I'm not so sure giving Tre more capspace to play with in free agency would be the right thing lol
Oh God no. I want Tre gone out of town on the same train that is carrying Shanny and Keefe into exile

Every team has the same cap hit, except for Vegas that year... are we trying to pretend that an extra 10 million wasn't a major advantage for them?

They had a capped out team... Stone was adding a $0 cap hit...
Let me ask you. If we had added Stone for the playoffs would we have won the cup? Do you think we were that close that he would have put us over?

I dunno that Robertson-Domi-Jarnkrok has gelled well.. that might be the depth scoring third line needed

The killer is the fourth line. That third line needs insulating, and the fourth line needs to be that line. Reaves hurts that.
And the goalies suck and the defence sucks and the coach sucks but other then that we got this

If the swapped out D, perhaps

Adding a great two way forward who put up over a PPG. I think there is a good chance... Bob also played some of his best hockey ever, so who knows...

But you're also basically saying the cap doesn't matter while also saying we have too much cap tied up in too few players...

Well every Ron Wilson needs a Randy Carlyle. Who's ready to commit to team defense now.

I’m not saying the cap doesn’t matter. The point I’m trying to make is Vegas is a much better team all way round then us and just adding stone didn’t propel them to the cup.
im sure it helped put them over the top but it certainly wouldn’t have put us over, not with our goal tending, not with our core and certainly not with our 5th supporting cast in 5 years

The supporting cast would have gotten a PPG two-way winger on the third line... that'd go a long way to helping us with our secondary scoring that we desperately needed.

What would have been the forward group?

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Jarnkrok - ROR - Stone
Kerfoot - Kampf - Acciari

something like that? Ya, I think we could have potentially won...

This franchise continues to spin their wheels because they refuse to do things right.

Goaltending and Defense never get addressed properly.

Andersen was solid for a couple seasons. For the first time since Eddie Belfour in 03/04, I felt like the Leafs were getting consistent goaltending night in, night out. There were some stinkers in important playoff games though that eventually sealed his fate here.

Defense wins championships. Leafs passed on Petrengielo, passed on Chycrun, etc. All while putting more emphasis on forwards and scoring. Doesn't work in the playoffs. We've all learned that the hard way.

Handing the keys to an apprentice GM. Didn't learn from the John Ferguson Jr. era obviously.

Handing the coaching job to a rookie coach. Keefe has proven to be awful. Numerous 1st round exits. Two of them to vastly inferior teams in CBJ and MTL. Constantly losing games we should be winning in the regular season. Team rarely starts on time or plays a 60 minute game. Mismanagement of the lines. The most obvious changes take forever to do (Knies on 1st line, Matthews and Marner staples together, etc.)

There's just such a losing culture engrained into this franchise that they can't seem to shake.

It looked like we were making a move out of mediocrity with Shanny/Lou/Babs at the helm. But here were are 8 years later spinning our wheels.

When is it enough? The fans deserve better.

A lot of people called it the day he signed.

But to be fair, he's even worse than predicted.
Im honestly shocked with how awful hes been defensively. We've had players prone to mistakes and guy's who struggled to keep up, but hes been a combination of both somehow

To be fair that was happening with Babcock who his faults aside is a better coach than Keefe.

I find the hate on Keefe to be a little comical...

Last couple of seasons this team has been very very good defensively. That was playing within Keefe's plan/structure. I get there has not been playoff success, so wanting Keefe out for that I get.

We changed a lot of players on the roster this offseason, and almost ALL of the players we lost had a very high defensive acumen. I would argue that ALL of the players we brought in, have a low(er) defensive acumen.

Our PK is shambles in the brain as Marner would say, it is literally atrocious.

We have so many players cheating in risky areas... and our goaltending has been unable to bail the mistakes out shit.

I dunno what a coach is supposed to do with that, but if this continues he will be the one to fall no doubt. For the record, I wanted Keefe replaced in the off-season a I felt bring back the core and the coach made no sense. One or the other had to change.

This is going to be a 'battle for a wild card' season, with yet again a massive fringe turnover for next season after another early playoff exit.

At least we have our first this year and there’s a ton of stud dmen. If things go off the rails, pull a Colorado and reset. Bring in the guys you need to win and draft well.

It’s hard to know where this team is trending. It’s still early.

Biznasaty just broke it down on TNT. Worth the watch. It's only a minute and a half, but he called it like it is. No commitment to playing defensive hockey. Period.

if this is the players not committing to playing defense then they’ve checked out and tuned the coach out. This is more on the players than coach and after 7 years of this time to break up the core.

Matthews, Marner and (likely soon to be) Nylander are the reason the rest of this lineup is inept. Took everything for themselves, left nothing for anyone else. Reap what you sow, losers.
Why do you omit Tavares?

And if Willy gets $10M on his next contract he'll still be the only one of the four outperforming his contract.

Where's that guy that said this team is built for the playoffs?
I don't understand why anybody took that seriously, i was being fictitious lol. I said the team wasn't better than last years in the same comment, how could they be a playoff team?!?! Lmao.

The Leafs are doo-doo my guy. I can't even be bothered to watch the slow motion trainwreck, and at the end of the season when we lose Nylander?

I dunno man, I feel a dark force starting to overtake Leaf land.

We have had different supporting players and different goalies every year over the last 5 years with the same basic result, I wonder what the common denominator is. Could it possibly be the 50% core 4?
This years version is probably the worst the the other 5 years were failures as well
"50% core 4" - you mean Matthews, Tavares, Marner, and Rielly, right? They're the four highest paid.

Yeah, that's a large part of the problem:
Four highest paid - AM, JT, MM, and MR.
Four best forwards - AM, WN, MM, and JT.
Four best players - AM, WN, MR, and MM.

So, TJ Brodie. Excellent career. Solid player. A player like him signing his last major contract with the career he's had almost always gets a extra year added to their deal. Brodie has been excellent for us. This year, is that year. He's on the downside of a solid career. Playing his ass off, but he is declining. Injuries to our blue line has exposed this team. Players like Gio and Brodie tiring late. Klingberg doing a waltz out there. Our blueline was never a strength this season. McCabe isn't great, but right now he is missed. This also exposes a young goalie and a goalie playing for his major contract. Trading Sandin was a mistake. Hopefully by spring Brad has done some upgrading on the blueline.
