Anyone critical of Marner's game last night needs to give their head a shake. He was very good. He was the only regular from the top 6 in the lineup, and was sharing the PP with Micheyev, Gusev, and I think even Seney at points lol.
I actually think the Leafs showed very well despite having more than a handful of regulars out of the lineup. MTL scored 3 PP goals, of which only 1 was due to poor PK'ing. The other 2 were unlucky bounces that ended in the back of our net. Really not a whole lot to look further into, especially given the fact we didn't have our regular PK lineup.
All n all, the Leafs were the better team 5v5, and controlled large portions of that game. Despite having a rag tag group.
I thought the newcomers looked solid. Kase being the biggest standout.
He and Kampf played very well together, especially later in the game IMO. They were really effective working the puck down low and establishing a cycle. They actually began generating chances later in the game off of that pressure. I'd absolutely love to see a Micheyev - Kampf - Kase line. It would be extremely effective IMO.
I have been openly less bullish on Ritchie's expectations as a top 6 forward, specifically as it relates to playing with Mitch and Auston. However I actually saw enough there yesterday to think it might actually work. He has a lot more footspeed than I gave him credit for. Not a burner by any means, but he doesn't need to gain a step on the defenders to beat them. He protects the puck quite well with his long reach and leans into the pressure quite well, making it easier for him to drive towards the net without having to clearly beat the defender wide. I also think having him trail back in the play will be a massive advantage on that line. Mitch and Auston are dynamic play makers, and will be able to spot a trailing Ritchie for clear look at net plenty of times. I do see where the critiques of his game come from though. He is such a large body out there, that you almost want him to plant someone every time he is out there. There were opportunities for him to take healthy runs at players on a forecheck that he does pass up, and instead gives kind of an excuse me shove in place of finishing his check. Something that say a Josh Anderson on the other side of the game was not doing. I know it may sound like a simple thing, but if we remember in game 5 that type of forward pressure was the exact reason why Sandin double clutched before he burped it up. When players like him consistently finish their checks, defenders feel pressure to get rid of it. It's really simple. If he can finish his checks a bit harder he will be a massively effective player for us.
