Capfriendly has us with 162k in cap room right now with ROR activated and Simmonds and Abruzzese sent down. Will need to make another roster move to add Knies to the lineup in a couple of days. Murray to LTIR?

Or Murray comes back and Woll goes back to the Marlies.

Hypothetical if we get kicked out first round again.

Nylander is great and will get a huge raise this year but I think we need to try and get an elite goalie to stand on his head and save our asses.

So Nylander plus SDA for Helly and Lowry from the Jets

Rielly traded for some draft picks or prospects, opening up cap space and just signing Gustafsson as the PP 1 guy.

Jarnkrok Matthews Marner
Knies ROR Tavares
McMann Lowry Okposo
Lucic Acciari Lafferty

McCabe Brodie
Giordano Lilly
Gustafsson Schenn
FA

Helly
Woll

If we lose in the 1st round, I doubt we run it back with a roster that close to this years.

I think *IF* they go out in the 1st round, it's going to start a series of events which is gonna result in a big overhaul / re-tool / rebuild, it's gonna be 2-6 years depending on if you can get McDavid here.

Failing that, you're hoping to find a centre to build around in the draft again.

Lafferty and Acciari looked like nothing players out there yesterday.
After watching Hyman look less like himself in the playoffs every year in Toronto I have a theory that players like Hyman and Acciari/Lafferty stand out in the regular season because they give 100% every night. In the playoffs when players give 100% more consistently, players like Hyman/Acciari/Lafferty don't stick out as much.

It's a good theory, imo. Kampf is another guy who kind of just becomes another "guy" out there. Team is pretty loaded with them tbh. Brodie seems to shrink a bit in the playoffs I've noticed.

ROR was one of the few that looked better last night than he normally does. McCabe too.

Whatever this team decides to do, it really needs to focus on the blueline.

Everyone was talking about our depth on the backend, sure having a bunch of third pairing defencemen is great incase injuries but if you take a look at basically every other top team in the league, their blueline is better than ours.

Heading into next season there’s only 4 defencemen I’d keep, well 5 but Gio would be my 7th.

_______ - _______
McCabe - Liljegren
Brodie - Timmins
#7 - Giordano

I’ve defended Rielly as much as I could but if we do get knocked out in the first round I expect some serious changes and him being traded is one of them.

Rielly does not provide 7.5M in value to this team.

That being said, McCabe can probably be the LD partner for a good RD you bring in. The problem is RD are unicorns.

Let Gio play.

McCabe-X
Brodie-Liljegren
Gio-Timmins
Schenn

If the Leafs lose in the 1st round RD should be the big target in a Matthews and/or Nylander trade.

Get Clarke for the future and Roy for the present from LAK in a Matthews trade (I have proposed Byfield, Iafallo, Clarke, Roy for Matthews).

Get Schneider in the NYR trade for Nylander.

I don’t know, Gio looked great when Rielly went down in the first half of the season but since the second half and now game one of the playoffs his game seems to really have fallen off.

He’s definitely not our biggest issue back there, but I see Timmins and Gio rotating in and out of the lineup next season.

Okay so it's waaaaay too early to make snap judgements based on this series....but like just for reference, what's the cap floor next season?

Mcdavid signed by toronto to 15-20M at age 30 with expectations to be the best player on the league will age poorly like Jagr to the Caps poorly

We would be paying for Mcdavid expecting absolute dominance and 150 pt version of him when he will be settling to an all world but not clear cut best player (likely is Bedard by then)

If we rebuild don't sign 97 in 3 years. Rebuild properly this time even if it takes a few years longer

They'll probably re-sign Matthews and Nylander and just wait until JT's contract expires to really re-shape the team.

Shoot Tavares into the sun.

Trade Marner.

Re-sign Matthews and Nylander.

Play them together.

Build a proper support cast.

Get rid of Kerplunk and Holl.

Take the goaltending position seriously.

Completely revamp the D

Fire Doobie and Keefer.

Matthews and nylander probably won't want to sign if they lose this year

They'll be hated on hard through the summer (justifiably so depending on their perf the rest of the series)

If either have any aspirations of being remembered well when they retire across the league they will look to leave the leafs when they get the chance.

They need to be motivated to win this year or they won't be motivated at all and just continue to collect their money
