When you look at the playoffs right now do you think the 5 teams remaining are there because they have game breakers or because they're deep?
Those are good points although I do think all the teams left in the playoffs are deeper than the Leafs. Back to my original question - If you keep the core what do you do with this current team to turn them into a stanley cup contender? And please don't say they are a cup contender right now. They haven't even won 16 playoff games in the Tavares era. When you look at.. every other cup winner in the past decade, are they there because they have game breakers? Everyone except Seattle right now has multiple expensive gamebreakers. Hell Florida is playing like 10 mil down on the cap ceiling and their depth seems fine.
Depth doesn’t increase the more you spend on it, most relevant depth pieces on this year’s or past finalists are below Kerfoot priced, often under 2 mil even. Your Paul, Perry, Goodrow, Hagel, etc types were all dirt cheap adds. We spent more on worse players, that’s the issue. Having more cap space available wouldn’t have made us pick Simmonds over Perry any less than we did.
Assuming nothing is done or very minimum moves and we just go with what we got then I'd assume this is the possible lineup.Genuine question for everyone in the "you need to win a Matthews/Marner/Nylander trade" crowd. What is the alternative? If you keep them what do you do with this current team to turn them into a stanley cup contender?
I am not saying that losing a trade brings you closer to a cup. My stance is that clearing cap space and gaining assets that outperform their cap hit will make the team better long term.
Konecny would get eaten alive in this market. He would be the worst player on the team defensively. His point totals are tantalizing but he's not the right player to bet on. If you're looking at PHI the ask should be Foerster, Cates, 7OA and swap Laughton for Cates if you want the local vet.If we trade Nylander or Marner we should
Target Konecny and Laughton
We already know this isn't a stanley cup contender so what is the goal with this roster?Assuming nothing is done or very minimum moves and we just go with what we got then I'd assume this is the possible lineup.
Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Robertson-Tavares-Marner
Holmberg-ROR-Jarnkrok
Abrusseze-Acciari/Kampf-Lafferty whoever cheaper between Kampf and Acciari
Rielly-Schenn
Brodie-Liljegren
McCabe-Timmins
Gio
Obviously we'll bring in FAs to compete for spots but this is just going off of possible re signing of current UFAs and what we got coming up from the Marlies.

Realistically does that trade exist? If it doesn't exist do you just run it back knowing it's not a winning formula?Decide what this teams identity is and find supporting pieces that maximize that identity. We’re physical but not intimidating, good defensively but not some shutdown juggernaut, good offensively but far from scoring at will, good on possession but don’t do much with it and lose the zone too much off unforced errors, half the lineup is fast and soft the other half is physical but slow, no one on the blueline is top-5 at any specific skill set other than maybe Schenn as a stay at home policeman.
To me, too much of the teams playstyle runs through Marner and if you’re going to make surgical impactful changes that’s where you look first. Swap him for a bigger meaner option or a faster one and replace vanilla players like Kerfoot and Brodie with middle class UFA/RFAs that fit whatever style of Marner replacement you target.
I'd need to do some serious research on who is the toxic in that locker room.I think if Marner is the guy to go, Winnipeg is a place with a lot of pieces I would be interested in.
I had no idea you cheered for this team my manI'd need to do some serious research on who is the toxic in that locker room.
I mean, it's good enough to get you into the playoffs. To do anything else who knows. I guess it depends on the coach/system maybe. I'd like to get Bertuzzi for that 2nd line and move Robertson to the 3rd. I don't even know what FAs I like this year tbh. Bertuzzi and Barbashev are the 2 at the top of my head I like and Drouin I wouldn't mind to give a chance to if he'd sign real cheap to try and earn a roster spot.Konecny would get eaten alive in this market. Would Miles wood be a cheaper and better option.
Players with NMC gets move all the time though. His NMC is where it comes from.
He won’t waive it. So he is impossible to trade.
Now you know my pain even moreI had no idea you cheered for this team my man
That's what you get for being a Cowboys and UT fan.Now you know my pain even more
Detroit would never do that. Even if Marner had a long term contract.Marner for Seider.
Does it happen often beyond the scenario in which the player moves from a non-contender to a contender? That obviously doesn't apply in this case.Guys with NMC get traded all the time.
Haven't we learned this yet? It happens every year.
Now I feel bad for making that joke that you were the world's biggest A&M fan lmao. I hadn't watched the NHL in years but watched the playoffs this year to see if anything was different. It unfortunately...met my expectations. I still hate the league so I use...other methods to watch...Now you know my pain even more
I'd rather retain on Marner than trade Nylander at this juncture, and I'd prefer to do neither.A lot of interest from Colorado for Nylander apparently. Byram is the target for me if Willy goes.
How much do you think Bertuzzi, ROR and one of Kampf/Acciari sign for?I mean, it's good enough to get you into the playoffs. To do anything else who knows.
