Jesus he ain't playing in the NHL this season. My 8 year old has bigger shoulders...
I think the Sharks are handling Merkley as well as possible. I’m glad they’re keeping a close eye on him and having open dialogue.
My thought as well. They have a helluva carrot to entice him with too... get your shit together and you can come learn from 2 of the greatest offensive defensemen of their generation. One interview or article said the Sharks went and watched 40 of his games last season and talked to him after each one. They're clearly putting the time and effort into making sure he pans out.
I actually thought he seemed like a pretty good kid with a good head on his shoulders.
considering the negatives that have been written about him I thought he came off well in that interview at least.

I have to take issue with the description of the scrimmage from that Sharks press release.

Many of the organization's top prospects are expected to participate, including 2018 first round pick Ryan Merkley, 2017 second round pick Mario Ferraro, Sasha Chmelevski, Ivan Chekhovich, Noah Gregor, Zachary Emond, Andrew Shortridge, and others.

The lack of Blichfeld is disappointing. Dude led his league in scoring. Led the CHL in goals. The hell?

Re: Merkley

It's weird to me that attitude issues are as big of an issue as they are. These are 17/18 year old kids....I was a moron at 18. Do people in professional sports just not mature? ha

With that said, he looks physically 2+ years away ignoring everything else...He's gotta be going back to Juniors for one more year right?

He's there right? Didn't Blichfield score yesterday? Or do you mean that they didn't mention him?

You do know that DeMelo is a UFA after the coming season, right?

I don’t think Merkley looks cocky at all, I think he still looks intense like I thought last year. All the fidgeting, lip movement while not talking, burst out laughs and breathing.

I still think this kids “attitude issues” stem not from him being a dickhead, but from him having never been taught, or developing poor coping mechanisms for his intense nature. So every now and again it comes bursting out in a negative manner, making him look like an ass. I have never met the kid, so I could be soooooo wrong, but every interview the kid seems highly wound up, but totally pleasant and personable, not a kid who is a punk with a bad attitude.

Either way, I’m definitely rooting for him, because so far everything I’ve personally seen or heard from him I like.

He's such a spitting image of Dan Boyle. Just need to handle it right and let him know he's going to be a star if they take the time for development.

I would never tell him he was going to be a star. Huge mistake IMO. Tell him he might play in the NHL if he works his ass off. The best always work their ass off because they feel like they can always get better.

Some junior players who have caused trouble for themselves figure it out and make it (DeAngelo). Some don't, or at least haven't yet (Ho-Sang). (I'm just using those guys as examples that sprung to mind. No interest in reviewing/comparing their histories with Merkley's.)

The Sharks uncharacteristically drafted a high-ceiling player they knew needed a lot of TLC. With the veteran-laden lineup and Norris d-corps they have, it was as good a landing spot for Merkley as could be imagined.

I like Merkley's trend line. Much more confident about his future than when he was drafted.
