toronto blue jays prospect max pentecost is relishing his time back on the diamond.
The blue jays drafted the winder, ga., native in the first round of the 2014 mlb draft (11th overall) as a catcher, but injuries have seen pentecost shuffled to designated hitter duties and then first base as part of his buildup back to full health.
Catching is still his primary position, and the 24-year-old is getting more and more time behind the plate after missing the entire 2015 season due to shoulder surgeries.
“right now getting back into it, (i’m) getting more at-bats which is really nice, i’m able to get back into the game this year,†pentecost said during an appearance on the jeff blair show on sportsnet 590 the fan. “and i’m not fully dhing, i’m able to get out there on the field and kind of clear my mind away from the at-bats.
“it kind of makes the game get a little smoother.â€
pentecost prefers catching, though he doesn’t mind getting some reps at first base, something he thinks could help him reach the majors faster.
“it gives me a little more value possibly to a manager one day, where i have a secondary position and (am) not just a catcher,†he said. “so far it’s been really nie this year.â€
