year.

The key for Shatty is to be able to maintain that jump over the entire season and not lose a step when you start to get the bruises and wears and tears during the toughest periods of the season.

I could only watch the first period tonight (thankfully) so my only comment is that in addition to his other skills, Chytil is a heck of a fore checker. He goes in, gets the puck and tries to do something. He has a chance to be special.

Yeah it will be so exciting to follow him. That ‘pick’ could easily right now be doing just OK in like a European league with a potential impact in NY being several years away and quite marginal. Instead we got this kid that it’s not unreasonable to ask if he can become like a Kopitar type or ‘just’ a very good 2nd line center and so forth. Nothing can be ruled out. Has he even turned 19 yet?

Amazing!!

I`m fine with Vesey on the 4th line, but Nam 4 mil $ contract need to be in top 9 or move him for future if he don`t fit with Quinn`s ideas how to play hockey.

I felt Zucc did some great things, but I waited more from him, but I have always high expectations and it was at least one situation he should shoot it instead and he would probably score as well than rely on a team m8 to have his stick on the ice waiting for that surprising pass.

We could go full tank and move pieces now and send both Chytil & Lias to AHL to save a year just to aim for that #1 draft pick next summer, but it will not be entertaining to watch at all.

Only saw a bit as well. But I noticed that too. Chytil has great anticipation and sense.

I know some guys like @Amazing Kreiderman want to put Andersson and Chytil on the Ahl for contracts purposes, but no way in hell they will be there after this preseason. After KZB and Zucc they are already our best forwards.

Well, I actually said that if they are projected to be on the 4th line, I'd rather see them in the AHL due to their contract slide eligibility. There's no need to burn a year off their ELC to have them on the 4th line.

We still have a few games left, but this is what I want to see:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Namestnikov-Andersson-Chytil
Spooner-Hayes-Zuccarello
Meskanen-Beleskey-Fast
Vesey

Skjei-Pionk
Smith-Shattenkirk
Staal-DeAngelo
Claesson

Start Howden and Hajek in the AHL. Howden needs time, Hajek is close to making the team, but I rather see him play top-pair minutes in the AHL for a few months than being a 6th or 7th D-man in the NHL.

And Quinn really needs to light a fire under Vesey's ass.
