Speculation: Prospal's play and the gentleman's agreement

There is no chance Howson would agree to giving Propsal a $2.5 million contract for as long as he wants to keep playing. He is not that stupid.

Also, Prospal scored 3 goals in the last 25 games of the season. If you really think at his age , he is going to continue leading the team in scoring with a full training camp and an 82 game schedule you are crazy.

To be fair, last season was hardly a normal situation with 3 in 5 most weeks, sometimes 4 in 6. It's no wonder he wore down. He still did not miss a game in two seasons and even with that drought, trailed only nash in total points.

Ok.... I'm taking a stand on the Prospal issue after being non-committal for months...

Based on the current signings and remaining Cap space I think it behooves the organization to bring him back for at least one season. Heck, he was the CBJ's highest goal scorer last season, a leader both on and off the ice during our playoff attempt but most important and foremost... he let the Goliath Red Wings know who ruled when he pointed to the scoreboard that night when we were crushing them... (the old man has balls)

Sign him JK and let’s get this party started!!!! Do it!

I'm trying to figure out what part of "healthy and productive" we're not understanding here. With Gaborik on the team, I sure as hope to hell he doesn't lead the team in scoring. Last I checked no one was expecting him to. Yeah, that old man performed at the same level as the year before and the year before and the year before. Pretty much the same for the last decade. I remember the whole "He won't be able to play in a compressed season, he's too old and slow". Well that didn't happen.

Friggin people around here make it sound like no one can perform past 32 around here. Never mind guys like Ray Whitney (and others) continue to perform. It's not the norm, but it's not that f'ing rare.

Time to put this thread to rest for me, it's now entered crazy town.

Prospal did start to slow down at the end of the season. He got a little slower, got beat on some plays, and there were times he took penalties because he wasn't moving his feet. That could also explain why his scoring slowed down. The shortened season may have helped him.

I'm guessing other team might be willing to give him a 1 year deal in the 2-3mil range if they are desperate.

What I would rather see is the Jackets sign him for 2 years for less money and hope that can get it done. But whether he does that might depend on whether there's a long term future for him in the organization after his playing career. Considering how much he helped the team turn around, I can't see that being a negative. I just hope Jarmo and JD aren't wanting to only give their buddies jobs and there isn't room for guys like Prospal who have helped the organization.

There it is. Sign him already imo.... 1.5 mil for 1 year.

Just out of curiosity, I was thinking today and found it odd Prospal hadnt been resigned by the Jackets. Without reading three months worth of info, what is the story? Do you guys think the Jackets just want to move on? Are they still leading Vinnie to believe he'll have a spot? I know this. Edmonton needs a LW and with Howson out here now, I think he could end up in Edmonton.

The guy showed great loyalty to the club. He likes it there and he really spoke highly of the area and what they were building. He's a great professional who still competes every night. IMO of course.

From today's Dispatch this should about sum it up:

Kekalainen, by the way, indicated that his roster is basically set. The only question is whether to bring back veteran Vinny Prospal.

“Are we going to extend him an offer? We’re not sure we want to do that yet,†Kekalainen said. “We want to give him the proper respect if we do — and he may not even want to do it. We always like to keep our options open, but I’d say right now we’ll stand pat unless we make an offer to Vinny.â€

Looks like my dream 3rd line of Prospal, Jagr, and Milan Hejduk isn't going to happen.

Sounds to me like Jarmo is saying 'Yeah, we're still considering our options." just so he cane bide time before Prospal signs elsewhere before saying "Well, we gave it our best shot."

It just means there are still some Prospal jerseys left in stock at the Blueline. Be careful what you say about Djarmo, he's more powerful than the NSA.

Why? The GM decided the very little cap space that is left isn't worth spending on another forward when we already have 13 (14 with Jenner) on the roster.

Better to save it for the trade deadline or for another d-man.

Because Vinny is very high value, his only knock being his speed. He helps this organization a lot- he has already helped it a lot and that would continue. Because I believe this team is a lot better with him on it. (I also feel the organization owes him, but that is not enough to spend what little resources we have left on him.)

If Jarmo's reason for not bringing him back correspond with the rationale you present, he's not saying so. It doesn't seem like the remaining cap room, saving the remaining cap room, factors in here. Based on his words. He has said there's "still room to work with there", to paraphrase, and the actual quote is earlier in the thread.

So he's open to spending that money, but for whatever won't on a guy who brings I think a tremendous amount of value to the roster. And who wants to come back, has said as much.

Apparently the FO doesn't agree with you. That or there just isn't enough cap space.
