JFC, hard to believe people are still bitching about McCann. We got him for very little and it was a small part of the big picture (expansion draft) in which we lost less than almost every other team in the league. A feather in the Dubas cap IMO.

Carry on.

Marchment too. Imagine if we had Marchment AND McCann, we'd be unstoppable for years to come.:laugh:

Would you trade Matthew for Bedbard or Fantilli?

Imagine if we know that McDavid will sign with the Leafs in 3 years. Would trade Matthews for low cap hit players

I’m def open to trading matthews now
Huge contract and I hardly notice him this year
What a difference from a year incredible

This organization chose not to trade JVR, Bozak, Gardiner, Andersen, Rielly, Kerfoot etc a year before their deals expired and now they're going to trade Matthews? They'll offer Matthews the world to re-sign and pray to god he stays.

But why?
Can’t argue with Marchand dig about spending cap on only 3 players…that haven’t won anything when it counts

A team in position to draft Bedard or Fantilli probably won't have much use for Matthews at this point in time. There's also quite a bit of risk attached to an unproven player - this applies to a greater extent for Fantilli - for a team trying to contend. Already knowing that McDavid will sign here so far away from now can also either be considered a big stretch or a major case of tampering.

31 other teams will give Matthews the raise if we don't (we will), has nothing to do with justification.
That’s what I’m saying also
If this is his new play
Then I can’t believe I’m saying this but he is welcome to leave
Tieing him up big to further handcuf our team for how he’s played all season this year is not acceptable

It's the NHL, these GMs are paid millions to handcuff rosters with massive contracts. Acceptable or not. We literally just did this with Rielly.

Yes very true
Chychrun looking pretty good right now
I get what ur saying
I guess my vote to extend dubas is now changing if it means matthews continues like this and he wants to extend him to a bigger contract

Just tired of losing with no end in sight
As I expect all on here also are!
To be part of leafsnation :(

the leafs are ready to give Matthews a blank cheque for him to sign. If he doesn’t sign an extension by season opener next year then that can’t be a good sign.

I wish .but make no mistake.this trade deadline has Shanahan Spezza and Haley wickenheiser written all over it
Hence the 2024 first that didn't get moved the leafs may beat Tampa but injuries or not I think dubas is 50/50 at best to return
He didn't dump Keefe and after the years of not producing a series win it really will be his downfall u

I think he always planned to leave after 5 years
He thought maybe they'd have a cup by now

When you boil it down - all of the "salary cap" issues that teams face are due to incompetent GMs. If GMs just handed out less contracts that looked bad the minute they were signed you'd have more money in circulation.

If the Leafs know Matthews won't re-sign for anything reasonable this would probably be a perfect scenario. I just don't see any team that is in the Bedard/Fantilli range that would need/want Matthews over those 2. All of the teams at the bottom aren't really close to competing and I can only see a team acquiring Matthews if they know he will re-sign there which in theory would be LA, NYR, maybe ARI.

Looking at LAK it'd probably be a package around Clarke, Byfield with Roy, Arvidsson or Iafallo thrown in to balance cap. I wouldn't want any of their future 1sts because they would be primed to go on a few runs with Matthews.

If Matthews gives any indication he's not willing to resign long term then you ship him to Arizona.

To Toronto-
Crouse
Cooley
Guenther
2023 1st Round Pick
2024 1st Round Pick

To Arizona-
Matthews

No team will offer up a package like that unless it comes with an extension.

People always put this notion forward that if Toronto doesn't do X, Y, Z, and aren't good enough for Matthews, he'll leave and get that home run contract somewhere else. True to an extent and it's clear the Leafs are trying by putting together this beefed up team for the playoffs, but I always thought it would be a two way street.

If Matthews doesn't do any big game, deep playoff run stuff in the 1.5 years remaining, or if his game slips the way it has from his peak last season, or if injuries start piling up, is he still going to be a $15 million man? Is a well run team going to rip itself apart to fit him in? He's getting outgunned by Marner and Nylander on his own team. He's 25th in PPG average.

Interesting that Friedman reported the Leafs were interested in Erik Karlsson at the deadline.

Would ever a Morgan Rielly for Erik Karlsson (with some retention) ever make sense, factoring in contracts, age, ability?

With significant salary retention maybe, but I think trading Rielly would have been a significant blow to the room.

They can't let it wait that long. His NMC kicks in July 1 2023. Can't let him hold all the cards.

What’s in it for Rielly?
