Can't make too deep off a list because I haven't seen too much of the players yet to get the full picture.

This is one of the years where it is easy to agree that Wright should be first pick.

I really like Jiricek, Cooley and Nemec and could be convinced to switch places by each other. I just like Jiricek's size, skating, playmaking abilities and decision making speed too much at least right now when compared to others.

Kemell is ahead of Slafkovsky because he has shown that he has ability to be more consistently productive in men's league. He is just more of a finisher than playmaker although he can complete simple passes often enough.

Overall, it's really hard to go absolutely wrong with my top 6 picks. After that, the risk factors start to increase per each player.

I still reserve my rights on judging the two most interesting russians in this draft, Miroshnichenko and Yurov since I haven't seen them much yet.

If there is notable names missing, I just haven't seen them enough yet or there is very little material available on them.

I am still debating a bit if I should put Nemec ahead of Cooley but I am not absolutely sure yet.

group 1:
Shane Wright

group 2:
David Jiricek

group 3:
Joakim Kemell
Juraj Slafkovsky

group 4:

Always makes me smile to see so many NTDP players ranked too high. I wonder where Cooley, Nazar, Gauthier and others would be in the standings if one played for Erie the other one for Windsor et one in Niagara. They get too much credit playing on a stacked program. Not saying they’re not good just ranked too high. The team you’re in plays a big role in your draft.

But this does not mean that they do not deserve this place. We can remember the 2019 draft, there were also a lot of players from there.

If you are willing to take the time, a number of interesting questions arise from this list.
  • What pushed you to rank Slafkovsky ahead of Wright?
  • What pushed you to rank Mateychuk (who I’m a huge fan of, by the way) as a top-5 prospect, ahead of Nemec?
  • What do you see in Kasper that encourages you to rank him well ahead of the consensus?
  • Why do you prefer Howard to Cooley and Nazar?

I find it interesting that Slafkovsky has become everybody's number 1 after 5 or 6 games. Is he really the number one, has he been overlooked, has he improved that much, or did he just look dynamic over that short period of time?

1. Olympics mainly. I never liked Wright though
2. I like Mateychuk’s confidence with the puck. Nemec has been lighting it up lately and if he continues I might slide him up over Mateychuk but i like Denton’s skating and puck handling better. Nemec seems unsure a lot of the time and gives up many turnovers. Again it’s been better lately so we’ll see going forward. I think they’re very close but I’ve liked Mateychuk’s game better overall
3. I like his aggressiveness and forechecking. With more ice time I could see him tapping into his offensive potential as well. Safe bet to be an NHLer, I like his chances as an all around middle 6 guy.
4. I like his speed and he has a low center of gravity and strength on the puck which I believe will translate well. Another guy who I think has surefire NHL potential whereas Cooley’s game leaves me unsure. Nazar I don’t like at all. Not in my top 25. Nazar I see as a fringe NHLer a la Pirri, Weal, etc

I see it as a positive. They practice with better players, practice against better players. Best on best. Forces a bunch of guys that have been superstars their whole life to play a role on a team. So if you can be a go to guy in the program it’s impressive because you had to beat out a lot of the best US born players in the country.

It’s not a perfect model for NHL development of course and there are pros and cons to every route— but I think the consolidated talent is a big positive in the long run.

My top 10 as of today:

Cooley
Jiricek
Slafkovsky
Lambert
Kemell
Savoie
Wright
Nemec
Miroshnichenko
Nazar

Savoie has fallen a lot for me. I haven't had many viewings in 2022, but he looked noticeably slower & less engaged than he did earlier in the season, which is a red flag for me.

Are you Czech/Slovak? :D Anyway, Wright is weird but he will be NO.1 for sure. And Cooley number 2. But that 3rd overall is definitely open, I can see multiple players to be drafted from that position. Right now, probably Slafkovsky

Its almost comical to see the players in the best junior league in the world (OHL) being ignored in rankings.

Last year after WJC-18 I posted my 2022 ranking and now update is coming...

Notes:

- in bar after the name is my player´s previous ranking from May 21
- in 2022 this draft started to look strong again!
- I like American´s crop although I don´t see surefire star now but so many 1st rounders here.. no doubt some of them will be a great players
- 30 Mar 2004 was a special day for 2022 draft it´s birthday party for Slafkovsky, Howard, McGroarty, Ty Nelson and Rieger Lorenz together ;)
- until 2022 draft I wasn´t fan of drafting Czech or Slovak players and now I have 3 of them in my top5 ? Crazy how can things turn around but these 3 are the real deals
- biggest improvement : there are more candidates for sure but I´ll select Logan Cooley
- biggest disappoitment : Brad Lambert. Although he could stille be a good player I don´t want him in my team anymore.
