He's pretty "solid"

Maybe a lesser version of a Marcus Kruger type.

I think the lack of finish just further cements Soup's spot in the bottom 6 rather than top 6 however I could see a Soup-Kampf-Kase line being pretty fun.
I think it's Kerfoot or Bunting with Kampf/Kase.

I may get shot for this, but i wouldn't mind starting the season with Mikheyev in a top 6 role. Last chance U.

This is how I have it...for now...

Bunting-JT-88
Ritchie-Matthews-Marner (That's where they want to start, Brooks isn't Matthews)
Soup-Kampf-Kase
Kerfoot-Spezza-Simmonds

It could certainly change at some point though, I could see that 3rd line being an absolute pain in the ass to play against.

Marner has always. been good during pre-season and season. It's just playoffs that should be paying attention to.

Rielly Dermy does not work .. bad bad fit .. Rielly needs a defender with him at all times .. he just can't do it on his own .. that's why we can't pay him as he does not have requisite skills on defense .. play Dermy with Holl on 3rd pair he is not developing well enough ..

Up front Mitch, like normal, can't do anything on his own .. til he improves his foot speed straight line and shot he will be an assist man who plays well in da down low creative skills game with a shooter ..

Overall team played better than Habs, except PK, which decided a 'who cares' game

The generally accepted usage in preseason is to send the required minimum of established players to away games, and fill with hopefuls.

So Saturday ours regulars beat their scrubs 4-1, and "there was much rejoicing". Two days later their regulars beat our scrubs 5-2, and "heads will roll".

Welcome to Leafland.

Two squads were split pretty evenly actually.

And the Leafs were better in both games, though last night the PK had issues.

I'd suggest laying off Marner and the others who are locked into spots for their effort, or lack thereof. These games are about getting up to game speed, not impressing the pre-season faithful.

The sky is falling over losing a player that never even touched a Leafs jersey? Was it to protect Holl, or maybe to protect Kerfoot? Were you waiting for an autographed puck from McCann or something?????

That worked up about losing a player that was never a player for the team........odd

Protecting either and losing McCann is a big mistake. McCann is a good player that would have fit in very well here. So yeah I’m pissed about it that we exposed him to protect an AHL defenseman and the most vanilla third line player in the league.

It’s also pretty funny considering marner was the best player on the ice for either team in that game
Yea lool I don't get these comments. I've been shitting on Marner pretty hard this summer but just checked out the highlights for the habs-leafs game

And the only player who created offense was marner and his line in the highlights. He hit a post, set up a few really good chances, and then for some reason not shown in the highlights had a goal he set brooks up for called back against him.

He was stronger on the puck according to the highlights, which I assume was the case for most of the game.

It's a meaningless game for sure but the highlights didn't look like the leafs played poorly, just that no one really cared about a meaningless W/L in a preseason game. Guys were getting their chances and making plays, the preseason is a tune-up to develop chemistry not to go perfect and win a Preseason cup

Kase was solid
Didn't like anyone else's game. Anderson non existence
Kampf scored a flukely goal other than that invisible
Ritchie was ok
Kampf wasn't invisible if you were watching.

Kase scored from the left side of the crease, on a pass from Rielly who was on the right-hand side of the zone. See the play starting at the 3'04" mark of the game recap -- Recap: MTL 5, TOR 2 | NHL.com

Kampf was right at the right side of the crease, engaged and tying up the stick of the Habs' defenceman (Wideman) who would otherwise have blocked the pass. The scoring play would not have happened without Kampf doing the quiet, dirty work in front of the net.

I would look forward to more of that from more of the roster.

I don't think you're supposed to notice Kampf.
He was also +2 in a 5-2 loss, best +/- on the team (Dermott and Gusev +1, everyone else even or negative).

Not that +/- means much at all in a single game, especially a single preseason game, but he did what he was supposed to do. Minimal offensive flair/creativity, but locked things down defensively.

I wonder … will Mikheyev be a 4th liner? I feel like Kampf and Mikheyev both on the 3rd line is too little finish. I’d like to see us try somewhat balanced lines - splitting up Matthews and Marner, and a 3rd line that can bring some legit offence:

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Ritchie - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Mikheyev - Spezza - Simmonds

Obviously the top 6 LWs are weak, but Matthews/Nylander and Tavares/Marner should still be able to bring offensive dominance with weak LWs. And that bottom 6 should actually be two lines that can contribute quite well at both ends of the ice.

Missed the game but from reading the comments, it seems like Marner, Kampt, Kase and Ritchie all had a solid game. Which is good to hear.

Protect the player that disappeared (has three career points) in the playoffs last year for the guy that was one of the top 3 Leaf's all playoffs.
Leaf fans would be all over this guy once he didn't maintain his 15% shooting and was asked to play top 6 C if AM34 or JT were out for any reason.
He would just replace Kerfoot as the whipping boy! Pittsburg made the trade for a reason! He will be an RFA with Arb rights after this season and will require a raise if he maintains his current rate of play(Leafs cant afford his raise). Kerfoot is cost controlled for the next two season and would be moved for a pick/prospect next offseason if the team decides to move on from him. People act like the Leaf's lost a sure fire top six LW/C.

Anyone critical of Marner's game last night needs to give their head a shake. He was very good. He was the only regular from the top 6 in the lineup, and was sharing the PP with Micheyev, Gusev, and I think even Seney at points lol.

I actually think the Leafs showed very well despite having more than a handful of regulars out of the lineup. MTL scored 3 PP goals, of which only 1 was due to poor PK'ing. The other 2 were unlucky bounces that ended in the back of our net. Really not a whole lot to look further into, especially given the fact we didn't have our regular PK lineup.

All n all, the Leafs were the better team 5v5, and controlled large portions of that game. Despite having a rag tag group.

I thought the newcomers looked solid. Kase being the biggest standout.

He and Kampf played very well together, especially later in the game IMO. They were really effective working the puck down low and establishing a cycle. They actually began generating chances later in the game off of that pressure. I'd absolutely love to see a Micheyev - Kampf - Kase line. It would be extremely effective IMO.

I have been openly less bullish on Ritchie's expectations as a top 6 forward, specifically as it relates to playing with Mitch and Auston. However I actually saw enough there yesterday to think it might actually work. He has a lot more footspeed than I gave him credit for. Not a burner by any means, but he doesn't need to gain a step on the defenders to beat them. He protects the puck quite well with his long reach and leans into the pressure quite well, making it easier for him to drive towards the net without having to clearly beat the defender wide. I also think having him trail back in the play will be a massive advantage on that line. Mitch and Auston are dynamic play makers, and will be able to spot a trailing Ritchie for clear look at net plenty of times. I do see where the critiques of his game come from though. He is such a large body out there, that you almost want him to plant someone every time he is out there. There were opportunities for him to take healthy runs at players on a forecheck that he does pass up, and instead gives kind of an excuse me shove in place of finishing his check. Something that say a Josh Anderson on the other side of the game was not doing. I know it may sound like a simple thing, but if we remember in game 5 that type of forward pressure was the exact reason why Sandin double clutched before he burped it up. When players like him consistently finish their checks, defenders feel pressure to get rid of it. It's really simple. If he can finish his checks a bit harder he will be a massively effective player for us.

Honorable Mentions:
-Mrazek looked sharp
-SDA looks better at higher levels. Makes very little sense
-Rielly 5v5 was wheeling, Poor on PK.
-Mennel can play, Gusev cannot
-Brooks is a player. Would love to see him get more of an
opportunity

The guys with spots solidified, infer nothing from their first preseason game. It’s the marginal and young guys, even here the first game is suspect to extrapolate. Just one preseason it would be nice to not over analyze, we’ve seen so many guys look great then fall on their face as soon as the season starts. Conversely, if people think you’re going to fly through the neutral zone like we’ve seen in October, forget it, and laughable by March.

I don’t care if a vet dominates or not, if anything I want them to pace themselves. This is meaningless, apart from timing and fitness and nobody here will remember anything about the preseason in a few weeks. Guys who need to make an impression, the only thing remotely instructive.
