Wonder how many players we will have in the WJC this year?

Kemell is obviously a lock, if they let him go. Kulonummi will be there as well for Team Finland. Ditto for Kiiskinen, he will most likely make it as a bottom-six guy.

Nilsson is looking pretty good for Team Sweden, although his role will probably be small.

Molendyk is making a strong case for him, but he's last year's pick so there will obviously be 2022 picks that they might prefer.

Ditto for Wood. Wood's an interesting one, as he can play C and W and he has size so he could have some value in the bottom lines as well.

I suppose I wouldn't "force" Kemell to go. If he wants to, sure, but if he's really locked in on doing Milwaukee things, I would anyway leave it up to him. He may feel like he essentially has nothing left to prove as a junior, even at the WJC. :dunno:

Agreed, it depends. If his season isn't going so great, then I think he would benefit from going there.

If he's had a solid enough season in the AHL up to that point, I don't think there's any use for him to go.

I’m trying to understand why there isn’t more talk about Graham Sward?

He is only 20. Has 20 points in 11 games. Is a +11. Also it doesn’t seem like he is on a stacked team of any kind . Aside from Geekie no one else on the team is even an NHL draft pick..

So what’s the issue here? Is Sward bad defensively? Skating issues?

I think somebody needs to come here and tell US about him! He managed to get a little blurb on the website yesterday, but just from a stats-watching perspective like we're all doing here.

He didn't stand out at all in the rookie prospects tourney, I would have said it might even be doubtful he'd even get a contract, and going back to junior as an overager was a foregone conclusion. But somebody on our staff saw something in him, he had a rough draft year being in the Covid group, so it's no surprise he ended up getting picked a year late. And while one might normally warn against reading too much into the stats of a 5th-year junior, in reality he did basically miss a whole year in there. So anyway... he's definitely doing what he needed to do to get noticed and get offered a contract at least!

WRT Sward

He is 20 and in the WHL. 20 is the upper age limit for the WHL and 15 is the lower age limit. As such, he is in a sense a man playing among boys.

With that said, last year was actually a down year for him offensively so it is good that he has picked it back up. This seems more like the natural progression from his 21-22 season. Though his +/- took a big step last season so maybe he focused on defense last year and is putting together a more complete game this year. Would like to see him in the ahl next season and get a better read on him

TBH if they still had Benson and Savoie playing for them, I might have been "less impressed" by Sward's start. Those guys will probably still come back at some point. But he's doing it thus far without those guys. That is pretty impressive. From the stats-watcher POV anyway. :dunno:

It was definitely worth a try at center. If it isn't meant to be, no problem, I don't think we drafted him with that as any kind of expectation, it just would have been a nice surprise if it had panned out.

Wood seems to be back to normal. He's playing at wing now, which has seemed to settle him down. 8 points in 10 games, so nearly PPG, after relatively slow start.

Scored a beauty last night:

Center was a nice experiment. If nothing else, he gains some appreciation for the position and learns what he as a winger can do to help our his centerman. Wouldve been nice for it to workout as our center depth is not ideal but ill still take a high end winger.

Molendyk has 4G 12A 16P in 11G. He is easily on pace to surpass last years numbers.

Prokop has 1G 3A 4P in 5 Gladiator matches. Matier is 1G 1A 2P in 5.

Haider is off to a hot start 1.39 GAA 0.942 SV% in 5 games

Sward has 28P in 15 Games. I know he is old for the league he is in but still over halfway to his highest single season production.... if he keeps it up he will more than double his previous record. Even with the grain of salt im taking it with, that is pretty good progression

Fink got knocked off his PPG pace 7P in 8 games.... still very happy for the last pick of the draft playing as a freshman

Scotty Nichol gushing about Molendyk on Wednesday night preds radio. He said Molendyk is resposible for 42% of the goals or primary assists for all points scored when he's on the ice and opposing teams have only scored 5 ES goals with him on the ice so far this season. He mentioned most guys hover around a 10% scoring share for guys they track.

Molendyk - 14 games into the season is over halfway to his point total from his 72 game total from last season.

22P in 14 vs 41P in 72 games
If you look at the WJC threads on this site, not a lot of people put Wood or Molendyk into their projected lineups. We are getting pretty close (well a few weeks) away from the WJC camp threads. I sure hope both of those guys are invited. I guess I'm biased, but I can't really see how the "prevailing wisdom" is that neither of them are really strong candidates? I get they are a year younger. But still. :dunno:

Molendyk probably gets looked over because his offensive production up till this season has just been ok

watching Matthew Wood now.

About 6 min through 1st period

this is my first time watching him live

It is quite apparent that he is the primary play driver for his kine and has shown great skating and puck carrying ability with clean zone exits and rushes into the offensive zone resulting in scoting chances.

His stat regression this year could be the result of playing with less talented linemates than compared to last year

His skating doesnt look as bad as previously reported

So you're saying if you actually watch a prospect play and he looks good, then maybe he didn't "regress" and bust at 19 after all? Is that what I'm hearing? Seems a little dodgy, but ok...
