Marner line looked good. That’s important.
Reilly had some impressive offensive play but looked to be taking it easy. Hate seeing core vets play without intensity even if it is the preseason.
Mrazek is going to give up 1.5 bad goals every game and look amazing the rest of the time. He’s like a better Bernier.

GG. Maybe don't take so many penalties and we win.

Marner was the best player for the Leafs, and I don't think it was close. Kase, Brooks, and Mennell all were awesome. I liked SDA, Anderson, and Dermott.

I didn't like Rielly & Holl. Dahlstrom and Seney were outright awful. Gusev & Simmonds were invisible.

Everyone else was fine (I'm not judging the goalies).

With a half roster, Marner should be head and shoulders better than everyone else...

The version of Rielly we saw tonight is a good case for not going crazy to re-sign him. Rielly was great in the playoffs, but there were long stretches last season where he kind of looked like tonight, completely discombobulated one shift to the next, make beautiful plays here and there, and just run around defensively like it's 2015.

You're really gonna compare playoff performance to Cosby? Compare them at the same age.

Marner has no goals in 18 playoff games, in his 4th season alone Crosby had 15 goals in 24 playoff games.
Just stop, it's not even game one, c'mon...

Bernier isn't the worst comparison. He's also similar to Campbell. Both Mrazek and Campbell have the ability to get white hot. But can be leaky at times. Considering that we're paying them both about half of Vasi's salary in Tampa, we'll need these guys to be used intelligently and strategically and hope we get a bit of good luck.

I also wouldn't be surprised if we had to go out and reinforce during the course of a season by adding a 1C goalie like a Korpisalo and Georgiev. If Campbell falters, I could see us getting a tandem goalie beyond this season.

Marner was not the problem in this game. He played well.

Bad penalty kill cost them the game.

overall, the team was fine.

I just looked at Campbell's SV%. I missed the first half of the game.

was he hung out to dry?

He wasn't great, but our PK defense was worse. Probably the most concerning part of this game, but not really that big of a concern. The rest of the bad spots were guys who are likely going to be first round cuts (Gusev, Seney, Dahlstrom) or are already on the fringe (Simmonds) having bad/underwhelming games.

Semyonov, Menell, and Brooks were the fringe guys who had really good games. Anderson, Rubins, and SDA were solid but unspectacular.

Marner was head and shoulders above everyone else IMO.

Anyone else very impressed with Der-Arguchintsev? Not to imply he's NHL-ready by any stretch, because he certainly isn't, but imo he showed a lot in terms of general playmaking ability - hands, vision, patience, creativity were all quite on point.

....so Crosby has just been a gutless quitter the last 3 years? Right? Right?

Had nothing to do with injuries or goaltending differential. Personally, I'm locking him in as 2nd line center on team Canada.

Marner haters look like cartoon characters to me more and more.

I feel like Campbell is more dependable and fundamentally sound (thank god) but he isn’t a showstopper goalie like Mrazek can be when he is on fire. Campbell is perfect for this team I think, unless they have one of the absolute top guys.

Gusev always sucks and Simmonds has been done for a few years now. Waste of a roster space, IMO.

Don't even know why the Leafs brought him back. Flyers fans have wanted him gone for a long time with good reason. Should've signed Perry when we had the chance before and now I'd rather see Brooks or almost anyone else in the lineup than him.

Dahlstrom just lost any chance at the 8th d man spot or should have. I'll take Kral and Hollowell over him pretty easily. Merril was fine.
Holl is probably penciled in as he should, but this game helped Sandin and especially Liljegren's chances of making the team.
SDA's been a pleasent surprise through 2 games, but maybe not since he always performs well in higher competition.

I am probably way too high on SDA, but I've thought for a couple of years now he has that he has the potential to be a really good fit on Matthews' wing.

Amirov - Matthews - SDA

looks good to me as a potential future line.

Rielly at ES was excellent.

Rielly on PK was a bit of an adventure, although we didn't have a single "good" PKing defenseman today. It was a range of total disaster (Dahlstrom and Holl), to generally mediocre (Rubins and Menell). Rielly and Dermott were somewhere in between. Had a few bad plays, one which led to a goal, but were generally fine otherwise.

I feel like people got hung up on a few highlights, and especially that one goal against, which overrode the fact that Rielly was the best defenseman on either team by a large margin today.

Habs had an overall edge in PP time but final stats from the game:

Corsi: 69-34 Leafs
Shots: 37-21 Leafs
Scoring Chances: 41-22 Leafs
High Danger Chances: 12-10 Leafs

Good game overall that helped expose some obvious plugs that are going to be in the first round of cuts. Really like that Kase, Ritchie and Kampf showed what they are capable of bringing this season.
Why are you or anyone analyzing a meaningless preseason game?

Nothing matters until Playoffs that has to be the leafs mantra ala 2018 Caps

Leafs are making the playoffs for sure. Whether it's 1st or 2nd wild card is redundant.

Leafs have shown playing a better team doesn't matter, playing a worse team doesn't matter.

Having home ice advance doesn't matter and not having home ice advance does matter

Leafs 1st round series will be a 7 game series vs Tampa or Boston most likely. Every game in the regular season will be more on the mental side and ability to get out on time, making the winning plays versus dominating the team in shot generation and/or blowing teams out

Those will happen for sure, but this season is a buildup until the playoffs and most likely till round 1 game 7 which will showcase if the teams grown or not

Getting to happy or upset over preseason games for the team and individual players is pointless and needlessly worrying for a fanbase that is already depressed out.

Not aiming this specifically at you. Just saying people need to watch and enjoy and if things are wrong as the season moves on then fine display displeasure. It's much much too early for any conclusions either way
