The year they protected Holl, they literally had no one else to play RD other than Brodie. Liljegren was still a project playing in the AHL. A right handed top 4 RD was an absolute unicorn in the NHL back then, the Leafs were trying to find good ones for YEARS and failed with the likes of Zaitsev and Barrie. A top 4 D is and always will be worth more than a top 6 forward.

McCann was a similar player to Kerfoot at the time. Leafs fans need to let it go. The same people lamenting for McCann are going to cry just as hard when Holl and Kerfoot are succeeding on the shitty teams that sign them for more than they are making now and put them in bigger roles.
I will pay you any amount of money you wish should Holl and/or Kerfoot succeed on any other team.

At that point, you could have considered keeping McCann and then trading Kerfoot for a player that is similar to Holl.

I believe that the Leafs management team are good at finding talent to play in the system. For example, iI think they will put Timmins on that same path as they did with Holl.

I'd disagree that McCann was a similar player. Maybe similar in the sense of supporting player, but I'd say that McCann is probably a more pure goal scorer.

Holl was never a top 4 D-man a day in his life, all canadian division didn't change that. Keefe/Dubas just really, really overvalue Holl and Kerfoot. It is what it is. And for the record, I don't think Justin Holl is as bad of a player as people say. But when you get the calculator out and start adding up some of these salaries in comparison to placement on the roster, the production doesn't add up, Kerfoot included.

Dubas would've had all summer to figure that out, I think he could manage.
so on the current lineup like the poster you quoted stated it wouldn't work.

So we have given up McCann and now a 4th round pick in 2025 in order to continue to pay Kerfoot $3.5 million to do whatever it is that he does, only to watch him walk away for nothing as a UFA this summer?

Excellent!
The McCann situation was a huge fumble considering they gave up nothing for him.

Absolutely brutal decision to protect Holl instead of 7 forwards

How does McCann and his salary fit into the Leafs?

Oh I'm sure an AHL D or a couple league minimum D with McCann would have made the Leafs so much better. Context.

People look at one season of stats and their brains go dead and they start drooling instead of thinking logically.

I was excited about McCann when they first traded for him but understood the logic at the time in keeping Holl. Kerfoot also came off a solid playoff showing as well.

In hindsight it looks poor but there were questions about McCann sustaining his higher than average shooting percentage. He has managed that and is somehow shooting a crazy 22% this season.

But let's not overlook the prime opportunities McCann gets on Seattle which he wouldn't on the Leafs.

Do you believe he would have gotten 2nd line LW last season? Kerfoot spent a lot of time there.

I don't think we could have kept him beyond on an extension or maybe we could have if Kerfoot/Holl aren't around.

I think he would have bounced around the top 9 like Kerfoot .. but he also gets top PP use, he wouldn't get that here

Yeah, PP2 for him although he likely would have been one of the primary trigger guys there.

We have hindsight now, it was a bad decision and I have been really hard on Dubas to this point but think he's pretty much done what he can for this team.

The "big 4 (or 5)" need to get it done this post-season, just don't wanna see Holl in the line up.

This should get it done, the big guys gotta light up the opposition like other superstars.

Considering they gave up nothing for him, that would make it less of a fumble. You know, since he was worth nothing to 29 other teams?

I mean if getting top tier offensive usage on a bad team doesn’t matter to you then you should be thrilled we got a 60 point D-man + 1st for Sandin right?

Well said....
Gus is at bad at D and he hasn't shown that he can consistently produce offense either, and is also 30 years old. McCann has at least shown he's a good finisher over the last few years, and he's young enough that he's just entering his prime and could grow with the roster we have here. Scored at a 30 goal pace last year, and is scoring at 40+ goal pace this year. But it's okay, it was totally worth it for the extra couple of years for a forward who has no defined role on the team and another guy who is basically the #6D now.

They aren't even playing remotely the same roles either.

McCann is used for pure offense and PP with a ridiculously above-average shooting percentage this year. There is also the thing that out of the 30 goals he has scored this year, only 10 have come against teams currently in a playoff position.

Kerfoot has mostly been used for pure defense and PK with a ridiculously below-average shooting percentage this year.

People have made up their minds about both already so it doesn't really matter what they do now, short of completely dominating.
