Preds lines for next season right now

I guess it sort of depends on how you define line numbering. Based on ice time this last season 5 v 5 we had the O'Reilly line that got 14-15 minutes a night and three other lines that each got 11-12 minutes a night. Deployment wise we gave the O'Reilly and Novak lines more O-zone starts and the Sissons and McCarron lines more D-zone starts. So really I would say with how we ran things we had a top-3 and a bottom-9.

The more I think about this stuff the more k feel we should just sign Stamkos. Sure he’s older but he won’t cost assets if he hits free agency and I mean we are but we aren’t a young team. Our core guys are stammers age other than Filip.
We have enough top six wingers with Nyquist, Forsberg, Evangelista and either Parssinen or maybe even Novak can play wing or sign/trade for another winger.
But we don’t really have a number one centre. Stammer is that and makes us a whole level better than Marner or tkachuk would.

I'd like Stamkos but I think signing him is pretty much a pipedream. Never say never but outside of us offering way more than the market I don't really see the appeal for him to come here.

What does signing Stamkos accomplish? He's another veteran who'll only play here for like a couple of seasons. Meanwhile, he takes away another spot from a younger player while not being a part of the future of the organization.

I get signing a guy like Pesce, who will be 33-34 when we're making a push with our next core. But I can't see a reason in signing Stammer.

He would accomplish making our team better. Which might help us win a round in the playoffs. It's not like any of our younger players have any chance of being as good as him.

But he's not available, so it hardly matters, of course.

Stamkos is a 30-40 G a season player that would help insulate and lead the young up and coming core. A 3-4 year contract would fit in pretty good with L'Heureux, Kemell, Wood as they gain experience and start pushing into the NHL. We have room for 1 more vet without really pushing out any expected NHL transitions

Forsberg RoR Nyquist
Stamkos Novak Evangelista
Tomasino Pärssinen sissons
Afanaseyev Glass Smith
Jankowski McCarron

That is assuming they don't trade Tomasino or Glass. But there are alot of configurations that could work there. If stamkos wants to go back to center, make ror 2C with Novak and nyquist and put Evangelista with forsberg and stamkos. Nyquist only has 1 more season and is coming off an amazing season. You could also flip that great looking contract to a cap strapped team and use stamkos as free backfill. Or you keep nyquist and treat him as an own rental.

None of it really matters since stamkos isn't gonna be signed here but same principle would apply for Guentzel or Reinhart.

What does a player who averaged over 36 goals and 52 assists per season over the last three seasons accomplish? Really?

The better question is what younger player in our system produces even half as much?

Whose place is he taking? The kids can’t even push 4 AHL tweeners out of the lineup. Adding more talent up top pushes everyone down the roster making it better and forcing guys out of the lineup who had no business being in it in the first place.

He also provides a serial winner to learn from for the kids. You don’t think he’d have an affect like Pavs has had in Dallas?

Didn't we sign O'Reilly and Schenn for that?

Also, at some point you need to have the kids IN THE LINEUP, in order for the vets to teach them. Stamkos would be just another player to push the kids OUT OF THE LINEUP.

Well, not that it matters anyway. We've already signed Jankowski, McCarron and Smith for next year. Sherwood's probably next. So, sure, sign Stamkos and then we can send even Evangelista to the AHL next season!

Some of the kids won't be waiver exempt this time. So we'll be Tolvanening them.

I do fully expect that to happen with at least 1 of them. I don't know which one yet, but out of Afanaseyev, Tomasino, and Parssinen my money is Tomasino is in the lead. The others may follow later.
I know everyone else loves Afanaseyev, but I'm still hesitant on his game translating to anything more than a Sherwood type player.

I think Tomasino is for sure gone before next season starts. If we don't trade him this offseason than I think he's waived after camp and claimed by someone. I just don't see anyway he magically transforms his game into what the team wants out of him this offseason and now he's got even more guys battling for spots with him. Same goes for Glass. Parsinnen has the playstyle that I think he'll be able to stick around but this year was rough for him developmentally so who knows. Afanasyev has good odds of getting waived but I think he's low enough profile that he may be able to sneak through at the beginning of the season.

Despite complaining that we didn't bring him up this season I'm not really all that high on Afanasyev either. He's realistically most likely a 4th liner but I think he does still have the potential for more and I wish we'd given him a bit more opportunity this year. He did exactly what we wanted from him in the AHL so now the question is can he go from tweener to bona fide NHLer.

I see Afanaseyev as a trenin replacement. Big body, pretty good defensively, and can chip in offensively. Probably 15-20 points a season. Nothing that will blow your mind but a good cheap 4th liner that will save us some capspace to use elsewhere. With players like Dakota Joshua and Yakov Trenin being in high demand, I think he would get grabbed off the waiver wire. I'd honestly like to see a 4th line of Afanaseyev - Sissons - Smith to see what happens.

WRT Jankowski, McCarron, and Smith - these are players you sign for the 4th line, 13th forward, and waiver wire AHL experience to help out the team. They can step up if needed but the caphit is also completely buriable. There is no point in having an aneurism about them until we see what Brunette plans on doin with them next season. We can riot next season if we lose a player to waivers in favor of these type of players. Jankowski spent much of last season in the AHL and he can do it again next season.

I don't think we should be signing anymore players that are bottom 6 players - no zucker, Beauvillier, sherwood, etc. Id be ok If we want to grab a Reinhart, Stamkos, Guentzel level player though and actually try to establish an offensive top 9 instead of having a bottom 6 made to grind the opponents to death

Yeah, I'm not sure ANYBODY really "loves" Afanaseyev? Most people just figure he'll be a 4th liner or tweener. But he's OUR 4th liner, produced by our system, and since he's young and hasn't played much here yet, there is at least some tiny sliver of hope for a little more? Not any actual belief or expectation of more. But even that tiny glimmer of as-yet unextinguished hope is more than we have for the rest of the older tweener grinders who are on the team. :dunno:

I am hopeful he has a little more finish, and maybe has a chance at 2nd PP unit with his shot. I am not expecting it though. I believe 3rd line winger with 15-15 is his upside.

I think he can basically replace what Trenin offered us last season. 15-20 points while offering physical play and being responsible in our own end and to contribute to the PK. In a good season, he may offer more and contribute closer to what Dakota Joshua brought this season (30ish points). Either way, we have this player in hand already so we shouldn't need to go gather more. We already have signed vets that can fill that role should Afanaseyev fail (Jankowski, McCarron, Smith) so I don't see the need for another.

I'm not sure I've noticed quite the physical element to Afanaseyev's game, though? He has size, but I don't find he's at all aggressive about using it? I'm not saying he needs to have that either. His hits/60 in his cameos the last couple seasons has been solid. Just I wasn't thinking that it's necessarily going to be a key part of his game... ie not like a Trenin or Joshua type of player anyway. :dunno:

There is more to being physical than hitting, what you really want from that aspect of a players game is not getting pushed off the puck every time someone breathes on him like you would see with Jarnkrok. We need him to be able to muck it up a bit, not steamroll someone in the corner.

You're missing the point from three sides.

We need better top of the lineup talent.

We need guys who we know are playoff warriors.

We need the kids to outplay the guys in the lower part of the lineup so they displace them. If any of them can't outplay guys like McCarron, Jankowski, Smith and Sherwood, we have big problems because if the expectation is for them is to be top 6 talent and they can't displace bottom 6 talent, it doesn't matter if we sign Stamkos and trade for Marner because they still won't have a spot because they can't beat out AHL retreads. THAT'S A BIG PROBLEM!!

One other thing to consider, we loaded up the first line with vets. Adding Stamkos would force Brunette to play a vet with talent with some kids because the last time I checked, I don't think many teams run 4 forwards and 1 defenseman at even strength. This was probably Brunette's biggest failure, not splitting up some of the top end talent to play with some of the young kids with talent. Instead, Novak and Evangelista got to play with guys like Jankowski and Sherwood. Now imagine putting a Stamkos in that spot. Sure makes the top 6 a lot better real fast and it knocked a guy out of the lineup who shouldn't be there in the first place.

Spots are earned and while I think we tend to overcook our prospects, at some point, we need to move away from that and let these kids sink or swim rather than cooking them only to find out they can't make it. How many forwards over the years started in Milwaukee and actually had any sort of impact at the NHL level and by that I mean filling a top 6 role? Forsberg, Arvy, Erat, Radulov and to a lesser extent Sissons. The fact that I'm having a hard time thinking of any more is part of the problem.

Tomasino outplayed all of those guys in terms of points per 60 last year. Pärssinen looked good but was dicked around and eventually his treatment was admitted by the coaching staff that they didn't know what to do with him. Afanasyev got whopping two games (less than the names listed below) and was thrown in the dog house after the Stars defeat where he was the only player not in the minus column. Glass - by some miracle - was the worst "younger" player we had all year and played the most.

This is now a common theme in our player development.

Instead of playing our own guys, we picked up guys like Fagemo, Foudy and Anderson-Dolan off the waiver wire only for them to get waived back almost instantly.

This organization is as short-sighted as they come in player development and it is really starting to show. We will head into next year again as one of the oldest teams in the league and by some magic, we'll call it re-tool.

Glass wasn't good in terms of stats and got injured again. If we get past those, he bought into the system and was doing what was asked of him according to the coaches. He clearly wasn't scoring enough. Ironically, when he finally broke through and had a hat trick, he was perma-benched.

Even in the case of "the worst 'younger' player" we see a situation where we could argue both angles: he sucked and didn't deserve to play AND he was jerked around while trying to find his game and role. (The third hand is he just couldn't stay healthy enough.)

I am SO over trying to build a roster to suit the coach and leaving our prospects withering on the vine in Milwaukee. If the coach is good enough then bloody well figure out how to use the roster you have! For me, just making the playoffs is NOT enough. I am in my last season as a FSTH. I want to see real progress with our picks and prospects. Not retreads and aging vets. Put a solid team together and you won't be so reliant on the goalie to bail you out all the time.
