can't comment like those who were there but from kabc radio it sounded like weal was very much in the game pre-ot. he drew at least 3 penalties and assisted on o'neil's goal. brought the puck in for that play i think? but weal and o'neil both seem like guys with no quit in them. too bad both, i think, would have to clear waivers if the kings don't give them a shot. mersch is that body in front of the net. he did that all last year in manchester too. but seemed like usually other guys set up plays and he was making his presence felt in/around the crease.

Kings are long overdue for injecting some young not named Toffoli or Pearson.

They do it every year.

10-11 - Martinez, Clifford
11-12 - King, Nolan, Voynov
12-13 - Muzzin
13-14 - Toffoli
14-15 - Pearson, McNabb, Shore, Andreoff

That's just the guys still here, minus Voynov. To one degree or another, and at some point during the season, not always straight out of camp. Add in guys like Simmonds, and even Purcell and Moulson, and the list grows a bit more. Toffoli got his first real playing time in the 2013 playoffs, likewise in 2014 for Pearson, but their first full seasons were after that.

Was great to be back at staples for Kings hockey!

Weal impressed me a lot! Kids got skill and I think he makes the team.

1st line looked really rusty. I'm excited to see what they can do when they get familiar with each other.

Forbert's food speed is a bit of a concern. He got burned a couple of times.

That's Mersch game, but he's very good at it. It seems like anyone that likes to go to the net all the time and get positioned should have an easy time scoring all the time. But it's not. Mersch is good on rebounds, screens, tips, etc. When he gets his game going in front of the net he likes to lean on the D. Then create space by pushing off. It's almost like if you were covering him, you just take a step backward and he falls over because you aren't there to hold him up. And as funny as that might sound, Mersch will be down on the ice a lot when he gets his game going.

I wouldn't be too concerned about Forborts skating. He did play the night before in Bakersfield. The only D that did.

agree about mersch, watched a lot of ahl last year. he's the bigger one on that line too so better him in front. not easy to move!

I don't think the first line looked rusty at all. Lucic maybe but.it was the first preseason game. Gaborik, Kopitar and Brown all look noticbly faster. Maybe the offseason was good for them.

Really hard to not like O'Neill. Reminds me of Butch Goring. Weal benefited from the open ice in ot.

Forbort got burned but it was by Boedker one if the faster guys in the league.

I will be in LA this weekend Friday and Saturday. Coming in from Tucson. Is there a schedule up anywhere for whats going on practice wise for the Kings. And I really like Weals game.

I would recommend calling Toyota Training Center and asking them.

Was at the game last night here are some of my thoughts:
1) Brown looks quicker and faster, his hands not so much
2) Really looked at Forbort and MacDermid, liked MacDermid's size and hits everything. Forbort is a smooth skater and looked fine. Took several penalties but I really liked that he came to Doughty's defense when Domi cross checked him.
3) Really like Mersch, is a better skater than I thought. Stays in front of the net, and quick hands especially on his goal. I think will be a better player than King.
4) 1st line had its moments but its preseason, let the chemistry begin.
5) King and Lewis didnt show me much.
6) Weal, like someone mentioned it could be a Williams clone, just knows how to score and be at the right place at the right time. He is small but skates well and knows how to move to not get hit.

I was more impress and probably made it my main objective to keep an eye on the young guys than the veterans. Glad to be back at Staples watching hockey.

Thanks for your assessments!

The truth may well be that: Weal AND Mersch may both be better than:
Lewis, Andreoff, Shore, and yes, even King...but Lewis and King are fixtures
and Sutter likes them. Shore is looking good and may be a lock for 4th line.
So it will be tough for both Weal and Mersch to make this team.

Good assessment on Weal. Truthfully, he's about the same size as Richards,
but only an inch shorter. Weal has way better wheels and overall ability
than the Richards of the last 2 seasons. He's probably even stronger than
the MR of last 2 years. I wish he could be the 3rd line center and move Lewis
down to line 4 wing. Lewis is still better than Andreoff and could play with Shore and
Nolan. Weal would help create offense on line 3 and make King and Brown better than Lewis possibly could.

I will admit i only listened but from what i heard andreoff made a couple of great plays on the pk I think he may have a chance to beat out Nolan A Clifford Weal andreoff 4th line is starting to make some sense to me.

This is the first year in a while--and Sutter's quotes last night referenced this, as well--that several prospects are kicking down the door to potentially multiple roster spots. But in order for any of this to work, we'd need to see an established player move--and I just don't see that happening unless a few guys just absolutely force it. Either way, some tough decisions to be made int he coming days!

I agree that a vet would have to go and may not go until dean finds the right deal. aka like when we traded jj to make room for slava

The vets i see in trouble are King Nolan and maybe lewis. Without our first in this draft i could see us after a extra 2nd for sure. Its going to be a interesting couple of months for sure.

Andreoff can play all three positions, which gives him a leg up over Shore or Nolan. Weal has shown he can play wing.

Is it me or is it just boring seeing the same old Brown, Lewis, King, etc on the ice...I loved seeing all the guys from Manchester.

If the Kings took the entire AHL roster and put in the NHL today I would be much more excited. This team, even though won 2 cups in 4 seasons, just looks stale with the old players sometimes.

I really hope they don't ship out King, I think he's supremely underrated and signed at a decent cap hit right now. If I could clone the guy I'd want him as all of our wings on the bottom 6. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but still.

With all the kids looking good (i admit small sample size) I think it gives Dean a lot of options in trades going forward. I admit Mersh taking over for King is something i am hoping for Yes King is cheap but Mersh is cheaper and looks to me to be better going forward.

I agree 100%. The Kings lack of scoring goes beyond their poor PP and style they
play. The bottom 6 has been about thee worst offensive producing bottom 6 in the league. A big part of that is they do not have anyone on the bottom 6 that can snipe
or create offense. The third line of: King-Lewis-Brown - here we have 3 decent hockey players and all have 2 cup rings and can play the system, etc etc...but not one of them is good at creating chances for themselves and all 3 of them are not great at making plays. Lewis belongs on the 4th line. Weal can create offense, but on the 4th line, with the lkes of Nolan and Andreoff, not much will happen. Weal may be actually be capable of still scoring 10 goals there...but if you put Weal on line 3, between King and Brown, I feel King and Brown may each score 5 more goals woth Weal centering them, than Lewis. Weal creates offense and can score himself, whereas Lewis cannot. A possible 10 more goals could mean the difference of about 4 more wins.

Also, when did Dustin Brown decide he doesn't need to hit anymore? Dude used to run everyone.

Lucic-Kopitar-Gaborik, or at least 2 of those 3 will be Kings for a long time so that line is set...

Pearson-Carter-Toffoli is set for years too.

King-Lewis-Brown....I wish the Kings could make all these players vanish. It would be awesome if some of the guys below were up here. Lewis is a UFA, King has a few more years of his deal and Brown has like 7.

Clifford-Shore/Weal/Andreoff-Nolan/Andreoff/Weal...not bad depending on the mix.

I think Mersch makes King expendable or gives the Kings a back up option if Lucic leaves as a UFA...they can either put Mersch up there or move King up.
