Why would Matthews expect a contract of 14M+ ??

Because we've already given him 1 insane overpayment, why wouldn't he get another?

McDavid got 12.5M over 8 years and we gave an inferior player 11.5M over 5

Now add 5 years of inflation to that plus one hart, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted 15M+ quite honestly

I’d prefer last over the last 7 years. At least you get to draft high and you’re not stuck watching the same players let you down every year.
with what pick? plus we drafted high already and it didn't work

Kraken say hi.
they can say hi all they want; that team is going to finish behind Buffalo, Ottawa, Tampa, Florida in this division and maybe even Detroit

So what can we get for Marner in a deal.

I feel like the best options to move a Marner would be to a team that is rebuilding and has surplus futures and cap space to handle it and we can get some youth back and cap flexibility. Something like Anaheim for him to play with Zegras, or Columbus to feed Laine. Or do you see if we could get a couple of defensemen from Calgary or see if you can do a blockbuster with a disgruntled team like the Rangers?

The Rangers are interesting in a Matthews trade imo, Zibanejad + Goodrow + some combo of Miller, Laff, Kakko, Schneider, 1st.

Cap works, they’re looking at a shake up, they’re competitive in Matthews remaining prime, and they get half of team USA’s starting lineup.

He'll probably not even want to do eight years at 15 million he'll want to do like four years ugh.

He'd be smarter to take 8 years. He's not getting much of a raise at 30 and with his injury concerns, he is more likely to lose a lot more than that if things go wrong.

Got this offer on the trade board for Matthews from a Carolina fan :

LC - AUSTON MATTHEWS - 1 year @ $11.6403m

for

LC - JESPERI KOTKANIEMI - 7 years @ $4.82m
RD - BRETT PESCE - 1 year @ $4.025m
2023 CAROLINA 1ST ROUND PICK
2023 CAROLINA 5TH ROUND PICK
prospect RD - Aleksi Heimosalmi - 44th overall 2021 draft

Tried to push for Morrow or Nikishin instead of Heimosalmi and the two picks, but Carolina won't move all three of Kotkanimi Pesce Nikishin for 1 year of Matthews, and they can't move their best RHD prospect if they're also moving their best RHD that isn't close to retiring.

I think all things considered, this is a reasonable offer. Toronto, Dubas, and Leafs fans might want more, but we may or may not get a better offer than this for a non-extended Matthews. Hopefully something better than this comes out way. If we pulled the trigger on this, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world though, IMO.

Tavares first line center
Kotkaniemi second line center

Rielly - Pesce
McCabe - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
(#8 D UFA) - Timmins

(see above post)

Also saw a Canes fan discussing with Canes fans offer:

Necas - 1 year then RFA
Pesce - 1 year rental then UFA
2023 CAR 1ST
Vasily Ponomarev (2020 2nd rounder, center, #10 Canes prospect for The Hockey News).

Fan said something like "the Leafs will say no very quickly and then we move on"

Looks like an okay offer to me. I'm just trying to be realistic here. You don't get sky high returns on one year rentals. Maybe this is a good sign that we can actually get something decent for Matthews in the next 2 months.

Contracts aren't tied to inflation, they're tied to the cap. Imo he should be signed to the same cap percentage as his last deal, we paid him in advance to win trophies.

People in here are being dumb. I understand the frustration with this core. But we have two options when it comes to trading our best players. Either we get back a player of SIMILAR calibre or we trade a top player for scraps which will result in our team being worse and will inevitably lead to another rebuild. If you have a Matthew Tkachuck Huberdeau type trade thats one thing, but otherwise you re-sign Matthews, Willy and Marner. Im sorry but its just what we are stuck with.

One thing we need to try and do is get rid of JT. He is the main overpaid player on this team and aging, I think getting rid of his contract and using it to fill out some more depth could be VERY beneficial for this group. Going to be uncomfortable to get him to waive but Dubas has to do it.

This is very bad. Kotkaniemi should be a non-starter. He’s a cap dump at this point with 7 years remaining. If the Leafs are dealing Matthews for a cap dump, a pending UFA 3D, a late 1st and a C prospect that is legitimately the worst case scenario.

This is better but Necas shouldn’t be the target. He’s more of the same of what this team already has. Look at his point totals in the playoffs.

Jarvis and Morrow have to be the starting point for any Matthews deal.

The difference is he can go to UFA now and get an offer from every other team.

So what can we get for Marner in a deal.
Marner

For

(Ottawa)
Drake Batherson
Ridly Greig

Batherson and Greig are locked up for a while.

Batherson cap hit -> $4,975,000 until 2026-27
Greig cap hit -> $863,333 until 2024-25

Good value.

No, Batherson isn't Marner, but he's a big, phsyical player who is known to make simple and quick plays. Can handle the forcheck very well. Still young and hasn't hit his potential.

Greig.....I don't really know his upside, but I do know that he is a beast. He has the potential to become a true power forward. Absolutely annhilates people. Two players who, on the surface, appear to be made for playoff hockey.

Also, huge savings for the Leafs that can help re-sign key players and upgrade other areas.

Senators, in return, get the star they want to help promote their new team with a new arena and new ownership. Marner is also a regular season legend and can help them get into the post-season. Also, Ottawa doesn't lose any of their C's in this deal.

If there is a feel that Mathews won't resign, would anyone consider moving him to Anaheim (not LA but still California) for the 2nd over-all pick in Fantilli as a base? Step back. But huge upside player. Cheap contract for a few years. Local kid.

Use the savings, try to sign Bertuzzi and someone else. So it is essentially Mathews for a future stud and some good core guys now.

I don't hate the deal but there's speculation that Batherson was part of the 2018 team Canada scandal and the Leafs wouldn't want to get stuck with the player if/when the names get released.

Almost forgot about that! I'm assuming that, since they gave him such a long contract, they have some evidence that he's not guilty. Formenton on the other hand.........

Yesterday my 3 trades were:

Nylander for Garland, Myers(cap dump), 11OA
Matthews @50% for Iafallo, Byfield, Clarke, Walker (cap dump)
Marner for Jarvis, Morrow, 23 1st

Today there has been some traction on the main boards regarding Matthews/Marner and it appears DAL/NJ could be fits. My proposals:

Matthews @50%, Robertson to DAL for Johnston, Stankoven, Marchment

Marchment is included to balance cap. Still a serviceable player. Serves as a power forward for a team that could use one. Johnston scored 24 goals as a 19 year old. Local kid with tons of talent. Potential 1C of the future, not the same level of 1C as Matthews. Stankoven is the back to back CHL player of the year. His size makes him a bit of a risk but he has a relentless motor. He has played three seasons with Minten. They can transition to the Marlies together. Dallas can fit Matthews @50% under the cap.

Marner to NJ for Mercer, Bastian

Mercer makes up the second half of the Leafs future 1/2C punch with Johnston. He just finished his 2nd season with 27 goals/56 points. Fast player with a good scoring touch so far. Again, like Johnston, will never be Marner but will be a good player for the Leafs for significantly cheaper through his prime years. Bastian isn't a necessary piece but I love the player. Solid 3/4 RW that has played up the lineup at times in NJ. Potential staple of the Leafs bottom 6 for the next 5 years. NJ can fit this trade under the cap.

They gave him the contract before the story broke. They signed him in September 2021.

Best of luck with that

None of our boys are doing us any favors, they like being paid and they don't take discounts
