If Matthews decided he just didn't want to be here anymore, LA is a very interesting trade partner.

It really comes down to how you view Byfield. Is he trending toward bust / underwhelming top pick or is this a guy that just needs some time and it's more of a slowburn towards elite play.

Byfield, Clarke is a very good starting point for a trade if you believe Byfield will eventually figure it out.

I'm intrigued by Byfield, but at the moment it seems as if he has a much higher probability of topping out as a 2/3C than a true 1st line player.

If the Leafs go for a quantity package for Matthews he could be a big piece of it, but he'd need to come with a 1st and a top prospect on top of just him.

What if we did John Tavares for Erik Karlsson? EK is much better but he’s on a longer deal. No hockey benefit to SJ other than saving millions and getting out of contract jail earlier. Assuming JT player ball and understood the situation and was willing to leave.

I thought
Villardi. Iafallo. Clarke could work

I would be shocked if a Matthews or Marner trade is a 1 for 1 swap.

Whoever is coming back will always be compared directly to Matthews or Marner. Not fair to the player and puts an insane amount of pressure on them… and it appears pressure is already an issue.

It will have to be for a package of high end pieces.

I mean, save Chicago doing something outrageous with pick 1 of course.

I wonder if something around William Nylander for Brandt Clarke would work if LA was confident in re-signing Nylander.

McCabe - Clarke
Rielly - Liljegren
Brodie - Timmins
#7 Giordano

Matthews to LA for Clarke, Byfield, Kempe
Marner to Islanders for Pulock

Kempe is Nylanders best friend so let's see if that gives him a huge boost.

Lilly plus 2023 1st round pick for Helybuck

Kempe ROR Nylander
Knies Byfield Killorn
Wood Tavares Jarnkrok
Robertson Acciari Lafferty

McCabe Pulock
Brodie Clarke
Rielly Schenn
Gio

Helybuck (bad spelling)
Woll

If Matthews wants out.

La. Dallas. Vegas. Colorado. Carolina. Seattle. Could make sense.

I was also thinking maybe Nylander could go to Colorado and fill a wing role with Landeskog out all year. Not sure what they have to offer but would Bowen Byram be possible? Devon Toews?

Marner for something around Lindholm + Hanifin?

Both have only 1-year remaining so the Leafs would have to work out extensions for both but it also means their value isn’t as high. Marner has 2-years on his contract so they could trade him after the first year if he doesn’t re-sign.

Lindholm probably gets something around $7-8 mill over 8 years and he’d be a great 2C for the future.

Hanifin probably gets something around $ 5-6 mill over 8 years and Leafs would get another pick moving defenceman.

All the injuries/concussions with Byram scare me. Plus he’s a lefty. If we’re trading one of the core four mainly for a defenceman, I’d hope it would be for a righty.

If they trade Marner, I think Matthews is as good as gone.

Carolina keeps coming up as one of the top 6 or 7 teams that we could move Matthews to, and one of the top 2 or 3 teams that we could move Marner to.

Everybody needs to familiarize themselves with the following trade chips that will be discussed :

- SEBASTIAN AHO (LC)
- JESPERI KOTKANIEMI (LC)
- SETH JARVIS (RW)
- TEUVO TERAVAINEN (LW/RW)
- MARTIN NECAS (RW/RC)
- BRETT PESCE (RD)
- BRADY SKJEI (LD)
- PYOTR KOCHETKOV (GK)
- Alexander Nikishin (LD)
- Scott Morrow (RD)
- Jack Drury (LC)

Nikishin is their stud prospect that they don't want to trade away. Potential top pairing D signed in KHL until 2 summers from now. Morrow is a high end RD prospect.

mediocre is putting cherry on a shit sundae that is one of the worst 1/2C combos in hockey. Byfield is not going to breakout and he is not good that's why LAK fans are ready to move on from him.

If you're trading your 1C you need to get a 1C until you fill that hole your suggestions are meaningless and going to lead another decade of no playoffs

if you think Nylander is not consistent and says away etc how do you expect to get that return for him; you can't have it both ways either you think he's good and he gets that return or you think what you posted and he gets sold for pennies on the dollar

this team will finish last in the league enjoy lol
Because the numbers are there
His stats are good
He’s got skill but every playoffs he skates to avoid contact
Just doesn’t work

so what you're saying is we are smarter than GMs who undoubtedly see all this why would they want these players then on their team? should be nice getting peanuts for our "stars" because it seems like this entire fanbase thinks they're all scrubs.

Well they are signing these guys to huge contracts without any actual success or performance when it counts
Yeah when your job is in the line they do act different

Some teams don’t need nylander to be their number 1c they just need someone to increase goals to win games. At least in the regular season

I’ve seen susuzi get a huge contract for just having a break out playoffs in a covid season. Hasn’t done anything else in his career so yeah go figure these GMS

I don’t think anyone’s calling the Leafs stars scrubs. They are good, they’re just overpaid for what they bring and they want to be paid even more soon.

Some fans would rather cheer for players who fight tooth and nail to win a cup, not a contract negotiation.

Getting riled up because your star player(s) lacks certain qualities is a dead end. We've been through this before with Phil Kessel. Just because a player could change doesn't mean it's anything to expect. Phil Kessel didn't change in Pittsburgh in any way but it worked out for 2 Cups because that team had other key elements already in place. These 4 are all fine players and undoubtedly will go on to complement a different mix of teammates elsewhere (or even here) after this core is nuked.

Most of these are unappealing IMO. You also left out Svech, however unrealistic that may be.

I can't see Carolina letting go of Aho either, but I'd have most interest in him, Svech, Pesce and Jarvis.

I see nothing in zegras as a ayer that changes how this team would compete

Yuck
but Fantilli would be a nice addition to eventually replace Tavares as #2 C.

Zegras doesn't change the makeup but the cap savings from Marner would change a bunch of different things.

Oh i read that as a 2nd.. not the 2 overall

We aint getting that for marner

They arent trading two high end potential centers for a winger

I honestly don't care about what happens to them after they leave, they could win 10 cups but they aren't winning them here obviously

This team is broken, fixing it is my only priority and if that means Matthews and/or Marner has to go so be it
Yes we should keep your boy willy who disappeared for at least 25 games each year.
Willy will be 100 per cent the one to go.
He will hold out again and price himself out of the leafd
