I guess now is a good time to provide an update. CHL regular season is over and NCAA is all but over.

Still lots of hockey left that I have earmarked to watch. A bunch of MHL games, I have barely seen the Russian prospects play. Will be a focus from now until the draft. Because of this, Michkov is my only Russian I have ranked as I have seen him play enough.

CHL playoffs will also be a focus and of course the Under 18. World Championships with a focus on Reinbacher. And then some tape on the NTDP I want to watch even though I feel pretty good about my conviction on those players. I hope they don't remove any of the streams on the ntdp website from now until the draft.

So still a lot of room for change, but this is where I'm currently at. Will have a top 64 and write ups come June.

Thank you for the write-up, I'm too lazy to do that these days.

I find it interesting how we can have very similar reads on players' skillsets, but our conclusions on their potential can vary so much.
It's not a surprise though as scouts and NHL professional often have it wrong, although some of the misses is due to injuries and development issues, ie being rushed or blocked.

I also have Lardis in that range. If he has a great tournament he can go as high as 15 IMO

Here is my first round. With just a brief synopsis of each player.

1 Bedard, Connor; Center
Strengths: Game Changing Skill; Unbelievable Shooting Ability; Continues to Improve Despite Dominance
Weakness/Questions: Is Bedard a Center at the NHL level due his lack of size and truly elite skating ability? He Will Need to Limit Turnovers
2 Fantilli, Adam; Center
Strengths: Rare Combination of Size and Phenomenal Skating Ability; Elite Puck Possession; Great Athleticism; Elite Transition Game
Weakness/Questions: Can Fantilli improve overall playing ability? Fantilli possess elite tools, however there are questions regarding his ability to generate chances in the offensive zone. While Fantilli has great positioning in the offensive zone, you don’t often see much creativity from him in the offensive zone.
3 Michkov, Matvei; Winger
Strengths: Elite Offensive Tools (Shot, Hands, Playmaking Ability); Creativity in the Offensive zone; Eye-Popping Production at Every Level; Extremely Dangerous With the Puck in the Offensive Zone
Weakness/Questions: Diminutive Frame; Average Skating; Can be Uninvolved Defensively; High Risk/High Reward Player
4 Carlsson, Leo; Winger/Center
Strengths: NHL Frame; Mature Style of Play; Elite Playmaking Ability; Elite Hands; Very Few Weak Areas in Game
Weakness/Questions: Needs to Improve Acceleration Despite Good Top Speed; Hasn’t truly Dominated on NA Ice; Is he A Center or Winger?
5 Smith, Will; Center
Strengths: Size and Skill to be Center at NHL Level; Elite Skill; Has the Rare Ability to be Equally Effective as a Sniper or Playmaker in the Offensive Zone; Elite Hands; Offensive Weapon
Weakness/Questions: Lacks Motor; Relies too Heavily on Teammates going to Dirty Areas; Inconsistent at Times; Needs to Improve Decision Making in Transition
6 Benson, Zach; Winger
Strengths: Motor/Workrate; Elite Vision; Elite Hockey IQ and Decision Making; Play Driver; Phenomenal Lateral Movement; Two-Way Player; One of the Best Transition Players in Draft;
Weakness/Questions: Undersized; Lacks Elite Shooting Ability;
7 Cristall, Andrew; Winger
Strengths: Motor/Workrate; Elite Hockey IQ; Great Hands; One-on-One Ability; Play Driver; Elite Playmaking; One of the Best Pure Offensive Players in the Draft
Weakness/Questions: Average Skating in Combination with being Undersized; Defensive Involvement; High Risk/High Reward this Early in Draft
8 Leonard, Ryan; Winger
Strengths: One of the Best Shooters in the Draft; Physicality; Great Hands; One-on-One ability; Strength and Athleticism; Powerful Stride; Goes to the Dirty Areas;
Weakness/Questions: Attempts too many individual plays; Will his game translate to professional hockey?; Needs to improve playmaking ability and teammate utilization
9 Moore, Oliver; Center/Winger
Strengths: Some of the Best Hands and Skating in the Draft; Excellent Motor; Two-Way Ability; Good Playmaker; Great Compete; Good Anticipation of Contact
Weakness/Questions: Most Likely a Winger at the NHL Level; Stick Handles Himself into Bad Positions at Times; Lacks Elite Shooting Ability; Must get More Upper Body Strength
10 Heidt, Riley; Center
Strengths: Elite Speed; Great in Transition; Solid Playmaking Ability; Great Shooting Ability; Could be a Center at the NHL level with his combination of skating and playmaking ability; Good Two-Way Center
Weakness/Questions: Needs to improve decision making at times; Doesn’t Necessarily have Elite Offensive Tools; Not Sure How Much Offensive Game will Translate to NHL
11 Sale, Eduard; Winger
Strengths: Playmaking Ability; Great Decision Making with the Puck; Dynamic Offensive Skill with Great Hands; Excellent Skating; Underrated and Perhaps Underutilized Shot
Weakness/Questions: Inconsistent; Can be a Bit of a Parameter Player; Needs to Fill Out His Frame; If He’s Not a Top 6 Forward, He Probably Doesn’t Play in the NHL
12 Yager, Brayden; Center
Strengths: One of the Best Shots in the Draft; Powerful Straight-Line Speed; Good Playmaking Ability (that continues to improve); Could Project as a Center; Lot of Potential
Weakness/Questions: Very Inconsistent Offensively; Must Improve Lateral Movement; Decision Making is Lacking at Times; Uninvolved Defensively; Very Raw Player at This Point; Could be High Risk in the Top 15
13 Dvorsky, Dailbor; Center/Winger
Strengths: Projects as a Center; Plays with an Edge; NHL Frame; Great Two-Way Ability; Great Shot; Good Playmaking Ability
Weakness/Questions: Does he have the Offensive Tools to Produce at the NHL Level? Doesn’t Drive Play; Overall Skating could Stand to Improve; Offensive Consistency
14 Reinbacher, David; Defenseman
Strengths: NHL Frame; Mature Game; Well-Rounded Two-Way Defender; Good Physicality; Can get Pucks Up the Ice; Very Safe Pick; Not Many Weaknesses
Weakness/Questions: Average Skater; Lacks Elite Offensive Tools; Can be too Passive in Defensive Zone at Times
15 Brindley, Gavin; Winger
Strengths: Extremely Competitive; Elite Skating Ability; Great Two-Way Player; Goes to the Dirty Areas; Great Playmaking Ability; Motor/Workrate; Versatile; Great Hands and Vision;
Weakness/Questions: Diminutive Frame; Must Get Stronger; Average Shooting Ability; Can he Become a True Play Driver?
16 Simashev, Dmitri; Defenseman
Strengths: NHL frame; Good Skater for Size; Can get Pucks Up the Ice; Smart in the Defensive Zone; Good Stick Work; Seems like a Safe Pick
Weakness/Questions: Not Overly Physical for a Big Player; Offensive Production is Lacking; He Shows Flashes, But Does He Have Untapped Offensive Potential?
17 Musty, Quentin; Winger
Strengths: NHL Frame; Great Hands in Tight; Powerful Shot; Athleticism; Good Playmaking Ability; Great Raw Tools
Weakness/Questions: Inconsistent Offensive Production; Inconsistent Physicality; Decision Making is a Concern; Ineffective Shooting Despite Great Shot; Very Raw Player; Needs to Improve Acceleration; Can he Improve Processing Speed?
18 Danielson, Nate; Center
Strengths: NHL Frame; Great Two-Way Ability; Projects as a Center at the NHL Level; Good Playmaking Ability; Good Top Speed; Good Shooting Ability; Great Defensive Stick Work
Weakness/Questions: What is His Ceiling?; Acceleration Can Improve; Shot Utilization; No Elite Offensive Tools at This Point
19 Sandin-Pellikka, Axel; Defenseman
Strengths: Elite Vision; Great Lateral Movement and Speed; Power Play QB; Good Shooting Ability; Great In the Offensive Zone
Weakness/Questions: Needs to Get Stronger; Takes Too Many Risks; Needs To Improve Neutral Zone and Defensive Zone Play; Needs to Get Better Without the Puck on His Stick
20 Ritchie, Calum; Center
Strengths: Great Playmaking Ability; Great Decision Making and Processing Speed; NHL Frame; Plays a Mature Game
Weakness/Questions: No Outstanding Intangibles/Tools; Average in Many Areas; Needs to Continue to Improve Skating;
21 Gulyayev, Mikhail; Defenseman
Strengths: Powerful Skater; Best Raw Offensive Tools of Any Defenseman in the Draft; Great Playmaker; Power Play QB;
Weakness/Questions: Defensive Zone Decision Making; Turnovers; Slight Frame; Must Get Stronger; Must Improve Success in 50/50 Battles
22 Wood, Matthew; Winger
Strengths: NHL Frame; Great Shot; Good Puck Protection; Heavily Relied Upon as a Freshman; Good Raw Tools
Weakness/Questions: Must Improve Overall Skating Ability it is a Big Concern; Decision Making With the Puck (shoots far too often when there is a better play); Will He Be a Top 6 Forward or Bust?
23 Perreault, Gabe; Winger
Strengths: Phenomenal Vision and Playmaking Ability; Very Smart Player; Good All-Around Offensive Instincts; Willing to Go to the Hard Areas; Versatile Player
Weakness/Questions: Skating a Bit Lackluster; Undersized; Is He a Complimentary Winger or Can He Drive Offense at the Next Level?
24 Brzustewicz, Hunter; Defenseman

27 Cagnoni, Luca; Defenseman
Strengths: Great Puck Mover; Great Offensive-Zone Decision Making; Tape-to-Tape Passing Ability; Good Skating and Lateral Movement; Serious Threat When Pinching in Offensive Zone
Weaknesses/Questions: Undersized; Finds Himself Out of Position at Times; Lacks Good Shooting Ability; Needs to Improve Play Defensive Zone; Must Get Stronger
28 Price, Caden; Defenseman
Strengths: Good Frame; Great Mobility; Well-Rounded; Good Puck-Moving Ability
Weaknesses/Questions: Very Raw Player; Needs to Continue to Mature and Improve in All Ends of the Ice; Must Get Stronger and Fill Out Frame; Does he Have More Offensive Upside?

I don’t think Smith’s skating is bad at all. He can get up to a good speed. The way he plays the game makes him seem slow. He plays with a lot of patience but he doesn’t play with much motor.

When he moves his feet, he can skate for sure.
Skating is junior level average at best, motor very very low, slacks of the backcheck, soft on pucks, doesnt hustle or forecheck either, poor defensive work, no physical involvement or puck protection skills. Kid is physically pretty weak at this point, not sure how you can describe him as having good size, he is barely 6 ft. tall, weighting about 170 lbs and plays like he was 5'7. I mean, kids like Benson, Brindley, Moore are smaller and all play much bigger. Smith has 0 grit to his game and is really soft out there, will need to hit the gym big time and make serious adjustments to his game cause he will hit a wall at higher levels. I have him mid first since talent alone cant lead you very far these days, you need to be competent on 200 ft. when you reach the pro level, especially the NHL one. I also think he is closer to Perreault than 5th OV.

On the positive side, he has great vision, creativity to his game, great hands and playmaking.

That's called paying the "Canada Premium" and if your team's front office drafts that way, you may have a bad time.

Example: the above comedy of having Benson ranked higher than Carlsson.
Plz link your top 32

Which Euros am I missing? My Canadian bias also has Michkov #2 over Fantilli, Dvorsky #9, Gulyayev #12, Mølgaard #19, Kantserov #21.

There are just a lot of good Canadians this year my guy.

Mid first is just too low for a player with as much talent as Smtih. He has legit game breaking ability and his offensive numbers don’t lie and I think this is a pretty bad take.

Who do you have ahead of Smith where he is in the mid first? Colby Barlow? Because Barlow throws a hit sometimes? Will Smith is an extremely talented hockey player who can legitimately drive offense. While I agree that his motor is lacking, he is not slow by any means. Regardless, Smith is easily a top 10 pick.

Only on team USA, I have Ryan Leonard and Oliver Moore over him, both have translatable tools while Smith will require years of development, strengthening and polishment, the bust factor is much higher with Smith and Perreault.

Moore will bring you 60-70 pts per year being a motor on his line, bringing pace, skating, hard work and 200 ft commitment, weither thats down the middle or on the wing. He is a swiss knife you can use in all situations.

Leonard is a small powerfoward with great hands, high end shooting and goalscoring abilities, possibly a future 35-40 goal scorer in his prime, someone who competes hard on both sides of the puck in the same mold as Moore.

I ended up ranking Wright 10th OV last year for basically the same reasons Im dropping Smith.

Take a look at this, alot of cheating, passivity and low effort level, this is not what Im personally looking for in a top 10 pick.

His game without the puck is a joke, take a closer look at the 8:30 min mark where he just let his man go without giving a single effort, I mean, even pro level women hockey players have more grit to their game.

A year from now when Will Smith has shredded college hockey while adding a good amount of muscle and smoothing out his weaknesses a bit in a far more structured type of hockey, people can pretend to be surprised. We can call it "pulling a Cooley"

I think Smith might do that to us, that's why I haven't dropped him down to 12-20.

But that's not how it went for Cooley. Cooley always had high motor and great skating, and his defensive involvement was never that bad and isn't much improved now.

You're right that people did question Cooley for unstructured play but some correctly interpreted that as Cooley experimenting and pushing the boundaries of his game. With Smith "just standing around" it's a different problem.

One suggestion is that as Smith improves the efficiency of his stride and improves his conditioning, he'll have more energy to play a complete game. I wonder if there's room left for improvement there. NTDP kids are usually in great shape.

Agree that adding a good amount of strength might correct some of his flaws at some extend, but how much strength/power can he add to his frame from now and would it fix the little interest he seems to have on the defensive side of the game? I highly doubt his motor or 200 ft. game will ever be very good, but if he can improve it to be just "ok" and trustable, its probably enough to have a nice NHL carreer with the skills level he has. At the end, he remains a 3-4 yrs project for me with some red flags and a higher bust potential than some others. It would be pretty hard to justify passing on a center like Dvorsky in favour of Smith at that point IMO.
