Why does this guy take such stupid penalties? he crosschecks guys and thinks he will get away with it? Not only that, but losing a battle to Saku Koivu?

The problem is Pronger's value here on HF is not indicative of how he plays in the present, it is rather indicative of how he played in the past. Pronger is not the player he once was, he is however a very good defencemen. I don't think Pronger is close to the perennial Norris contender he once was. The new NHL has also hurt his game, he hasn't looked great for the Canadians.

I think his injury is having a huge effect on his play. He's been very good for Edmonton so far this season but looked a day late and a dollar short today and last game too. jmo.

I think Pronger has always been a little overated. He defenitely shouldnt be on the pp. He should be used as a shut down guy on this team.

I've been VERY disappointed by Pronger. He's been the worst defenseman on the team, and that includes McCabe (if only because Pronger is getting so much more ice time than McCabe is).

He shouldn't be on the ice with his injury, but he made that decision, so it's not an excuse for his poor play.

Canada has too many cement feet defensemen IMO.

it must be the broken foot, because he has been great for Edmonton this year. He has also been remarkably disciplined in the NHL. I think his foot has slowed him down considerably, and the penalties are a result of him compensating for a lack of foot speed. I really don't think he should be playing in his condition.

Prongers a rock. I agree that he has been stinking up the joint in the last few days but, he is still the player he has always been. Hopefully his play will start coming around in this tournament so everyone can see thye Pronger that I see on a regular basis.

I agree the injury is reallyl hurting him. Pronger has an injured bone in his foot. To make matters worse, Quinn is overplaying Pronger. With Niedermeyer and Jovonovski withdrawing with injuries, Canada didn't need another defenseman withdraw due to injury. There was actually doubt of Pronger going to the Olympics. How would Canada be fairing if Pronger also had to withdraw due to injury?

We'd get Phaneuf or Boyle.

Pronger is playing like he has against Detroit all his career....very badly. I wont say Pronger is overrated, but I always thought those who said he was as good or better than Lidstrom needed a head shake.

Canada would probably be fine since they have 3 teams that would win gold.

Had a feeling Pronger would be coming up pretty quick on the board. The guy plays monster amounts of ice time (and at critical moments be it the power play or shorthanded). Granted, he has not been the impact guy as of yet, and yes, whats up with all the penalties?

There must be a bit of an injury for sure. I also find his passing is not as crisp as usual. The guys still a great player and I have to wait to see if things improve as, unfortunately, the prelim round really means zip other than giving the pundits something to rant about.

He has a broken bone in his foot. There was actually doubt that he'd go to the Olympics. He's probably getting tired by playing so many minutes. Playing around 30 minutes a night when Team Canada played their 4th game in 5 nights vs Finland is bound to make anyone tired. Someone shold tell Quinn he has 2 more defense pairings besides Pronger and Blake.

Does Canada really have 3 teams that could win gold? I'm beginning to wonder about this. Pronger probably would have withdrawn had Niedermeyer been healthy.

Isn't it obvious.

He's not a mobile defenceman no the big ice.

Those Finns were too quick for him.

He couldn't catch up, so he took penalties.

I think he may have been being a tad bit sarcastic. :dunno: If a team with one NHL player who plays 7th D on Montreal's squad beat us, I'm sure that we could make at least 3 teams. Its the way that there playing, not their ability to play! I can't wait for this all to be over, I have a feeling some people will be eating their words.

Being injured is no excuse for taking bonehead cross-checking penalties.
Taking penalties is the result of being very tired and it's apparent that Quinn is playing him too much.

Quinn, you have 2 more defesne pairings. Stop playing Pronger and Blake so much.

he didn't take one hooking or holding penalty

a few cross-checking ones though...Pronger was horrible today and I'm beginning to think the injury is really hurting his play

Yeah ask the Red Wings about how disciplined Pronger is. The guy is simply a bone head in crunch time. He is the defensive version of Keith Tzachuk, another bone head.

Oh ok the worst d man is pretty good, that is actually very funny, Tell me what has Regher done as well as McCabe and Foote and quite honestly did Bouwmester make one pass prior to the midway point in the third. Redden has been no existant out there as well and Blake at times has shown his age

Sorry Smyth2Hemsky, I knew he had a broken foot, but the fact that he downplayed it so much led me to my comment. He said it didn't affect his skating, and thus, his play. I'm sure when he blocks shots with that foot however, it is a different story. If Canada loses this tourney badly, there will be alot of questions and I'm sure Pronger's pre Olympic health will be one of the focal points unfortunately (as there are larger issues teamwise obviously).

And if he's playing rough now, just wait 'till we get to watch the Oilers again...I'm sure there will be a rough period just when the Oil will need him the most (as if they don't rely on him enough).

Why do people have the urge to say that Canadian big players are superior to smaller European ones? Why would Chara have some difficulty dealing with Gaborik (hypothetically speaking, of course)? Saku is quick, smart and shifty. It's that simple.

There's always room for improvement, of course, but there's no need to place so much blame on one player; not from my perspective at least. Canada's not terrible; it's jus that the other teams (save for, maybe, USA) have picked it up.
