Last 2023 draft ranking for me. Did a whole top 80 and a top 10 for goaltenders, not something I usually do but I feel there was a lot of similar quality players from 35-75 so I had a hard time putting a stop to the ranking.
It seems like you added a bunch of guys to your list after they had a strong U18s. Instead of focusing on how a guy like Unger Sörum goes from NR to first-rounder, I'll ask just one question: What made you rank Linus Brandl after the awful U18s he had?

I didnt think he had an awful u18s personally. Are you referring to his production? Certainly it is not world breaking but I think he was more than good.

He displayed a good gambling skillset for me, not a superb skater but he has tools that have me perplexed and a long path to the NHL.

My original list wasnt that long, it was mostly a rough draft with about 40 names solidlly ranked going up until 70, but Ive always had 100+ names on the watch. Id say the u18s played a part mainly for Stenberg and Haltunnen, the rest didnt really change from the league play exposure.

Not his production. Never expected that to be high. But I watched him a ton throughout the year, liked him quite a bit, and didn’t think he was able to show much of it at the U18s. Yes, he’s smart. But he clearly shows his skating and puck skills aren’t up to par compared to other prospects in this class.

Which is where the long road to the NHL comes in, and the interviews. I feel theres something there if he can work on his physical skills a lot. Its tough for kids that make that big of a jump too IMO, no disrespect to Germany but if any of you watched footage of the u20 leagues there, it isnt always pretty lol.

The only surprising thing I saw on your list is Gauthier at 14, why do you think you like him better then most other scouts?
Ha I knew I might get this. It's fair, but I really like his high-motor and explosiveness, plus good IQ. He has great hands and good speed that make him a dangerous talent when he's at his best level. His finishing isn't always perfect but he had 30 Goals this year. I see a lot of assets in his game, and a lack of flaws, that makes me think he could be a good middle-six forward in the NHL.

Chicago Bedard - Its like the faith, that year Toews and Kane dissapears, the new generational talent comes to town. A shot to take is that P Kane my sign for playing with Bedard. But I think he signs elsewhere for a last shot at the cup. Actually.

Anaheim - Fantelli. You build through centers.

Columbus - W Smith.
This is a hard one. Leo Carlsson isnt that dynamic. He could be a Elias Lindholm player I think. MIchkov is taking to longtime, and Columbus needs centers. Not wingers. Leo or Smith

San Jose - Leo Carlsson
With Erik Karlsson and William Eklund, its a interresting fit woth Leo Carlsson

Montreal - Ryan Leonard

Arizona Coyotes - Matvei Michkiv. Its worth that gamble with all those picks.

Philadelphia Flyers - Oliver Moore

Washington Capitals - Nate Danielson, C

Detroit Red Wings - - David Reinbacher

St. Louis Blues - Dalibor Dvorsky

Vancouver Canucks
- Zach Benson

Arizona Coyotes - Gabe Perreault

Buffalo Sabres - Brayden Yager,

Pittsburgh Penguins - Axel Sandin Pellikka

Nashville Predators - - Matthew Wood, RW

Calgary Flames - Eduard Sale

Montreal - Colby Barlow

Detroit - Ethan Gauthier (RW)

Winnipeg - Samuel Honzek

Chicago - Andrew Cristall

Seattle -

Minnesota - Calum Ritche

Columbus - Mikhail Gulyayev (D)

Rangers - Oliver Bonk (D)

I do think that MTL is going to do very well in this draft, considering that they have the #5 pick. They will have one of Carlsson, Michkov, or Smith to choose from. Carlsson would be a no brainer, Michkov intriguing because of the promise of his star power for a team that craves one, and Smith would be a nice consolation prize.

Yeah, the top 5 was always the place to be in this draft.

You can certainly make an argument for them and I wouldn't be surprised if they'd go in the first half of the first round.

Though, someone has to fall and I think there'll be a couple of guys available in the 18 - 25 range people wouldn't really expect there.
No doubt. You really never know what's going to happen. I think a lot of GMs value physicality. Whether it's play style or just bigger guys, that gets weighted against skill. So you see a Hutson or Firkas slide even though they're clearly more skilled than some guys taken before them. How successful they are in the NHL remains to be seen but I think we'll get the same type of sliders this year.

There's no such thing as a wrong mock though (or a right one).
