If Vinnie REALLY wants to come back he should make a statement that he only wants to play in Columbus and would sign for 1M. This would force Djarmo's hand. But he better do it quick.

Since he's already back in the Czech Republic, I'm expecting to see Vinny in one of the Euro leagues this season. Maybe even in the KHL.

I've seen zero discussion of him anywhere but here so that doesn't speak highly of his NHL market value.

He inquired on the organization multiple times but received no response regarding a new contract for next season. The ball is in JK's court.

JD said they've had several conversations with Vinny...as late as saturday he had said this...

When does it happen that the top scorer is not brought back the next season?
I don't care how old or slow he is. Numbers speak louder than words.
Any examples?

Starting off the top of my head since this seems like fun. As you can see below it happens. I like VP as much as anyone else, but this roster is done in all likelihood barring any trades.

Marian Gaborik lead his team by 20 pts more than the next in 07/08 and then was the only person on the team greater than pt/gm in 08/09 when he left for NYR

Alfie was only 3 pts off the lead for OTT this past season and he left now.

Jokinen was the #2 in 11/12 for the CGY and lead FLA 07/08.

Sundin lead the TML in 07 and then signed with the nucks.

Gomez 06/07 #3 on Devils (#1 in PO) left for NYR.

Langkow 03/04 was #2 for PHX and went to CGY.

Briere in 01/02 from PHX to BUF and again in 06/07 from BUF to PHI

Part of this I think is mitigated by the number of times you see the leading pts guy traded and a rebuild started (Nash, Iginla, Kovie, etc).

If you look at the NBA, it's pretty easy to find examples (Paul, LBJ, Bosh, Nash, yadda yadda yadda). You also see similar events in Baseball (ie Sabbathia or Lee signing eith new teams as UFAs).

This is just a high stakes poker game being played by all 30 GMs. When one blinks the bidding war will begin.

Somewhat valid points. However, how many of these people specifically and repeatedly mentioned that they want to stay?

I think the press is dropping the ball here a little. To whit, I have the following questions:

Did Howson speak for the Organization when he offered Prospal the Gentleman's agreement? What does Scott Howson say about this?

If John Davidson was unaware of this agreement, why wasn't he made aware? Did he not read the newspaper? Did he not talk to Scott Howson? Did Scott Howson not tell him? If no, why not?

Why wasn't Jarmo told when he signed up? All this needed was a 3 minute phone call...

Why would anyone care to mention an information agreement? That's one of the first things mentioned on this board when he got hired, Prospal and the agreement. With change in President and JM it put the deal at risk.

Ultimately they decided to spend the money on Horton. Frankly, Horton isn't likely to out-produce what Vinny would have given us. However he will also be here for years to come. Had Vinny really wanted to stay he can Howson could have done a two or three year deal. Vinny had to realize that Howson could be on very thin ice with the teams performance.

Look I would love the have Vinny back, but the Bob deal pretty much guaranteed that unless we struck out in the FA or trade market(s) we weren't going to have enough cap space if we wanted to give a guys like Jenner and Murray a chance to make the team.

I was hoping he would be with the franchise after he retired. I hope this doesn't jeopardize that. But if JK/JD don't want that relationship anymore, there is really nothing we can (or should) do about it beyond mentioning it in the STH meetings or call in shows.

I'm maybe way out on a limb but I think that Horton will outproduce what Vinny would have given us.

You realize Horton will be out until December right?

For a guy who has fought for the organization like he has (recommending it to Gaborik, speaking out about the loser atmosphere, and plenty of players citing him as a role model within the organization) he deserves to be treated better in my opinion.

A good manager shouldn't let guys like that just walk out the door.

I have copied the part of Portzline's piece that first brought this up.:

It also includes a gentleman's agreement that when Prospal's playing days are over, he'll stay with the organization in some capacity.

What part of that quote implies that the CBJ owes him a roster spot until his playing days are over?

It wasn't Howson's place to make such an offer unless the offer was for a job as an assistant GM, scout, coach or player. It is also well established protocol that the acting GM has his own people in place. It was complete hubris for Howson to believe he would be the GM when Vinnie's career came to an end. If that offer came from McConnell OK.

Yes, I do realize Horton will miss the start of the season. Maybe we should have a poll, how about on the mains? However, given the fact that there has been zero chatter about any offers of employment from any other team, I'm thinking that Horton is winning the 2013/2014 season production poll.

They are roughly the same. .68 .vs. .69. Horton, however, scores more goals. Not even sure if we'll have anything resembling a real playmaker with Horton, so he'll need those dirty goals.

Part of the agreement was that as long as he wanted to play, he would have an evergreen 2.5 million contract. You have a cherry picked portion of the agreement. Who cares at this point anyway? It wasn't a contract. These guys never made the agreement, so they aren't aren't honor bound to honor it.

Only one that might is the owner, but I doubt he was involved to that level.

I never saw the guaranteed $2.5 salary as long he wanted to play part.

There is no chance Howson would agree to giving Propsal a $2.5 million contract for as long as he wants to keep playing. He is not that stupid.

Also, Prospal scored 3 goals in the last 25 games of the season. If you really think at his age , he is going to continue leading the team in scoring with a full training camp and an 82 game schedule you are crazy.

Not so. We've got more than enough caproom to sign Vinny for $1-2M and still have a lot of flexibility for the deadline. If all the kids on EL deals hit the bonuses then we go over (which ends up lowering next years cap for us by the amount we go over this year), but that is very unlikely.

We can go into this year with the roster as is or we can add somebody. But it's not a cap issue unless we want to sign someone costing $3M+.

It was reported back when when he signed his last contract.

It was detailed out later on his evergreen, but here is the reference. He's still healthy and productive right?

As long as he's healthy and productive, Howson said, the two sides will work on one-year extensions.
