Huge frame, fast, good but not great at everything. Seems like a good bet to become a top 4D, that's the sort of guy I take in the back half of the 1st round. But Pickering also gets a boost because it seems like he might develop into an absolute monster, could be really hard to play against in the NHL if he fills out the right way.

Pavel, I'm curious as to how the last ~6 months have impacted your rankings of these 3?

I feel like Wright shouldn't even be in the conversation.

I'm curious exactly how far do you think he has dropped and why do all of the major scouting services see it differently?

Hard to say. He could still go #1, but I wouldn't take him over Savoie, Cooley, or Lambert.

I don't care to speculate as to why others overrate him.

Maybe help us with our lists then. Where would you put these three Russian juniors: Ilya Kvochko, Viktor Neuchev, Raul Yakupov. I am guessing each is likely later-rounder, but I know zilch about them. Anything you like?
Kvochko is a smallish center. His attribute is skilled playmaking. Nearly everything will depend on whether he can translate his skilled game to next levels due to size. His numbers aren't impressive even in the MHL. If anything there is an outside chance he would ever make the NHL. I would not be surprised if he goes undrafted. Late round pick os okay for him.

Neuchev on the other hand is a bigger(tall, not much muscle so far) guy who is a goal scorer. He wasn't able to put a foot in the door in the VHL though. He looks really good in juniors, but still way behind the obvious guys for the 2022 draft. Probably worth a late round hit or miss pick.

Yakupov is a polarizing prospect. Close to cutoff date. So he will be among the youngest in the draft class. He only seems to score goals(4 assists all season is strange), he might improve mightily until draft day... or not(also due to his age). It is kinda too early to tell with him if he is for real. Just like Neuchev though he is behind the real russian assets for 2022. If he continues being among top MHL goal scorers he might be worth a late round pick.

The really interesting guys are Buchelnikov and Kantserov, but Kantserov is just 5 days beyond the cut off date, so he will be in the 2023 draft class. Both are right here right now better than all three players you named. Also Kantserov plays with Grebyonkin who is an another interesting dark horse candidate.

All three players you named I would not be surprised if a NHL team would not take them over some prospects they just know better and have a better idea what to expect.

If COVID does not strike again you'll know more about some of theose players after the U18 tournaments before the draft.

I could be wrong but I think I've seen Viktor Neuchev pop up in the second round on some draft rankings.

Just as I wrote, his size probably convinces some people to put him there. I personally think 2nd round is at this point too high. That's where I see guys like Perevalov(maybe a late 1st, early 2nd round pick) and Buchelnikov.

Top 5
1) Wright (at risk of falling)
2) Savoie (holding)
3) Jiricek (depending on injury recovery may challenge for top spot)
4) Cooley (fastest riser)

the hype will keep people at the top of the rankings, I still would take Wright at #1, but .. I am starting to really think about it.

  1. Wright
    • Very disappointing season, if there were a stronger #2 I'd bump him down
    • Still, his D-2 was awesome, and his D-1 was only the Hlinka, but that was very impressive
      • The draft season is the most important, but over-indexing on just the draft season can be a mistake - see "draft season fallers" like Barzal, Saad, Couturier, Fowler, Filip Forsberg, Kylington, etc.
    • Good tools, very good performance before this year, likely to be a top 6 C with 1C upside ... still #1 for me, though a weak one
  2. Jiricek
    • I'm maybe unreasonably high on him, but just love his game
    • Big, physical, very good skater for his size, dynamic with the puck, seems like he has franchise D upside, and is pretty low risk too (quite likely to be a top 4 D)
    • Sucks his season was cut short, but still love his game
