I liked what he did but the guy is unfit to a ludicrous degree

IF he's going to get a role he needs to seriously sort that **** out because that isn't going to work at NHL speed

it was night one of preseason Jesus, give the guy a break. Probably plus all the adrenaline being a hometown guy. He probably exhausted all his engergy

ok, maybe I was watching a different game in an alternate universe, but my thoughts:
Sandin (and Brodie for that matter) had about the worst NHL game I have seen him play. Lilly, on the other hand with Jake, was pretty much perfect. Don't get me wrong, I am fans of both of them, but if you only go by last nights game there was only 1 NHL'r between the two of them.
Bunting impressed. I hope it works out.
Kerfoot was a competent NHL'r but for his salary, I think he will get traded if he doesn't up his game.
Soupman has hands of stone, I don't think he will ever perform offensively to expectations.
JT, Willy, in mid-season form. Nice to see no residual effects from the big hit JT took.
Hutch was not very good, despite the saves. Struggled.
Gabriel is painful to watch skating, its like half of the vertabrae in his back have been fused together or something.Almost looks like a bobble head.
Ho-Sang obviously has skill, but can he fit into the system and play two way hockey, and simplify his offense? Tall order I think.

I like that Mikheyev got the s/o winner, yeah it's a meaningless game but maybe it helps his confidence moving forward. He's always had the tools.

Except he forgets them in the trunk of the car when he needs them. I’ve never seen someone so snake bit. I mean Engvall has better hands. Without pressure Soup looks like a superstar scoring on a shootout. I love his speed, defensive play. He is just going to have to live on the bottom 2 lines.

True.....that was probably a factor. But, his hunched-backed, out-of-breath thing was a little too over-the-top. He reminded me of me when I'm in the last 2o seconds of my beer league shifts. LOL I think more conditioning will help him. I like him though. I'd love him to be a 13th forward type. You can never underestimate what this type of player can bring to a game. Everyone who has played hockey here probably knows how much a headhunting, furious giant can throw off your game. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Demaiter in the stands now and then.

This isn't 1980, your supposed to be professional enough to come into camp and take a regular shift without looking like you've run a marathon halfway through it

He's fighting for a job, he isn't in a position to play himself to physical fitness

That can take months if your well out of shape

the problem is unless it’s a 1v1 straight up, you are losing the deal. Which is why it’s never going to happen under Dubas. I don’t agree with Dubas on a lot of things but I do with this. You ride Nylander, Matthews & Marner till kingdom come. The salary cap will go up

Riding it out until the cap goes up is one option, and it looks like we're headed down that road. It might be another 4-5 years until that happens though so there's a lot of risk attached to this plan, and if we keep losing with this group, there's no guarantee that these guys will stick around. And writing off 4-5 years is brutal under any circumstances, not saying that's quite what we'd be doing, just that there's something to be said for pivoting and trying harder to win now rather than waiting for the cap to go up.

There are many factors that can contribute to exhaustion. This isn’t a full indicator that you are out of shape. You can tell he was overly excited, he probably didn’t sleep from excitement. They even showed him pregame, he was on the bench for about 20 minutes hyping himself up. It’s game 1 of the preseason. He def looked tired but I’m not buying he’s not in shape.

i hope they actually keep the Muzzin - Liljegren pairing.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Dermott - Holl

Agreed. I love Sandin's offensive flair but he is still prone to too many turnovers. I think he could benefit from more seasoning in the AHL.

Rielly/Brodie - Proven chemistry last season
Muzzin/Liljegren - Perfect way to break Liljegren into the top 4 with the insulation of a veteran
Dermott/Holl - Extensive experience playing together in the past, should be a dependable 3rd pairing

Watched the highlights this morning. Nylander looked awesome on his end to end rush and that beautiful pass to Muzzin. Mikheyev's scoreless-on-breakaways record still unbeaten. Sandin getting caught at the blueline not a great sign. Muzzin looked good.

I think it’s worth keeping in mind that Mikheyev was slashed on his breakaway. And then scored on his chance to win the bonus shootout.

I think it’s way to early to o say it’ll just be same ol from last year for him. I mean, it was game 1 of the preseason.

I thought he looked really good tbh

Unfortunately, that's the only thing the highlights showed of him. Glad to hear there was another side to the story.

Lol your the type of poster that keeps me away from here. You parrot others options which are so far off base. He is a superstar. Top 5 in scoring. He has earned his contract. Sucked lol get a grip.

Not good last season 4 in NHL scoring 3 in 5 on 5 points. Yeah he sucked.

What else can we say to keep you from here? I'm making a list.

- Nylander looked dominant, as he should but it's nice to see it out of the gate.
- Spezza still an old beast.
- Was great to see Tavares back in game action.
- Ho-Sang looked pretty good at times but needs to simplify his game, especially to be a more complimentry player. Some time with the Marlies before getting a chance with the Leafs might be best for both sides.
- Liljegren looked good. He's ready for as much NHL experience as he can get; he'll flourish once he gains confidence doing so.
- Bunting looks like what everyone hoped he could be; definitely showed some promise in one preseason game.
- Robertson was okay & needs to be better if he wants to grab a spot opening night.
- Gabriel is entertaining to watch, guy is a freight train. He's obviously limited by his skillset but had a solid game.
- Mikheyev scored in a shootout
