Yeah, a bit derailed.
I’m more optimistic about the C depth than most, might be indigo-coloured glasses though I admit.
Ferguson is trending well. So’s Brooks. So’s McGregor. So is Stotts. So is SDA.
Add in the competition from the ECHL guys, many of whom are nifty at least, and it looks like fine depth to me.

I'm really looking forwards to the Rookie Tourney in a couple weeks myself to see how things Marlie-wise look like they will shake out.

If Gauthier can't make the Leafs now I think Toronto should trade him to a team where he has a chance to make the big club

Once he hits waiver age then things will sort themselves out. Similar to the goalie situation. Until then no need to trade away depth for the sake of a trade.

Better off keeping him as centre depth IMO.

He's had his chances to make the Leafs already so it's not like they haven't given him the opportunity.

Gauthier kinda blew it last year TBH.

That 4th line center spot was his to take right then and there and he looked rather awful.

I wonder how much his injury affected his play. It's possible he just wasn't in prime game shape when he got the call up and was just not ready for the faster-paced NHL.

He had a good Calder Cup run so perhaps he'll surprise in training camp. But he'll have to earn it.

Yeah, he was pretty good in the playoffs.

Potentially.

But Babcock has been pretty firm apparently that Lindholm’s the guy for the 4C spot and Jooris is probably next in line. That was what CJ said on the SDP anyway.

So maybe Gauthier was still having lingering issues last year when he was called up, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t seem like management or Babcock have any strong desire to have him that spot again.

But as you said, if Gauthier stands out in camp, those feelings can change

Has there been a final word on whether Sandin will go back to Sweden next year?

If he gets a decent amount of playing time against men there, I think that could be better for his development than another year or two in the OHL.

He's over with Rogle right now, but he'll be coming over for our rookie tourny and our training camp I imagine.

The decision will be made then. Leafs could still request Rogle reloan him to the Soo Greyhounds, or they can develop him in the AHL similar to Liljegren.

Man I really hope Korshkov finally joins the leafs next year, really want to see what we have in this guy

IIRC the plan is for him to come over after this season. He said when he signed his 1 year deal that he wanted to play a bigger role with Lokomotiv before coming over. He also noted Leaf management weren't glad, but understood and were okay with it.

However, Lokomotiv brought back Brandon Kozun yesterday, so it remains to be seen just how much icetime Korshkov will see.

It's possibly that if he's not playing a big enough role, maybe they loan him to the Marlies.

Tough to say really

Probably. I do not think he should go on the Marlies again. They are clearly never going to use him in an offensive role that will promote any sort of consistent production, and besides that there really is nothing more he can learn from the AHL.

Lokomotiv probably did that because they 'know' Kozun is actually a winger, unlike Desharnais. That was just a corresponding move.

Man those coaches are a joke. Don't even know the basic things about the players they bring in.

True, but you need to consider that Desharnais was on their 3rd or 4th line, while Kozun was a top line player for them last season, so Korshkov will be pushed down due to that.

Don't forget we also signed Matt Bradley, a WHL center, same age, similar numbers as those two who will be battling it out on the Rock for development time. Should be interesting what the mid-season (if we have it) prospect list looks like.

I think this was another demonstration of Dubas' "AA" plan and an (albeit small) demonstration of us looking for an advantage any way we can. Regardless of a person's opinions of Hunter's drafting it's simple fact that the 15-17 drafts left us with a combined 1 centre born between 97 and 99,(Edit, well plus some guy that wears 34) and that one is a 6th rounder that needs to make major strides to earn an ELC (I think he will). IMO the Marlies signings of Elynuik/Estephan/Bradley is a pretty blatant and savvy attempt to backfill that void, three 97 borns that were ppg+ whl players with >52% on the draw, a 3rd, a 5th, and 6th. Obviously they didn't earn contracts for whatever reason, but for nothing but money we get a chance to see if that was a mistake. I would not be surprised if they're competing for a Brooks type role in camp that comes with an ELC by Christmas, and the other two competing for a Marchment type path for next year.

I think at least 2 of Grundstrom, Korshkov and Engvall will be on the Leafs next season... we will need some quality and cheaper options After signing Matthews and Marner.

They are good, risk free moves, essentially adding retroactive draft picks from previous drafts for free:). However, the team will need to clear some ELCs if 2 or more of these guys or our NCAA players do actually earn them.

I think in many people's minds. How many bonafide first line wingers did Crosby ply with during his back to back Cups? Do Guentzel and Rust strike fear into opposition D? That's who he played with.

By definition complementary means: Supplying mutual needs or offsetting mutual lacks.

Hyman brings a dimension that line lacks without him. Sad you can't see that.
Mathews needs no help 'digging'....he needs someone with skill. The sad part is that Hyman doesn't cut top six on any team in the league, but you think he is a top line winger! I've seen enough! I watched Willy and Auston both ignore a wide open Hyman on a regular basis! Why would they take him off that line ,as the rumor suggests and I can only hope is true? So he can compliment Tavares, bet Johnny can't wait !

Once Grundy is ready, really think Hyman should be our 4C. He is pretty much what you want for a checking C, good D, great fore checker, good in FO, pretty fast and got a nasty streak. He is Tom Wilson in the making.

I'm not sure how he is on draws but if he was adequate, this would be an interesting experiment.

I'm expecting close to a point-per-game AHL season from Bracco this year. I think this will be his coming out party.
