with SJ in the playoff picture and clearly having goalies woes, could this be one of the only possible trades the Habs can move Price WITHOUT retaining salary?

Vlasic has his own horrible contract at $7M until 2026, but cheaper than Price for a buyout.

Point is, you dont want to keep a goalie who can win you games when youre trying to tank/rebuild. Makes no sense.

Price has a NMC .He won't be going to SJ and we don't want Vlasic.

you think Price wants to be part of this rebuild and wouldnt want to go out west at this point?

of course we dont WANT Vlasic, but thats what you have to take in order to trade Price WITHOUT salary retained

Rather keep Price and his salary easily over Vlasic and his contract.

If Montreal is headed to rebuild where do you think San Jose is headed?

theyre a playoff team right now last I checked, and this is without their best prospect. Granted, they probably wont be contenders soon, but crazier things have happened.

Eklund, Hertl, Meier isnt a bad core for the next 4-5 years.

Couture 32y, locked up at 8M for 5.5 years
Karlsson 32y, locked up at 11.65M for 5.5 years
Burns 36y, locked up at 8M for 3.5 years

Eithers Vlasic at 7M or Price at 10M longterm that team isn’t going anywhere for awhile.

If Hertl wants to compete in his prime he’ll look elsewhere

Don't see the point, saving $3M on the cap is not an issue for the habs at this point and that is all this trade would do. It does not make them better, in fact it would make them worse and they would still need to sign a new goalie which would likely take up a big chunk of that $3M savings.

Perhaps, but Hertl is leaving SJ in about 30 seconds. Meier after next season.

UFA status for their best young vets is coming up quick.

isnt that the point when you rebuild? try and be worse, ESPECIALLY next year. You dont think Gorton knows that?

And no they wouldnt have to sign a goalie... they have Allen and Primeau. Why would they sign another goalie?

You don't go out trying to be worse...no GM will do that, no player will do that. This does nothing for the Habs and you potentially have a 37-38 year old Vlasic at a point where the team could be ready to compete for the playoffs or more is not a help on the ice or against the cap. Also moving players involves trying to get some real assets for the future if you are rebuilding.

Heck nobody knows if Price is even going to be back this year or ever at this point.

oh I guarantee you Gorton has every interest in losing for the next 2 seasons to have the best chances at landing Wright and Bedard/Michkov. 100% guarantee. This is how a rebuild works.... Ask PIT, CHI, LA, WSH, TB how sucking and landing top picks for many years worked out for them.

Vlasic will be horrible, but Id rather have $7M on the books than $10.5M..... And Price isnt injured right now, hes taking his time coming back from his absence it seems, and again, theres no hurry in getting him back if the Habs are clearly tanking.

The Sharks need 2 top 6 wingers, a 3C, and a #4 defenseman more than they help at goaltending. Price to the Sharks makes no sense even if it let’s us move Vlasic.

What a bad f***ing trade.

Gorton’s press conference announcing this deal.

Bonjour á tous. We have traded away lifetime Hab Carey Price who carried us to the Stanley Cup Finals just a few months ago for Marc-Édouard Vlasic. Wait! Why are you throwing tomatoes at me?

cus the Habs are bound for another playoff run soon...... riiiiiiiiiiiight.

Everyone and their grandmothers knows this team is rebuilding and have no use for Price anymore.

So your way of thinking trade a great goalie for a useless defence at 7m a year ok you make so much sense.
yeah, youre giving a goalie his probable wish in moving out west on a non rebuilding team, and taking a a cheaper vet Dman (from Montreal no less) who could mentor young Dmen like ROmanov, Guhle, Norlinder, Mailloux.

How else do you think they can trade Price without retaining over 50% of his salary? Lets hear your REALISITIC proposals.

ok, but why keep a declining goalie at $10.5M over a 4-5th D at $7M? Habs arent going to go on another playoff run soon.
Cause he's on LTIR so he doesn't have any impact on the cap?

Vlasic does.
