Somehow I get the feeling that Pronmans draft list this year is not based on his own opinion so much but he has mixed up a lot of what he has heard on what teams are intending to be drafting.

For example, his statement about Daniil But, top 9 pick in his board:
"Even though I don’t see a high-end trait other than his size, But checks every box and projects to be a major part of an NHL lineup."

Does that scream like top 10 guy in draft?

He seems to give really heavy value for size over anything else nowadays.

I have nothing against But as a player but i just find his analysis bit odd if you think about draft position.

He does this every year, especially as the draft gets closer. Last year he made multiple last minute changes within days of the draft clearly based on conversations with NHL teams. It's a strange tactic honestly because A). he's paid to have his own opinion and B). NHL teams often make mistakes as well

In all fairness, Pronman's top 23 last year all went in the 1st round. That is a hard feat.

The issue is that that isn't the feat you should be trying to emulate.

Mock drafts and rankings should be two different things.

Also on the But ranking. A lot of people have him top 15 based on what I've heard.

No problem with But top 15. 6'5, can fly, soft pass touch. There's a bit of Blake Wheeler there.

True. You should at least distinguish clearly that one is your draft on how you feel about players and one is mock draft on how you expect draft will go.

Now it's half assed mixed bag even if you just look at how much he moved guys around from his last ranking.

This is kinda getting off topic already but oh well...

I've always thought that making a distinction between a ranking, and a mock draft, is merely to create an out when things don't pan out for the ranking. If your player ranking doesn't mirror what actually happens on draft day, what good is it?

I've also noticed that those who value junior scoring stats and ignore defensive play use this argument.

Very weird take. The purpose of rankings is not to forecast what happens on draft day, but rather to rate players on their potential to flourish as professionals.

Considering that teams always get things wrong at the draft, the person who ranks players should not really concern himself with what happens on draft day.

I recall making a mock draft shortly before the 2017 NHL draft, and I knew that Nolan Patrick would go first or second. But he was not in my personal top 5.

And the rankers get it right? C'mon. You hear about it endlessly when they hit on a prospect they ranked highly, but they are nowhere to be found, otherwise.

I will listen a bit more to some of the Euro, and especially Russian "rankers", because they are underscouted, I believe, and underdrafted, but otherwise ... it's an excuse for their inability to look beyond numbers. Any idiot can look at a stat sheet.

That's what a mock is for, not a ranking.

A mock is supposed to accurately predict what happens on draft day.

A ranking is supposed to predict who is actually going to be the best 5+ years from now once the dust has actually settled.
Pretending that GM's aren't looking five (or whatever) years ahead, but rankers are? Again, c'mon.

My take is that teams have drafting bias and team needs they try to fill on draft day. So if a team is badly in need of a dman, they might take a 10th ranked player 5th. Hence the discrepancy.

2013 comes to mind.

Everyone in Oilersphere knew they were taking a dman. Picking 7, you knew they weren't going to get Jones, but had to decide between Zadorov, Ristolainen and Nurse. They actually made the best pick because although he has faults Nurse was the best of the three. (Although if they would have stretched, Morrisey was probably the best choice for them at 7.)

GMs also take into account team makeup and current prospect makeup.

My goal of ranking players is to rank the players in the order that would be the most accurate to a redraft in 20 or so years.

For example, I would prefer to have ranking A over ranking B.

Ranking A:
1st redrafted 1st
2nd redrafted 4th
3rd redrafted 5th
4th redrafted 6th
5th redrafted 8th
6th redrafted 10th
7th redrafted 7th
8th redrafted 13th

Ranking B:
1st redrafted 1st
2nd redrafted 4th
3rd redrafted 5th
4th redrafted 6th
5th redrafted 3rd
6th redrafted 40th
7th redrafted 33rd
8th redrafted 2nd

I like it. I don't see too many people that are a bit lower on Carlsson that are high on Dvorsky.

Last 2023 draft ranking for me. Did a whole top 80 and a top 10 for goaltenders, not something I usually do but I feel there was a lot of similar quality players from 35-75 so I had a hard time putting a stop to the ranking.
