Ok... so lets not read too much into it.

Its the Boss. And its a good tune.

What exactly do you mean "let's not read too much into it"? Do you mean into the song choice, or into Springsteen's lyrics and intent? Because Springsteen absolutely wrote it as a critique on the US. It is not a pro-America song in the slightest, and it makes me simultaneously laugh and shake my head when I hear it played as some sort of American Pride song.

Forgive those who don't know what they are playing as goal songs. - It was ****in Lahti where they played; aka "Finland's Chigaco" inhabited by uncivilized apes and ****.

Edit: And the truth is indeed that it is the "Boss"; and he IS a "boss". And these "Lahti apes" don't think twice about the actual 'anti-American' sentiment of the song when choosing something iconic and "American" to cheer American goals there :thumb

Into the song choice. I know what it means and I like the song. Like I say it's a good tune. The person who chose was likely only thinking of the chorus.

People were misappropriating that song 30 years ago and continue to today. It's played like it's an anthem of pride when it's actually a scathing indictment of the realities that were being ignored as you were being sold shining citiy on the hill. It's kind of hilarious.

I don't know which is funnier, the song choice or people getting ******** about the song choice.

... and what it tells about you that you call a whole population of one city apes just for living in the city? And no, I have not any kind of relations to Lahti, just drove through it a few times.

And what comes to song it's probably considered a pro-American song because of its main chorus "I was born in the USA", it sounds "kind of" cool. That's most likely the reason. But after all, are there any good pro-American songs or do you want to hear some Nicki Minaj being played?

You are quite right there, comrade It might tell lowly arrogant things about me etc but it was rather a benevolent inside phrase filled with gentle irony. Lahti soccer fans are called "apes", maybe also hockey fans; I just generalized a bit tongue in cheek. Not the best line of humour from me but I am no Bill Hicks, anyway. Just trying to earn my living. :D

I was primarily watching Finnish squad but here's some thoughts about USA.

Tkatchuk-Matthews-DeBrincat: You could see that they missed the first training game. The line wasn't that visible or dangerous as expected. Had a few good moments on offensive zone but on the other hand had some troubles on d-zone. Tkatchuk was the best piece of the line. He reads the game well and can make himself available for passes. Matthews delivered some good passes and made a good poke check for a winning goal but otherwise nothing fancy of him. DeBrincat didn't seem to have good chemistry with the others on the line but of course it's early to judge by one game. Still he was a disappointment to me.

Milano-Dvorak-White was a decent line. Milano showed his skillset and speed during the game and was chosen the best of US Team. Gotta agree, he was one of the best at least. Nothing bad to say about Dvorak or White either. Loved their work ethics on both ends and I think this is a complete line to WJC.

MacInnis-Schmaltz-Boeser was the line I was expecting the most to see. The North Dakota boys seemed to search a lot of each other in the rink. The line was dangerous and it created a lot of pressure in the Finnish end. On the other hand they didn't do the best job on defensive zone. It looked like the guys were falling asleep on Laine's goal. This line has potential to score lots of goals but based on this game they also have to pick up their defensive game.

Hitchcock-Eansor-Bjork did their job really well. They were great defensively and surprisingly dangerous on offense. Bjork was the biggest surprise of all players - he was simply excellent. Would be insanity to cut him if he plays at this level. It's making more and more sense why US chose to form a "shutdown line". Keller played shifts mostly with this line. He is skilled but to be honest he is really small-framed and doesn't come along with physical battles yet this year. Donato played shifts with second and fourth line. He was okay I guess.

Werenski-Carlo: Aho's SHG was completely on Werenski but otherwise we was decent and was certain with and without puck. Carlo had and will have difficulties with the bigger ice surface but near the own goal he was tough as he should be.

Belpedio-Borgen duo was okay. They had difficulties in own end at times but IMO they were the best d-pair on the o-zone.

Krys-McAvoy: McAvoy impressed me. Plays with high confidence, dares to make offensive runs and seems to be a good passer. Really liked him. Krys was solid too but was a little bit under Charlie's shadow.

Fortunato-Collins was quite invisible. Did their job in the own end and tried nothing fancy.

Halverson-Nedeljkovic were fine. Halverson maybe spit the rebound easily on Aho's goal but he had no shot on Laine's upper corner shot.

yep, funny stuff. catchy chorus is what the song has but makes me cringe when played at USA events. Even Ronald Reagan had to be told not to use this song as it wasn't what many thought it to be...shame.

might as well play some tree-hugger Credence Clearwater song if this is what gets played.

solid game by team USA and a nice start, liked what I saw! God I love having Kodi on my Amazon fire tv!!! has everything on it, great quality for the game as well.

It's a goal song. Most of them have lyrical content that goes as far as screaming "HEY!" I think it's fine.

Any particular reason the teams each wore two jerseys in this game?

Both had dark jerseys so Finland needed to play on Pelicans (FEL team in Lahti) jerseys in the 1st period. By the 2nd period USA got their white jerseys from Helsinki and Finland could play in their blue. That was Finland's fault.

Well, it's a minor detail, but they got them from Vierumäki where the US team is camping, which is a fair bit closer to Lahti. Practically next door.

So there was like 4,000 people in attendance? Do they know they were on a hockey game? What's wrong there? Home team playing and you can't hear anything. I know it is pre-game but still... I hope this is not what we will see in Helsinki.

We Finns are a reserved bunch as is known, also its a preliminary game in the middle of the week. Not really a chance for people to take that certain drink to get that reserved state off.

Helsinki will be probably a lot better because Finnish crowd is like Kasperi Kapanen, shows more interest when it really matters :sarcasm:

Don't know what you are projecting here, but it sure is something that makes you feel bad inside. Merry Christmas to you dude. Take it easy.

I guess most of the people in Europe know that this song is "anti" american. But the rumour has been spreaded in last several years that americans found the peace with that and accept it at least as a goal song. I am not sure now whether it's true or not :) I remember they played it also in WHC 2015.....
